Amillia Posted February 17, 2005 Author Report Posted February 17, 2005 Yeah I know what you mean. I didn't get either one right, I had to ask. Quote
Jenda Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 The answer to the first one would be to ask one of the men what the other man would say if he is asked which door he is standing in front of. Quote
pushka Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 Can't quite get my head round that answer Jenda...although you're probably correct...could you unravel it for me please? Quote

You kind of have to draw a diagram to get the answer right. So, let me try. <span style=\'color:red\'>HELLOK, that is my diagram. Heaven is above the top line, hell is below the bottom line. The parentheses represent the door and the @ represents the man in front of each door. (Pretend the man is below the top line (I couldn't get the @ in the right place with it below the line.))Anyway, one of the men always tells the truth, and one always lies. You pick a man (say, the one in front of Hell for the purpose of the riddle (it could be either one.)(And when you pick, you really don't know, I just needed to know for the purpose of figuring out the riddle.))You ask the man, "What will the man standing in front of the other door say if I ask him where that door leads?"If the man you ask is telling the truth, he will say "Hell" (because that means the other guy is the liar.)If the man you ask is lying, he will say "Hell" because he is the liar and he is guarding hell. DisRuptive1 Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 How do you know which door leads to hell though? This will only work if you know which door leads where. I didn't see anything in the riddle that said we knew where each door led, just that each door led to one of those 2 places. Quote
pushka Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 Thanks DisRuptive1...that was my problem with solving the stuff that Jenda said too...I remember a similar problem being addressed in Dr. Who once, about who was the real Doctor and who wasn't...they used the same solution as Jenda I think, but still as you say...how do you know which one you're asking in the first place!!!!! You don't need to know which door is which. No matter who you ask, the answer to the question will be the door they are guarding, as long as you ask that particular question. Quote
Amillia Posted February 18, 2005 Author Report Posted February 18, 2005 The answer is: Ask a question you know the answer to. Then if the guy lies, you know it. If he tells the truth, you know it. Sample question: How much is 2+2? Or what is my name? Stuff like that. If one has to lie and the other has to tell the truth, you will know right a way which is which. :) Quote
Outshined Posted February 18, 2005 Report Posted February 18, 2005 Didn't you guys ever watch the movie Labyrinth? That was one of the riddles the girl faced in search of her brother. Great movie, by the way... Quote
DisRuptive1 Posted February 19, 2005 Report Posted February 19, 2005 I STILL don't get it. You only get to ask one question. Yet how do you know if the guy who is lieing is standing in front of Heaven while the guy telling the truth is standing in front of Hell? Quote
Outshined Posted February 19, 2005 Report Posted February 19, 2005 Ask one "would the other man say this is the door to Heaven?" Lets say he says yes. If he's the liar, he's lying about what the other guy would say, and it is not the right door. If he's the truthful one, he'd be telling you that the liar would say yes, meaning it is not the right door. So the other door is the right one. Watch "Labyrinth". It contains a good clear example of the problem. Quote
Jenda Posted February 19, 2005 Report Posted February 19, 2005 If your only objective is to find out which guy is lying and which is telling the truth, you can do what Amillia has posted. But if you want to know which guy is guarding which door, you would do what I posted. The answer in either case is the door that person is guarding. Draw a picture and figure it out for yourself. It is the only question that works. Quote

It is the only question that works. I understood your answer Jenda.....it was a great answer....and logically it would work.... Unless the man who said he lies all the time actually lied when he said that......And "Labyrinth" IS a great movie.....a classic in our family like "Princess Bride". Quote
Amillia Posted February 19, 2005 Author Report Posted February 19, 2005 If the guy tells the truth or the correct answer then you know he is guarding the door to heaven~ If the guy tells a lie or the wrong answer then you know he is guarding the door to hell and you don't want that door, you want the other one! The TRUTH teller will ALSO point at the door to hell (because he knows the liar will lie and point at the door the truth teller would NOT choose) So BOTH will be pointing at the door to hell.....GO THROUGH THE DOOR THAT NONE ARE POINTING AT>it leads to heaven Quote

pushka Posted February 20, 2005 Report Posted February 20, 2005 Thank you for settling that little puzzle Setheus...I do believe it was the same question that was asked in that Dr.Who episode I saw many, many years ago!! (my ex husband was a mad D.Who fan so I've seen a whole lot of them!!!) Quote
Jenda Posted February 20, 2005 Report Posted February 20, 2005 Pushka, I love Dr. Who. Ask your hubby which show that was. I do not remember that being part of one of the shows. Thanks. Quote
