We love The Best Two Years and God's Army. Didn't like RM. Brigham City was OK, but not really a repeat. I've been wondering about Churchball. Does anyone have opinions on that one yet? Haven't seen the movie of Charlie, but just reread the book. Hope the movie is all it should be.

Hmm, I just happened to stumble upon Mobsters and Mormons on a download site I visited, have tried searching for one or two of the other LDS films mentioned but haven't found them available...never mind, one day I might just stumble upon them somewhere.

i want to see churchball that looks good...charly is really good..i haven't read the book so i dunno which is better...i kinda wanna watch god's army and brigham city

I very much disliked Brigham City. It was about a murder and quite dark IMO. I didn't see much if anything to do wit the church at all. A big disappointment. :animatedthumbsdown:

Brigham City was not a faith-promoting movie. But it was a well executed, suspenseful drama without foul language, nudity or other things that turn off the general LDS viewer. I did like at the end ****Spoiler Disclaimer****** when the Bishop has doubts about taking the sacrament and the Ward shows solidarity.

God's Army and The Best Two Years, on the other hand, do, IMO, promote faith, encourage youth to serve missions, remind Saints where their priorities should lie. And they are also good, clean fun. Acceptable Sunday movies at my house (as are Veggie Tales, Heros from the Scriptures, and a very few select other movies).

I did NOT like RM because although it was funny, it gave faithful service a beating and never confirmed the value of adhering to standards. It poked fun rather than inspired. Singles Ward was much the same way. I'm concerned that Churchball will be as well, unfortunately.

I think one of the funniest things in RM was the mom's apron of a fish! I liked the movie because it taught us how really peculiar we look to the outside world...and gives us the ability to laugh at ourselves. :)

Well my sis of faith..... I loved it. To me it helps show that there are LDS in jobs that deal with different aspects of life that we never consider. I agree it was a suspenseful drama .... something I like in a movie sometimes. And I also think the whole premise of the movie WAS at the end with the Bishop vs his doubts over the sacrement. It sent shivers up my spine to watch what happened and then I felt that love of the ward family..... and grabbed the kleenex. But that is just me ;)

Has anyone seen this movie?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0439707/

I watched it with my daughter last weekend..it was very, very funny! I think it was a pretty good potrayal of LDS people in general, and the contrast between the Italian criminal lifestyle and the Mormon one was good to see...

A good family comedy..

I have not seen this movie yet. We use Netflix, and even Brigham City is yet to be available. The two LDS movies I have seen are The Other Side of Heaven and God's Army. My thoughts:

The Other Side of Heaven is one of those non-sectarian productions that give Mormons a good name. It showed the struggles a missionary of any faith might endure--especially in an area that was largely brand new the Christianity in general. My one complaint was that the missionary's love relationship with the girl back home was trumped up in the publicity, but played a very background role in the film.

God's Army catered almost exclusively to a Mormon audience. As such, it was quite impressive. From the outside looking in, I was impressed that it grappled with a missionary who had a crisis of faith, and apparently left the church. How very biblical to deal with failures and struggles, rather than sugar-coating everything. Bravo.

PC,

I think the reason the love relationship with the girl back home was hyped was that the actress who played his girl was the best-known / easiest-recognized cast member. I read the book before I even knew it was a movie -- in the book, her part is even smaller.

Glad you liked God's Army. That one got good reviews from Michael Medved, as well.
