I would say that biographies are a good source of history. The ones I would recommend are:

Mormon Enigma:Emma Hale Smith by Linda King Newell and Valeen Tippetts Avery...and

Brigham Young: Pioneer Prophet by John G. Turner

There's an Institute of Religion manual that you can get through the distribution center with a good overview of Church history. I think it's called, "History of the Church".
