Guest Posted September 30, 2013 Report Posted September 30, 2013 Watch HiJolly practice with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir! It's first on my to-do list if I make it there. Quote
Guest Posted September 30, 2013 Report Posted September 30, 2013 Will you be alone? I went with some friends in May and we had a great time! We went to City Creek mall of course, but also really enjoyed Gateway Mall (though the weather really needs to be nice to enjoy that one). I love going to Beehive House. We splurged and ate at The Roof in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. We had a table overlooking the temple and watched the sun go down behind the temple. It was lovely and the food is really good. Have a fun trip! Quote
Dravin Posted September 30, 2013 Report Posted September 30, 2013 What do you like to do on your off time? And approximately what time of year will you be there? For instance, if you are going to be there in the winter and enjoy skiing there are recommendations that can be made that don't make any sense in the summer. Likewise, if you enjoy scenic views and are willing to do some hiking (or car travel) there are trails or locations that can be suggested but are best enjoyed spring, fall, or summer (depending on how much you can tolerate heat). People can just throw things at the wall and see's what sticks, but a little more information can help people be more targeted in their suggestions. Quote
Guest Doctrine Posted October 1, 2013 Report Posted October 1, 2013 I am going in the middle of May, with one of my buddy's who is going to be spending the week at the family history building, and everyday after 5 we will get together for dinner and just hang out until the next day, we have both been to temple square many times and will only spend a few hours there to see if anything new has been added since the last time we were there, which is not much. We are going to check out the mall, and go to the saltlake temple for a session every night were there, we just don't want to be back at the hotel before 8 pm since it will most likely be along time before we go back, are there any movie theaters in the area close, remember we are walking or taking the train while were there. On are off time I like read, watch movies, write on lds.net. Quote
Guest Posted October 1, 2013 Report Posted October 1, 2013 There is a movie theater in the upper level of Gateway Mall. Quote
applepansy Posted October 1, 2013 Report Posted October 1, 2013 If possible go to This is the Place Heritage Park. Its not only fun but very educational about how the pioneers lived. It takes a block of time to get through it all. This Is The Place Heritage Park Quote
Guest Doctrine Posted October 1, 2013 Report Posted October 1, 2013 I heard there is a place in saltlake city were they dress up like the pioneers and teach you how they lived, what is the name if anyone knows. Quote

bytebear Posted October 2, 2013 Report Posted October 2, 2013 Take some time and head to Park City and the Olympic Park. Both are a short drive and so worth it. Quote
bytebear Posted October 2, 2013 Report Posted October 2, 2013 Oh, and you have to have pizza at the PIE near the University of Utah Quote
Just_A_Guy Posted October 2, 2013 Report Posted October 2, 2013 There's a little park up in The Avenues where Brigham Young and Eliza R. Snow are buried, that you might want to stop by. While you're in the area, take a few minutes and step into the Cathedral of the Madeleine.Actually, how about a self-guided walking tour of South Temple Street? I think the Masonic Temple on South Temple is usually open to visitors. If you make it up by the U of U campus, you can stop by the Salt Lake City Cemetery--most of the modern LDS Church presidents are buried there. Or you could head on over to Fort Douglas--see the military museum, or just drive around and take in some of the 19th-century buildings that are still there. If you're interested in specifically LDS architecture, you could try to arrange a visit to some older meetinghouses in the area (maybe pick some interesting targets from this website). The Garden Park chapel, for example, has absolutely beautiful grounds; and there's a fine old building in Sugar House that was designed by Joseph Don Carlos Young (here's its National Historical Register entry--website is temporarily down due to the fed govt shutdown (?!?), but will hopefully be back up within the year).Happy visiting! bytebear Posted October 2, 2013 Report Posted October 2, 2013 Also Ensign Peak is a great place to watch the sunset. Quote
pam Posted October 2, 2013 Report Posted October 2, 2013 Also the Salt Lake City cemetery is interesting. So many past leaders are buried there. *edit* I just noticed that JAG already mentioned this. Quote

kapikui Posted October 2, 2013 Report Posted October 2, 2013 I usually like to hit the Garden Restaurant, or The Roof (If I can ever afford it) Both are on the top floor of the Joseph Smith building. Quote
