aclaire11 Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 (edited) One of my male friends recently converted, and he is planning on serving a mission. The thing is, he has Tourette's Syndrome, and we aren't sure if that will disqualify him. He doesn't have severe symptoms: he has occasional facial twitches and just sort of doesn't know when to be quiet. (Giving people way too much information, etc) Do any of you know if he would be able to serve? Thanks Edited February 19, 2009 by aclaire11 Quote

I have heard that the gymnast Mary Lou Retton had a form of Tourette's Syndrome. If so........look what she was able to accomplish with it!:) Quote
Dr T Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 I'm not LDS and can't make that decision but I'd bet it could be ok and depends on the severity of the d/o for him. Stress usually makes Tourettes worse so there's that. Quote
Gwen Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 i don't see why he would be prevented from serving. the only time i can think of that ym can't go, other than worthiness, is if they can not function without assistance (bathing, bathroom, dressing, etc) i could see them limiting where he could go due to it. for example if his ticks are really bad going to a country with a very quiet culture where it would be misunderstood could be a problem. or if his ticks involve cursing that could prove to be a problem in some areas. most areas i don't think there would be a huge problem and no need to limit anything.
