I think it is entirely possible that Russia could break into smaller units and I would welcome the idea. Perhaps a new union of sorts or even a confederacy could be established. Whatever the outcome, I hope the best for the people there.

“The whole world is very fragile. The question is where would you rather be: In Moscow or London? I’d much rather be in Moscow.”

Same here. I think Russia will pull things out before other parts of Europe. I listened to a speech by the Russian President on the economy the other day. Very good and i think they will pull out. I thought his speech was better and more honest than Obama's. Starting to get bad when you trust the Russians more than our leaders.

A bunch of bean counters predicting Russia's future? Isn't that kind of silly?

Russia doesn't break up. It occasionally experiences a violent bloodbath and re-shapes it's government, but it doesn't break up.

I think if Russia ever follows through with the democratic reforms Medvedev wants to do, there will be some ethnic group who feels left behind by the post-Soviet independence rush that will gather the courage to ask Russia for independence. Whether or not Russia allows this will mostly depend, I think, if it's in Russia's best economic interests.

Last year, I remember running into sources from overseas predicting the immediate and impending breakup of the United States. I felt it was pretty naive of them to believe that the United States was going to just fall apart in the very near future.

Similarly, I would seriously doubt that Russia is on the verge of falling apart. I guess I'd have to see more information to be convinced of the certain doom of their nation.

Russia is the product of imperialist conquest by the Tsars spanning several centuries. There certainly is a legacy of being a part of Russia by force and not by choice, but after several centuries of unity, I think most of Russia has developed a very strong sense of national identity. Russia has weathered tough times before and they will weather them now.
