lizzy12 Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 Since, the original statement came out The Line of appropriateness and morality and what was acceptable has been moved. A lot. We talked about this in YW a lot because my YW prez. says " If it's not appropriate for my daughter, Emily, Its not appropriate for me." We are taught to become like Little Children and this goes along with it. Some movies like Twilight which is rated pg-13 for violence but which is absolutely appropriate for her and perhaps her 10 year old ... she might watch but with caution. Before hand she checks it out online. I respect this about her- I wish I could have that same practice and I am trying to develop it.Websites that are great !Kids-In-Mind: Movie Ratings That Actually WorkReviews & Ratings for Family Movies, TV Shows, Websites, Video Games, Books and Music Quote
CrimsonKairos Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 (edited) If it's not appropriate for my daughter, Emily, Its not appropriate for me.That is admirable that your leader sets such a strong example. More power to her. Also, someone who is 12 may very well be able to handle mature subject matter (war for example, not pornography) that an adult can't handle at 34. Everyone is different.Remember how Ammaron told Mormon at the age of 10 that Mormon was a "sober child" and "quick to observe" yet there were probably many, many Nephite adults at that same time who were not able to bear what Mormon could bear.In the end, what is not morally appropriate for an 8 year old is not morally appropriate for an 80 year old. Good standard to remind ourselves of, thanks. Edited February 20, 2010 by CrimsonKairos Quote
harpangel Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 We ask ourselves often if the television programming that we allow in our house is something we would want on if the Jesus showed up at our door. The same thing with movies we watch from Netflix. We rarely go to the theaters because of health issues I have, but have found that we can often make a decision about a film just by the advertisements for it. I am pretty much conditioned to think about things as if Jesus is with me. It makes decision making much simpler. Quote
cpoulsen Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 I believe the counsel is wise and the Brethren (General Authorities) want us to participate in activities that are uplifting and engage one to come unto Christ. Most R-rated movies have selfish, violent, or sexual references which are all degrading to one's spiritual progression. Because we are spiritual beings here having a human experience I believe that many will succumb to the natural man when it comes to movie ratings...and ignore the counsel or override it with their own thinking...because it is easy to say it won't hurt me. I personally do not watch them. I believe that the spirit can direct one's decisions in watching or not watching but they must be listening...! :) Quote
Still_Small_Voice Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 Counsel I have heard from authorities in the church is to not trust movie ratings. I don't trust movie ratings and most movies aren't worth watching anyway. What is up with the price of 3-Dimensional movies? $11 to go to a movie?! That is a rip off. I wanted to see the movie Avatar but I will not see it because I refuse to pay $4 more to see a 3-Dimensional movie. Quote

It's $15 where I come from - and we watched Avatar - 3 times! Once at the 3D theater, once at the IMAX 3D theater (also $15), once at the 2D screen ($10). It was worth it to my family - family of 4 even, that's $60 for all 4 of us in one 3D showing. Yeah, movie-going is our favorite past-time. Quote
