Finrock Posted August 12, 2010 Report Posted August 12, 2010 Good afternoon dahlia! It is a pleasure to meet you. I hope you are having a wonderful day. :)Regarding the humility thing in another post, of course you can learn from everyone. But let's be real here, some kids who has had a year of college, who has not engaged in debate and argument because they've been raised as Mormons and accept the teachings of the Church, just cannot provide the intellectual satisfaction that I need in my search. I think I would feel better talking to the bishop.Judging from your posts I think the most important thing for you is to understand and accept that the most important thing for your conversion is not to be intellectually convinced but rather it is to to spiritually convinced. My saying this is not intended to completely disregard the role of intellectually pursuing questions and concerns, but rather it is intended to stress the greater relevancy of the Spirit in the conversion process.Teaching the gospel requires that one knows and understands the gospel. To a large extent the more informed a missionary is about the gospel, the more effective they will be in teaching it. Of course, as you have mentioned, the missionaries will generally not have all of the life experiences and scholarly background of someone who is older than they. But the question is, "Is having great life experiences and an abudance of intellectual knowledge necessary to teaching the gospel with power and authority?" I suggest that these things are not necessary. God requires a willing and humble heart. Those that come to Him in their weakness, with humility and faith, will be qualified. The most important question in this regard is, "Can the missionaries teach with the Spirit?" If the missionaries are teaching with the Spirit, then the only thing left is for you to ensure that your are sufficiently humble and willing to hear and feel those truths as the Spirit testifies through the words of the missionaries.Kind Regards,Finrock Quote
Maya Posted August 13, 2010 Report Posted August 13, 2010 Missionaries are out there just to teach pople enough to beb babtized. Actually the only things that need to be tought for babtizement are first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. Even scriptures seem to come after those. The problem is, that many deny the spirit, that once testified to them about the Church and allow to be lead by brains and not spirit... it is a big trial to many to humbly give themselves to the Spirit to lead. Actually many questions can be asked in our own mind and the answers can be found in our own mind after studying them, we do not need but the Holy Spirit to confirm our thoughts. Good study! Quote
todd520 Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 Sure you are. I was Catholic longer than you. My friend who is now LDS was also Catholic, so I was a little surprised when I learned he converted, but it is good speaking with him because we both come from similar backgrounds and yet both find something attractive about Mormonism.Regarding the humility thing in another post, of course you can learn from everyone. I was able to connect with other members and have more heartfelt discussions. The Elders can also arrange a meeting with the Bishop when you are ready, I found this helpful. Finally, download some of the programs below and listen to them while you driveWhy I BelieveMormon Identity Quote
Intrigued Posted September 15, 2010 Report Posted September 15, 2010 (edited) So, does anyone know of converts who came to Mormonism after a thorough investigation, perhaps accepting the tenets of the church, rather than 100% belief in them? Do you see the difference I'm getting at?From my (fairly) unbiased perspective as one close to the Church but not in it or of it.. I can say that it is possible. I think that it's the most compatible with current scientific thought once you disregard the fairy tales and get down to brass tacks. My advice would be to take the missionaries as deep as they will let you. I find their knowledge as a whole to be fairly underwhelming but as stated before they're not there to teach the nuances of the religion. As for your other questions.. it will make your time finding an LDS mate extremely difficult.
