slamjet Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 There should be a ban on all folks who have been a member of the church for over five years, and/or have permission from the Bishop, or are accompanying a non-member or new member friend or family member to attend this class. I'm majorly annoyed when folks who have been members for decades come into the class and take up the time to bear their testimony and preach to the class. We have a teacher, go away. Yea, I got annoyed this past Sunday. Quote

Guest Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 My husband who has been a member all his life is currently attending Gospel Principle class... Just because you have been a member that long doesn't mean you can't benefit from the basics. He started going to the class because my son is getting baptized this year. He's been discussing gospel principles for FHE to prepare our son for baptism. Quote

I want to hear from the teacher and other new/non members. Not to have some "enlightened one" come in and use it as a way to make themselves feel all righteous that their words are absolutely imperative to the progress of those who are less endowed with knowledge or as a place to bear unfettered testimony. There's a once-a-month meeting for that. Or just stand in front of a mirror because that's all of what they must be thinking of.Yea, I was really annoyed. Quote

Iggy Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 I'm trying to learn patience. So deal Watch out, Slam, or you could get a calling in Primary! That is what happened to me when I asked the Branch President for a blessing of patience- two weeks later I got called as Primary 1st Councilor As a dude, you could get a calling in cub scouts or as a Primary Teacher . Oh, By The Way- it worked. I learned patience. I also learned that children love unconditionally! Quote
slamjet Posted March 28, 2011 Author Report Posted March 28, 2011 I was already a primary teacher once. Now they give me callings to fix computers. I do believe they're trying to tell me something Quote
rockatdriving Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 I actually teach the Gospel Principles class at church. I wish we had more people like yourself who were excited to come to class. My class mostly consists of missionaries or recent RMs. We don't have many non/new members and my branch prez actually asked for the leaders of RS and EQ to try and attend the class so it would create a more welcoming environment for non/new members. I can understand where you're coming from in regards to wanting them to be quiet but as a teacher I appreciate those lifelong or older members being active. It gives me a chance to see the lesson from a different perspective or perhaps they can better explain something to a non/new member than I would currently be doing. I'd be lost sometimes if it weren't for them. I hope you find class more interesting by maybe asking questions of your own. Lets say for example you're talking the subject of fasting. Perhaps you could try asking a question like "I know not everyone might not have a testimony of fasting, but I gained my through X, Y, Z experience. What about those of you who are new to the church? Have you had a unique experience with fasting? I'd love to hear what you all might feel about it." I know it might seem cheesy but it helps me become a stronger teacher when those who have been members longer, jump in to help with the lesson. Hope this helps you. Quote

slamjet Posted March 28, 2011 Author Report Posted March 28, 2011 I'm excited to be there because I am a non-member (well, x'd) but I don't want to hear from the ward's righteous ones or preached to and made to feel like I'm a spiritual dummy. I do ask questions. Problem is, as much as I try not to, my questions come off as combative and sometimes very simplistic because I'm trying to digest and learn. My teacher has gotten used to me and he has the patience of Job. But not everyone knows about my status and they treat me like a Gospel ignoramus. So they talk to me, and answer my questions as such. I just want them to go away and leave well enough alone. Quote
