Traveler Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 1. By definition a Seer has access to a seer stone.2. The use of a seer stone is by commandment through covenant.3. A Revelator gives revelations needed for establishing, renewing and advancing covenants.4. The Declaration on the family was a revelation.5. Conference talks often contain revelations (especially talks by apostles).6. According to covenant – revelation is given line upon line upon line, precept upon precept upon precept and if we understand Isaiah correctly we must be loyal to our covenants (both as individuals and as a covenant people) to proceed with the “line upon line and precept upon precept”.7. A prophet is someone ordained to testify of Christ – and by this definition missionaries are prophets – so are Apostles, 70’s and others that are ordained and set apart (perhaps even at the ward level). As we have learned; not all that are ordained and set apart fulfill their calling. We also have witness in scripture of prophets that were not loyal to their calling. 8. The calling of “prophet”, “revelator” and “seer” are all according to covenant. Part of this covenant is the “Oath and Covenant” of the priesthood. (See D&C 84) Therefore without the priesthood there can be no covenants that include prophets, seers and revelators. In all my personal seeking - the LDS covenant is one of the very few that even claim divine apointment and include the ancient order of prophets, revelators and seers as existed when the scriptures were given according to covenant through prophets, seers and revelators. The Traveler Quote
Just_A_Guy Posted July 7, 2009 Report Posted July 7, 2009 It is not secret...never assumed if you do not know, know one else can know it. There is one seer stone Joseph used after acknowledging the difficulty of using the U&T and two that was given by Brigham Young family after his death. I do not recall any other seer stone that was stated in his journal or those who did the research about this single seer stone. One of the best researched article is in a previous post, which talked about this same topic.I just scanned the thread and I don't see a link from you. Can you re-post? Thanks. Quote
Snow Posted July 8, 2009 Report Posted July 8, 2009 What is the last prophecy received from a modern day prophet? (Is it the 1978 revelation on blacks and the priesthood?)At minimum, last general conference;prophecy, n:An inspired utterance of a prophet, viewed as a revelation of divine will.3. If the prophets are sustained as seers, why do they not use their ability to translate valuable documents such as the dead sea scrolls, the Book of Joseph from papyri, or finish the inspired translation of the Bible? The church is even known to possess Joseph's seer stone and Urim and Thummim.seer n: one who sees, a prophet.1. What makes you think that a prophet/seer should automatically be a translator?2. Your question/argument presupposes that God wants to inspire his prophets to translate such document. What evidence (none) do you have that God wants that? Quote
Hemidakota Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 (edited) I just scanned the thread and I don't see a link from you. Can you re-post? Thanks.Oh man....this is a continuous gestation of a repeatable topic in seeking the same links. Sorry!A good start in understanding on how, who, when, and what was used is the PDF article you can find online - Joseph Smith: "The Gift of Seeing" by Richard Van Wagoner and Steve Walker. sixpacktr Posted July 10, 2009 Report Posted July 10, 2009 Interesting question. However, it has been stated by prophets in the past, during talks in GC, that the church gets daily revelations. I don't think that means that every one of them is earthshattering or show a change in course. I would rank the revelation to build lots of smaller temples as a sign of a seer. Look at how that has blessed the church. It is also a sign of seership or revelation when GAs go out and form new stakes/new stake presidencies. Also, I believe that we have enough for us now. Someone stated that we don't live what we already have, which I agree with--to be given more would actually damn us if we didn't live that as well. However, if you listen to conference carefully and to what is being said, there are warnings that are in there (he that hath ears to hear...) of soon to come events. Again, much as the Savior did, I believe that at times the GAs are very blunt and too the point, and at other times teach in 'parables' so that those that are spiritually ready get it and those that aren't aren't won't be held accountable for it. But, help me out here--I don't see how that article can be used to support the assertion that the LDS Church still has THE Urim and Thummim that Joseph Smith received with the plates--the one that was attached to the breastplate, set in rims, and all that . . . What is stated in the article and is correct, the Seer stones are sitting in the archives. Quote
Just_A_Guy Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 Oh, OK. Must've misinterpreted you earlier. Quote
Hemidakota Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 I personally believe the seer stones are left for a purpose. The rest of the items, will be given back to the next seer who will complete the final translation of the sealed portion of the plates. Quote
