He grew up in New York in the 1930's, and he has personal experiences dealing with the mafia. They call him grandpa because he is the grandpa for these boys. He takes them out to breakfast, buys them food if they are low, makes sure they have whatever they might need, makes sure people follow through with dinner appointments, etc. He has used his business connections to help some of them get jobs after they go home. I know my bro, who went to Italy has gobs of stories from the real mafia godfathers like you can't come into a neighborhood without introducing yourself to them or they will be insulted and think bad thoughts about you.
