ARE YOU A LIBERAL? - Dennis Prager

You say you are a liberal. Do you believe the following?

1. Standards for admissions to universities, fire departments, etc. should be lowered for people of color.

Only if Norwegian is a color.

2. Bilingual education for children of immigrants, rather than immersion in English, is good for them and for America.

I think all Americans--legal and illegal--should be subjected to immersion in at least two languages.

3. Murderers should never be put to death.

Exactly! Murderers don't kill people, guns do. :dontknow: Okay, maybe not liberal on this one.

4. During the Cold War, America should have adopted a nuclear arms freeze.

We shoulda made the other guys freeze their nuclear arms. Color me a facist on this one.

5. Colleges should not allow ROTC programs.

Maybe they should require them.

6. It was wrong to wage war against Saddam Hussein in the Gulf War.

Yes, it was. Instead we should have waged conquest over him.

7. Poor parents should not be allowed to have vouchers to send their children to private schools.

Tuition tax credits are better. That way government cannot say to private religious school, "You gots our money, now we gets to control you."

8. It is good that trial lawyers and teachers unions are the two biggest contributors to the Democratic Party.

I would complain if they were the biggest contributors to my church. :P

9. Marriage should be redefined from male-female to any two people.

Why just two?

10. A married couple should not have more of a right to adopt a child than two men or two women.

Same answer as #9.

11. The Boy Scouts should not be allowed to use parks or any other public places and should be prohibited from using churches and synagogues for their meetings.

Don't let the blue coloring of their uniforms fool ya--they're brown shirts through and through!

12. The present high tax rates are good.

Absolutely. I am fanatical in my belief that other people should pay more taxes.

13. Speech codes on college campuses are good and American values are bad.

Does this mean that those wild students will stop saying H. E. double toothpicks? :dontknow:

14. The Israelis and Palestinians are morally equivalent.

I'll be serious: Suicide bombing is immoral. Period. Otherwise, I'm sure both sides have plenty of finger-pointing to do, and they'd both be right.

15. The United Nations is a moral force for good in the world, and therefore America should be subservient to it and such international institutions as a world court.

The U.N. is a moral nuetral in the world. Anti-American despots use it as a platform, but we do sometimes get our way.

16. It is good that colleges have dropped hundreds of men's sports teams in order to meet gender-based quotas.

Since sports is the epitome of crazy people, I may agree with the first part of the statement, and not pay attention to the reason. :wow:

17. No abortions can be labeled immoral.

Well, maybe 1.2 to 1.5 can (million per year, that is).

18. Restaurants should be prohibited by law from allowing customers to choose between a smoking and a non-smoking section.

I think the liberals actually got this one right. I know I enjoy eating out with my young children a lot more than I would have ten years ago (besides the fact that I did not have young children ten years ago).

19. High schools should make condoms available to students and teach them how to use them.

Only schools with Trojan as a mascot! (j/k!!!)

20. Racial profiling for terrorists is wrong -- a white American grandmother should as likely be searched as a Saudi young male.

It's those Minnesota based Swedes that I worry about!

21. Racism and poverty -- not a lack of fathers and a crisis of values -- are the primary causes of violent crime in the inner city.

Personally, I blame violent criminals for violent crime everywhere.

22. It is wrong and unconstitutional for students to be told, "God bless you" at their graduation.

It depends on whether they say it before or after their recitation of the Articles of Faith.

23. No culture is morally superior to any other.

In comparison with mine, that might be true of all others.

Those are all liberal positions. How many of them do you hold?

I think I had somewhere around 20 of them. So, how do I rate?

I have already acknowledged on this board that he lied, and admitted to lying, about raising taxes. Additionally I acknowledged he lied to the special counsel about Monica Lewinsky.

Other than that, I'm sure there are additional items, but nothing close to the number of Bush's lies.

Yeah, but bombing the heck out of a sovereign nation to distract people from his sex stuff...how does that compare? It could not be because the Serbs were ethnically cleansing Kosovo because that really got under way AFTER NATO started the war. Also, the Clinton administration supported Croatia's efforts to kick out Serbs, Muslim Serbs and other non-Croats. The Clinton government also sold military hardware Turkey (technically violating US laws) to kill and harass millions of Kurds in south eastern Turkey and (and I am not saying there is a direct connection to campaign funds and this) stood in the way of UN actions to protect East Timorese from the oppressive military and death squads of the Indonesian government.

Democrats don't want to talk about this too much. If you want an excellent book on the hypocracy and lies of the Clinton administration pick up Noam Chomsky's "The New Military Humanism".

Pale,

I hope you see this in time.

I wanted to add to my list of Clinton's "lies." You and I have already discussed them, including my disgust with feminists' lack of censure of him for his behavior.

I believe he lied about Gennifer Flowers and Paula Jones, and of course Monica Lewinski. If you can think of any other women that came forth, let me know. I can't think of any others at the moment.

So you don't need to add them to your list. I so stipulate!

Elphaba

Elf, do you think it is possible to forgive a leader linked to sexual peccadilloes?

Of course I do. I think the majority of presidents have done the same thing Clinton did, only in an era where it was taboo for the press to discuss it, ala Kennedy.

I also think it beyond absurd the lengths Ken Starr went to to bring down Clinton no matter what. It became a mockery of the political process, wasting ungodly amounts of taxpayer's money and paralyzing Cinton's ability to do what he was elected to do--be the president.

I still consider Clinton one of the best presidents we ever had. As a woman, however, I was extremely disappointed that there was no support, by the women's groups, of Monica Lewinsky. She was a young, innocent woman who thought the POTUS was in love with her! How do you fight that!

Yet the women's groups were quiet about that. Seriously, if Clinton had been a Republican, you know there would have been an outcry.

But, of course, I forgive him. He's my boy Bill!

You ought to take the time, and it would take some time, to read my threads in Current events here. Then you'd see my positions on all of these issues. I've written books here! But I've already talked about a lot of this stuff. These guys just like to bait me. :P

I thought you would be forgiving, it is after all a very desirable quality. One item that some could have picked up upon from my question, is that people besides presidents, (from Hollwood actors to famous religious leaders) have had their sexual peccadilloes, and yet folks have found a way to forgive or excuse them. There is something about politics that brings out the tooth and fang of followers.

Why do liberals refuse to talk about the bombing of Serbia by Clinton even though it was in direct violation of international law and opposed by most countries on earth?

I was unaware that anyone was refusing to talk about it.

So, as a moderate liberal with some conservative leanings with a tendency towards libertarianism, what would you like to talk about in regards to that particular event?

And yet supported by the Republican Congress.

I haven't been avoiding you on purpose. I seem to be "discussing" on a number of different threads, and while I remember this conflict very well, I have to brush up on the details. So I need a little time.

Since you've now said you want to discuss it, I'll make it a priority and get back as soon as I can.

Elphaba

Mods, can we get this thread moved to Current Events?

Thanks,

Elphaba
