Ender's Game Review

Maybe I'm just getting old (I do remember when primary was during the week), but what does TR mean?

Temple recommend. As far as I can tell, it's the Mormon equivalent of the women in bars who blatantly check out a guy's crotch before deciding whether to talk to him.

Well, I may find out what this is all about...I've got a winning bid so far, over at ebay, on the 7-book series. :-)

There's a lot more than just the 7 books... You gotta have the Shadow ones too! You'll love Bean just as much as Ender.

I assumed the seven books included the Shadow books. I know of only four Ender books in the original series: Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead, and Xenocide, Children of the Mind.

Usually, the Shadow series is sold as Ender's Shadow Quintet (there are 5 books so far) or Bean Saga.

The Ender's Game series is also a Quintet with Ender's Exile inserted between Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead.

The Ender's Game quintet is sometimes combined with the Formic Wars Series - Earth Unaware and Earth Afire which are chronologically before Ender's Game which makes the 7-book package.

Those are the books in the Ender Universe so far. I may have missed any new books that just got released. I haven't read the 5th Shadow book nor any in the Formic Wars yet!

It was that awesome.

I opened this thread up, excited to read your review, and then - NOTHING. Just total speechlessness. LOL.

Then I scanned through the next pages and saw more input. Sounds like it's definitely worth a watch, and even better than the books, at least it doesn't hurt to see the movie first which is great for me!

So now it's a toss up between this one and Thor 2 which is coming soon as well. I'm sure you'll beat me to that one too, so maybe you'll post a review on that one when you do!

Don't bother with Thor 2. Go Ender!

I love Thor but I can't stand Natalie Portman. It was such a relief not to have her in The Avengers...

I'll definitely be seeing Thor 2. Maybe not before Ender but Thor 2 is definitely on our list.

Are you saying you're NOT going to see Thor 2? NEVAH! ALL LIES! ;)

We're watching Thor 2, of course. I have 2 boys (son and husband) biting at the bit to go see it. But my other son and I are both begging to see Ender again before we go see Thor. I think we're going to end up watching both on Friday.

I prefer to think of Thor 2 as Loki 3.

I LOVE LOKI!!!! No, not the comic book Loki. I love the way he is portrayed by the actor (hah, I don't even know his name). Really encapsulates his mischievousness in a very charming way that I end up loving and hating him with equal intensity. LOL.

I just read Ebert's Review of Ender's Game. The funny thing is - the things he didn't like about the movie (as opposed to the book) are the things that I like about the movie.

His first observation - the movie packs too much plot in 114 minutes. Uhm... no it does not. It packed bare minimum needed to complete that particular plotline from the ginormous plotlines in the book. You can't make the book fans happy with this one. They even slashed Demosthenes and Locke completely out and made the battle school a lot targeted and smaller. Bean and Petra are reworked to simplify the plotline, etc. etc. etc. Dunno what movie he was watching on this one. But the bare minimum plotline worked for me!

His 2nd observation - pacing is off. I left the theater after the first scene and got thrown into Ender's world without leaving it until the planet exploded. I didn't notice any pacing issues. The extra scenes after the finale maybe... but that's just because I just got off the major high of the war.

3rd observation - not as grand as it should. Uhm... I read the book before Windows was invented... the war scenes were quite modernly grand and still stayed true to how it was originally written to have been like.

4th observation - characterization issues... how they talk about being mean but they're not. Softer edges is the phrase he used. Dunno what book Ebert was reading, but Ender was never mean. Peter was psychotic mean but he was only in the movie for 15 seconds. Ender portrayed in the movie his capacity to use brutal force to win a fight but, just like the book, his base kindness and empathy for the enemy is what sets him apart. That's the whole point of the book! All the other characters - Ebert says they were constantly around Ender when Graff made it so he is isolated... most of the book is delving into the mind of Ender. You can't unearth what is going on in Ender's mind in a movie unless you put him in situations where he talks about it. You can't get him to talk about it unless there's somebody to talk to.

So, I don't know... that review just didn't match my experience.

I'm waiting for Vort to go watch the movie so he can chime in with his more technical critical reviews.

Tom Hiddleston.

I wouldn't know this otherwise but having since joined tumblr, I am finding myself deeply lost in the sea of fandoms..

I just read Ebert's Review of Ender's Game.

What's this? Ebert is providing reviews from the Great Beyond?

If he really wants to watch a movie there, I can suggest one that me might like a whole lot more, even than Ender's Game.

Oooops! Sorry. It's rogerebert.com's review. Not Ebert himself. I tend to not read the small print of who the actual reviewer is...

The Master of Science in Software Engineering (MS SE) program at Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley is designed for technical professionals interested in working as engineers, developers, technical project leads, and development managers. The program emphasizes key skills in requirements analysis, architectural design, and construction that are necessary for successful product development.

For full-time students, the program is completed in one year. For part-time students, the program is completed in two years.

The program delivers a team-based, project-oriented curriculum focused on agile applications reflective of the dynamic Silicon Valley software industry. Through authentic project work reflective of real-world work scenarios, students master modern software engineering methods and technologies across the development lifecycle, learn to align software engineering decisions with the company's business goals, and develop the communication, teamwork, and negotiation skills critical to successful technical leadership.

The program features a Technical track focusing on technical leadership skills, a Development Management track focusing on project management leadership skills, and a Connected Embedded Systems concentration focusing on the fusion of hardware and software skills for dealing with cloud-based sensor networks. Within any of the tracks, you will learn how to align software engineering decisions with your company's business goals and to develop the communication, teamwork, and negotiation skills needed to be an effective technical leader.

Unique Features of Master's Program

Distinctive Teaching Methodology. Carnegie Mellon faculty members use a wide variety of teaching methods to maximize students' learning experiences, including discussion sessions, small group coaching, problem-driven seminars, individual and "just-in-time" instruction in the form of online materials, learning guides, and short tutorials.

Project-Based Curriculum. The program features a heavy reliance on learn-by-doing projects, case analyses, and industrial practicums so that coursework is immediately applicable to responsibilities at work.

Team Orientation. Teamwork is fundamental to the program because all real projects are a collaborative effort, and sharing work enables students and their teams to produce more authentic work products.

Software Engineering Curriculum

Features of the Full-time program

Research Concentration

Allows students with a passion for research the opportunity to do in-depth research projects with the faculty. By substituting track courses with directed research courses in the Spring and Summer semesters, a student can spend two semesters furthering their research career. Admitted full-time engineering students should apply during their first semester, seek sponsorship from a faculty research advisor, and provide an abstract of their proposed research.

If you are the type of person who has an interest in computers and understanding how it all comes together, then online degrees in engineering could be a great fit. Software engineers bring mathematics and computer science together to write and develop new computer, Web, and network software. Ultimately, software engineers need to be able to adjust to new advancements in technology, and be able to adjust their roles accordingly.

Typically, software engineers are divided into two specific fields, applications engineers and systems engineers. Applications engineers study the needs of users and develop ways to improve existing software, or create entirely new programs. Applications engineers must know, and use, a number of different computer languages, like, C, C++, Java, and Python.Typically, they develop for business applications, but can also work with developing databases. Systems engineers, on the other hand, coordinate a particular organization's computer needs. They organize and develop plans to order, inventory, and care for the computer needs of a department, or in some cases, and entire business or organization.
