FunkyTown Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 This is a big thing to remember: Nature's wrath is visited on many sites throughout the world. As more and more places are settled with more and more people, when those places get hit, more people die. It's simply probability: The more people covering the more area, the more likely any given natural disaster will affect people. Can you imagine if the Tunguska Blast happened in a more populous area?Using the USGS data, I find it difficult to produce an argument that earthquakes are really on the rise. It's clear that the there have been more of the lower magnitude earthquakes recorded, but it is unclear how much of that is due to more sensitive equipment. Also, the number of deaths doesn't really appear to be showing any kind of trend. It also looks like the number of deaths has a lot to do with where the earthquake occurs, with big spikes in deaths when they occur in areas rife with poverty and no infrastructure. So no, I'm not particularly concerned. (3 pages) (2 pages) (1 page) Quote
Hemidakota Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 No offense Hemi, but should I be trusting the United State Geological Survey or some random guy on the internet? But by all means, if you have a reputable citation for refutation of the statistics I'd be more than happy to take a gander at them.No problem.Just go out and capture the USGS Earthquake database and put in a simple excel spreadsheet and use the macro commands for adding various levels of earthquakes. marts1 Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 God uses many different ways and means to inspire people to repent. The natural disasters that happen are one of them. They help many people remember God is supreme, that all should reverence Him. Quote
Hemidakota Posted April 16, 2010 Report Posted April 16, 2010 I truly believe as you do, the church will grow in leaps and bounds when calamities begin to remove life from this earth and our national freedom becomes a major crisis. Seeing almost 14 million members today may grow over 40 million tomorrow. Quote
