lizzy16 Posted August 17, 2011 Report Posted August 17, 2011 So, I know SlamJet knew something about this. But it seems as if his account was suspended. After some discussion with my parents and some events recently they'd like me to figure out how I can see the history and other things thats happening while my sisters on the computer. And perhaps block things or send a direct message when shes on something she shouldn't be? She's 11. Anyone have any ideas how i can do this. It would be from me in Rexburg and her on the East Coast. Thanks bunches. Liz. Quote
Gwen Posted August 17, 2011 Report Posted August 17, 2011 set up family safety parental controls with windows live? Quote
Guest mysticmorini Posted August 17, 2011 Report Posted August 17, 2011 I'm willing to bet the simplest way would be to find family internet safety software that facilitates this. Problem is it will mostlikely have to be installed on both computers in both locations. Quote
lizzy16 Posted August 17, 2011 Author Report Posted August 17, 2011 Well yes. But i was hoping for specific software suggestions? Quote
Gwen Posted August 17, 2011 Report Posted August 17, 2011 we just started using the windows live and like it so far. you can look at a report of what the went on and how long they spent there. you can set times they are allowed on and it will lock them out for the hours you don't want them on. ours locks the kids at 8pm because they should be in bed by then, before school, etc. it's free and can be tracked remotely. Vort Posted August 17, 2011 Report Posted August 17, 2011 I would suggest Googling remote computer monitoring, remote computer monitoring software, and remote computer monitoring software free, and starting your research from there. Quote

Problem is it will mostlikely have to be installed on both computers in both locations. One can use something like OpenDNS without having to install software. It works by making it (OpenDNS) the DNS server for the network you want to watch, through it you can block websites and the like remotely as it's blocked server side not on the computer. It can display a custom message when the blocked content page is loaded and (to my understanding) keeps a log of the queries it receives (so you'll know what urls are being requested from the PC). Only downside is the queries are for the network not the individual computer (so if you have two computers you won't know which one tried to go to the website). You'll need to change the DNS settings on your router but it has instructions on how to do that. If you don't have remote access though you'll need someone to access the router locally to make the change. Edited August 17, 2011 by Dravin Quote

Iggy Posted August 18, 2011 Report Posted August 18, 2011 (edited) Well yes. But i was hoping for specific software suggestions? Asked a computer guru friend of mine and he says:Use opendns.org. Sign up for an account and do the following:- Add your network to the opendns account. Make sure the stats collection is enabled.- Download and install the IP Updater on her sisters computer. It can be configured to run silently so she won't know it's there (it's in the support section).- If there are any computers in the network that she does not want to be controlled, enter Verizon's DNS servers in the computer DNS settings. (4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2, 4.2.2.3, 4.2.2.4, 4.2.2.5 or 4.2.2.6).Now she can see where her sister has been, but also block or allow where she goes. I use this with great success on my kids computer network.<LI class="attachments uiListItem uiListVerticalItemBorder">http://4.2.2.1/ 4.2.2.1 Lizzy, if you need more information, pm me. I may have to make you a friend first, let me know okay? Edited August 18, 2011 by Iggy to put it in quotes. Quote
