when you recieve your mission call....you get a list of things you can and cannot bring along. I will say that a guitar is not something you can bring along. My son could not take his trumphet, but he did take his mouth piece. He carries it with him and whenever he hears or can see someone playing he approaches them and asks if he might play a few notes. I would say no to an ipod.

What are you allowed to take on a Mission? - specifically can you take a guitar, ipod, etc. Please elaborate, thanks! :dontknow: :) :hmmm::huh:

Maureen, congratulations. Has the Lutheran Church called you on a mission? Or are you asking what an LDS missionary could or would take on a mission? :hmmm:

No not me! My nephew will be going on a mission soon and he loves his guitar, so I was just curious if he will be able to take it with him. My daughter and her friend were hoping to give their mutual mission bound friend an ipod (with already downloaded songs) as a going away gift. It's just good to know ahead of time what's allowed.

OK. As someone has said, he should get a list of approved articles before he leaves. Missions vary. Its really up to the Mission President what the missionaries can and can't do. Some are very strict, some are more relaxed. Its important for him to be focused on the work and anything that detracts from that won't really help him. Its hard to really say. Maybe something to wear or an inspirational book. He will have some time each week when he can wear casual stuff. Maybe a writing set so he can write to you? :D

Like it has been mentioned, it is up to the mission president what he can and can not take. When I served MY mission....... seems like a million years ago now, but I went to France and then hurt my knee so bad that I finished my mission in Salt Lake City, I know that is weird to serve in two totally different missions but I did. Anyways, in both missions I would say NO to the ipod, but guitars were allowed in both. I had companions in both missions that had their guitars and I learned to play a little while serving.

What I would do, is when you get the list of approved items, if the guitar is not on the list, write to the mission president and ask...... afterall, what is the worst he can say? "No?"

The general idea is that while one serves on a mission they serve and do G-d's will rather than their own. I had hoped to use my music talents while on my mission but I was told it was better to serve according to my call. I left my clasical gutar at home - played some on my mission but I do not regret at all my missionary service. - There is a time for all seasons.

I had a guitar on my mission. However, a group of missionaries got into trouble with their guitars and there came a ban throughout our mission. I placed my guitar in the mission home until I went home. So, I would wait until the missionary is the field and just check with the Mission President for that particular mission. If nobody is ruining things and your missionary is well trusted to do his work instead of slacking-off playing the guitar all day, then he should be fine.

i think the no musical instruments has become an across the board, i know most of guys that have come here and left from here have all said the same thing on that, no. i believe it's not just a time thing but also a space thing. they can only carry so much from location to location. i do believe they are encouraged to share their talents when they can, playing piano in sacrament meeting, building relationships with the members and investigators who also have that talket or interest (and have the instrument in the home already).

i know it is very specific as to what kind of music they can listen to. so if the ipod is allowed check on what kind of music. just because it's wonderful uplifting music doesn't mean it's on the list of approved music.

hummmm i wonder if harmonicas are allowed?

Like it has been said, it really does depend on the mission that he goes on. My friend was allowed to take his classical guitar with him to play. But what he can play and listen to (concerning the iPod) is usually general throughout the world. Usually what the rule on music is, is that you can listen to hymns, the mormon tabernacle choir, other church type songs and music that is over 100 years old. I assume that goes for playing as well. I hope that helps and I hope I'm not misguiding at all...

Safe bet for gifts:

Journal

White shirts (Lots and lots of those)

Ties

Socks

Gloves (if he is going somewhere that is cold)

Hat (same)

Cookies. Lots of them. Sent every month.

They seem mundane, but believe me, it is nice to have these and plenty of them...

Our Mission didn't allow musical instruments. But the mission I just left when we moved did (one of the Sister's played her clarinet in Sacrament meeting).

In my son's mission personal music devices were not allowed. If you can put on headphones and shut out your companion then it does not encourage conversation and sharing.

Yes I know that is good some times but in his missions they were not to be closing themselves off with headphones.

Day in and day out I see families, couples and people on the street that have shut out the sounds of the world for their own listening pleasure.

I have an IPod, listen to it in my car system but only at the gym on headphones.
