Guest Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 I'm going to do a shift in the morning at the cannery in the dry pack area. What should I buy for my family? Quote
Wingnut Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 I'm going next weekend. Our cannery is much smaller than I imagine ones in Utah or Idaho are, so I'm not sure if you're asking specifically about dry pack or not -- I'm not even sure what's dry pack or otherwise.I make homemade granola every couple of weeks. Each batch uses 8 cups of oats, so I buy oats in the big 20lb bulk bags, and then store them in food buckets. (FYI, if you do buy oats in bulk, they sometimes have little bugs in them -- a result of being freshly farmed. Four days in the freezer will kill them, but they'll still end up in your food.) I also buy a 25lb bulk bag of white flour and store it in a food bucket. The cannery's hot chocolate is really good!A couple years ago I bought a can of dehydrated refried beans to try. I'd heard they weren't great, but surprisingly good, and certainly better than nothing in a pinch. I found myself in such a pinch this afternoon when my daughter requested a burrito for lunch and we were out of canned refried beans. So I re-hydrated some. They weren't quite what we're used to, but she (all of almost five years old) said her burrito tasted the same as usual.Other things I occasionally stock up on: black beans, pinto beans (we eat a lot of beans), sugar, and macaroni. I'd get wheat, except that I already have over 100 lbs of it in my basement. We don't eat much in the way of potatoes, but I know the potato pearls are really good, for dehydrated (though that's probably heresy to an Idahoan :) ). Quote
Guest Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 I prefer potato pearls. My spud farmer grandpa is probably rolling in his grave. :) I'm hoping they have a good price on Morning Moos. I can buy it at Walmart now, but the price has gone up $3 a can. It's the best powdered milk out there by far. Quote

applepansy Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 I get oatmeal, popcorn, peas, lentils, beans, macaroni, .... we rotate just about everything they have. Its been a long time since I've been to the cannery because we needed to use up some things. Quote
mirkwood Posted March 6, 2013 Report Posted March 6, 2013 I would suggest anything your family will eat. If it was me, I'd probably be doing rice and potato pearls. Quote
