A thanks to all who are giving contributions to this thread.

I am finding there are so many gifts covered under the spiritual gift of wisdom that it doesn't do it justice to just call it the gift of wisdom. I think I am going to make a sub category under the gift of wisdom and list more spiritual gifts under this. I will do some tweaking with the list in the future and post it again for all to see.

Gift of judgment

Moses 1:15

Blessed be the name of my God, for his Spirit hath not altogether withdrawn from me, or else where is thy glory, for it is darkness unto me? And I can judge between thee and God; for God said unto me: Worship God, for him only shalt thou serve.

Still: I have always liked this list. I might have one for you. The gift of piety. I think it is a spiritual gift. I don't have it and the many who think they do confuse it with the curse of self-righteousness.

Some scripture refs:

List number:

16- Moroni 10:14 And again, to another, the beholding of angels and ministering spirits

8- Moroni 10:9 For behold, to one is given by the Spirit of God, that he may teach the word of wisdom;

12 - Moroni 10:13 And again, to another, that he may prophesy concerning all things;

16- Moroni 10:14 And again, to another, the beholding of angels and ministering spirits

21 - Moroni 2:3 Now Christ spake these words unto them at the time of his first appearing; and the multitude heard it not, but the disciples heard it; and on as many as they laid their hands, fell the Holy Ghost.

7 - Moses 1:27 And it came to pass, as the voice was still speaking, Moses cast his eyes and beheld the earth, yea, even all of it; and there was not a particle of it which he did not behold, discerning it by the spirit of God.

Martybess, I think you meant "posterity", not prosperity. Children are a gift from God. They are not a spiritual gift in my eyes (at least how Moroni describes spiritual gifts in Moroni chapter 10). However to be a good parent one needs to seek after the gift of wisdom in order to instruct your children properly in the way of the Lord.

The gift of judgment would come under the gift of discernment. There many qualities of judgment and discernment that are intertwined.

The gift of piety would come under the the gift of seeking that which is righteous (which is also part of the gift of wisdom).

Thanks for the scripture references on spiritual gifts Martybess. I will have to include them with the list of spiritual gifts.

Sorry for the late response - I just found this thread. Here is what Elder Bruce R. McConkie said about gifts of the Spirit:

"Spiritual gifts are endless in number and infinite in variety” (A New Witness for the Articles of Faith [1985], 371).

This was quoted in an Ensign article by Elder Robert D. Hales: "Gifts of the Spirit," Feb 2002, 12. It appears that trying to make a list of spiritual gifts may be an exercise in futility.

That was my thought --- that Gifts of the Spirit are endless.

On this note, I have one that I sought after because I thought it was listed in the BoM, and found out later I had the meaning wrong. But I received the Gift anyway within two weeks of asking for it!!

I call it "The Gift of Administration" -- which referred to a gift of leadership/management ability. It's described as the gift of knowing the "Differences of Administration" in the BoM, which others told me later means the ability to discern when a leadership path is consistent with gospel principles, or when a resurrected messenger is truly from heaven or an imitation.

I thought it meant the gift of being an effective leader. So, I prayed and fasted for it, and then two weeks later was called into the Bishopric of a very high-functioning Ward where the Ward council was full of ex-Bishops, Ex-Stake Presidency members, and really gifted businessmen and professionals. I thought that was the way of the Lord imparting the knowledge I needed - me, this lowly, inexperienced university teacher.

So, I believe that Gift exists -- the Gift of Administration as I originally defined it in my prayers.

You have a different view than I do. I believe the gift of administration has to do with service and not leadership. Therefore someone with the gift of administration would be just as happy to serve (adminsiter) as an assistant nursery leader as an area president.

Perhaps -- but the administer is normally used to describe leadership or management -- for example "Master of Business Administration". Further, the Gifts of the Spirit are diverse and probably near infinite -- so, to infer that my experience above narrows the definition to mean only leadership, or that the person seeking that Gift somehow thinks less of calling that involve teaching or simply doing a job is reading way more into my comment than is actually there.

The following is a good list by Elder Ashton.

Let us review some of these less-conspicuous gifts:

the gift of asking;

the gift of listening;

the gift of hearing and using a still, small voice;

the gift of being able to weep;

the gift of avoiding contention;

the gift of being agreeable;

the gift of avoiding vain repetition;

the gift of seeking that which is righteous;

the gift of not passing judgment;

the gift of looking to God for guidance;

the gift of being a disciple;

the gift of caring for others;

the gift of being able to ponder;

the gift of offering prayer;

the gift of bearing a mighty testimony;

and the gift of receiving the Holy Ghost”

(in Conference Report, Oct. 1987, 23; or Ensign, Nov. 1987, 20 ).

I may be wrong but I think there is a difference between "gifts of the spirit" and talents which are sometimes referred to as "gifts". Elder Ashton starts that talk saying, "One of the great tragedies of life, it seems to me, is when a person classifies himself as someone who has no talents or gifts." Some of those things listed above may come from "gifts of the flesh" as opposed to "gifts of the spirit".

We are dual beings in this life and some "talents" are part of our physical being and some "talents" and abilities are from our spiritual being. For example, just because Moses may have had a hard time speaking in front of groups may have been a physical impairment, may have had stage freight or something because his sympathetic nervous system put out too much adrenaline when he was in front of groups, I don't know. But that may not be his part of his underlying spiritual personality or ability.

Ones ability to ponder, listen, ask and even avoid contention are sometimes affected by their physical wiring of their brain and not purely a spiritual factor as would be true "gifts of the spirit". If one has ADHD it is physically hard for that person to listen and stay on the same topic very long, making it difficult to ponder. So the opposite of that could be that one has an easier time pondering because the wiring of their brain allows them to do that with more ease and then that would still be a gift but a "gift of the flesh".

I would think that "gifts of the spirit" by its implied definition are related to skills, traits and abilities that are almost purely controlled by the spirit and not altered or mostly controlled by the body. For example, a "gift of the spirit" would never be something like one's ability to play basketball.

Like I said above, I may be wrong ... these are just some thoughts.
