Elphaba Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 This isn't about Church history, but I couldn't think of a better place to put it. If you enjoy Civil War history, you'll love this. It's a feature on The American Interest website and is called The Long Recall, The Civil War in Real Time, 150 years later. This website publishes the news about the war from the papers of that day in a blog format, including hyperlinks. It's a fascinating way to learn about the war that's very different from a textbook or even the Ken Burn's special.Elphaba Quote
pam Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 This looks very interesting. I love history so am looking foward to reading this more in depth. Quote
NeuroTypical Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 Love it. Last year some folks did a twitter version of the pioneer trek from diaries - that was incredibly interesting too. Quote
rayhale Posted December 12, 2011 Report Posted December 12, 2011 If your interested in the American civil war, then see this site, or logos.com and buy their Bible study software, either way the three hundred plus books, and newspapers in the collection is free. Some noteworthy books in the set are:4 volumes of Battles and leaders of the Civil War; several books written from the Confederate standpoint; biographies of various Civil War leaders, from both sides of the war, and several other interesting (to a Civil War buff) books. Arnolt Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 (edited) Hi there, I´m from Hamburg, Germany. This sunny weekend here is to celebrate our annual harbour´s birthday, an there is a lot of tourism here in the harbour´s area. It´s always a great event. Well, my question is, why that war between the Confederated States and the Union has been named "Civil War". I´ve seen many films and authentic material, and both armys were undoubtly in official military uniforms and were organized in troops and military units under an official government and leadership. In my view it was a "Sezessionskrieg", a war where the Southern States wanted to depart from the North because of their economic situation and, of course, their dependence from slavery on their cotton fields. The majority in the North denied and abominated slavery, and this was certainly one of the reasons for the war. But was ist really a "civil" war? There were soldiers and battallions, there were military leaders like General Robert E. Lee or Stonewall Jackson, only to give an example, and there were two official armys. So why is it called a "civil" war? Edited May 13, 2012 by Arnolt Quote

So why is it called a "civil" war?Because it was internal, not against another country. Many in the South still call it "the war of Northern aggression". Quote
NeuroTypical Posted May 13, 2012 Report Posted May 13, 2012 Every third-zealous-person I meet with a strong opinion on the subject, insists it should be called "The War Between the States". LM (My dad was always forecasting the south would rise again, maybe only about half in jest) Quote
This is what I´ve read in one of my dictionaries. Let me try to translate (sorry when it´s not perfect): The Confederate States of America were a confederation, founded in 1861 by separation of eleven of the southern federal states of the USA (Union). This state, which was not recognized by any other country in the world, existed no longer until 1865; its federal states were re-integrated in the United States. Well, as Americans your hearts might beat in that nationwide feeling and awareness that makes you one nation. So I understand why it´s called "Civil War". Quote
