Indeed it's a pretty scary world. And as for giving out info, the worst place can be in a chat room. You really do have to be honestly careful--one thing that I've learned is listening to the Spirit about a person. A lot of good can come from a lot of bad and a lot of people easily say they are one thing when they are another, just like I could say I'm a blue feathered monkey, though no one would believe me.

As for online gaming--that has too much gunk, swearing and stuff. I know there's moderators but still...

I've met quite a few people off the net...all of the LDS, lol. But I've always gone in numbers. ^.^

You know, I just talked to a friend from church. She originally met her husband here. They met here and briefly chatted before they started talking other places. They have been sealed and are very happy! So there is something good! B)

Very good advice...especially for the youth on this board...too many nuts allowed to run amoke who seem to be decent people.

the OLD LDSchat is where my wife and I met!!!

It is more than men simply hitting on women, sadly. I am friends with a local police officer in an Internet task force. He pretends to be a teenage boy or girl on the web and he has stories that will alarm any parent. I do free seminars in my area to parents about Internet safety. Letting your kids on the Internet unattended is as safe as letting them play stick ball on the freeway during rush hour.

I know (by doing it myself) that once someone knows my name, they can find out my parents, my address, phone, school info, account infos, and so on. It's all here on the net. Scary, huh?

Sad thing is, for all my accounts I have the same password. The only defense is that each one is slightly different (like adding a number at the end, spelling it a different way) and even that isn't very good.

And don't ever mail anybody anything.

I like passphrases. Many programs and forums and blogs now allow you to enter in passphrases. So instead of coalminer9 or c0aLMin3r9 I can now do ninecoalminersdrankslurpees. The longer the phrase, the stranger the sentence, the better you are.
