Sunday21 Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 Has anyone seen God's Army? Is is appropriate to view on Sunday? Quote
Guest LiterateParakeet Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 Sure, it's a movie about LDS missionaries. I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed Richard Dutcher's other films. Brigham City (which is suspense and murder mystery--NOT a Sunday film) and the other one whose name escapes me at the moment. Quote
pam Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 The only other Richard Dutcher movie that I know of that is set around Mormons is States of Grace. He has however made other movies. Quote
Guest LiterateParakeet Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 Thanks Pam, that's it. States of Grace. I love that one too, but some members don't like it I think. Yes, sadly Richard Dutcher has left the church and the movies he makes now are usually rated R. I haven't seen any of those. :) Quote
Lakumi Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 I finally remembered where I heard the term God's Army, it was in Fist of the North Star, where they terrorize a town and Kenshiro kills them. Not the friendly bunch of missionaries the term more appropriately goes to... Quote
Guest Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 God's Army is a good uplifting story about the positive changes brought forth by the resolute faith of a missionary... Not only in his companions but also by the people he taught.... Goof Sunday movie I think. Quote
Latter Days Guy Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 There are Sunday movies? Never heard of that before! Quote
pam Posted May 22, 2014 Report Posted May 22, 2014 There are Sunday movies? Never heard of that before! I think she is asking to attempt to keep the spirit on Sundays. Not that there are movies designed specifically for Sundays. Daybreak79 1 Quote
Palerider Posted May 25, 2014 Report Posted May 25, 2014 Not seen it yet myself...hope to before long Quote
Sunday21 Posted May 25, 2014 Author Report Posted May 25, 2014 Saw the movie. Awesome. Great story. Great cast Quote
pam Posted May 25, 2014 Report Posted May 25, 2014 I guess I need to see it now. I have yet to watch it. Sunday21 1 Quote

Sunday21 Posted May 26, 2014 Author Report Posted May 26, 2014 Wooow. Started to watch gods army II. I can see why some do not like it. Central characters are missionaries and are completely breaking mission rules. This rule breaking is shown as a good thing. Take a homeless man into their apartment. Give key to their apartment to a young woman. Oh my. Not a Sunday movie Quote
Latter Days Guy Posted May 26, 2014 Report Posted May 26, 2014 So helping a homeless man is wrong? Been a while since I watched it but was there a reason why they give a key to the young woman? Quote
Sunday21 Posted May 27, 2014 Author Report Posted May 27, 2014 So helping a homeless man is wrong? Been a while since I watched it but was there a reason why they give a key to the young woman? The missionaries ask the young lady to check up on the homeless man throughout the day Quote
Latter Days Guy Posted May 27, 2014 Report Posted May 27, 2014 So nothing sinister then other than checking that the homeless guy they are helping is ok? Some serious rule breaking there then!! Quote
Sunday21 Posted May 27, 2014 Author Report Posted May 27, 2014 So nothing sinister then other than checking that the homeless guy they are helping is ok? Some serious rule breaking there then!!There is also some handholding with young lady by missionary. Inappropriately dressed mormon ladies at lds party. Quote
Sunday21 Posted May 27, 2014 Author Report Posted May 27, 2014 I guess I need to see it now. I have yet to watch it.Wish lds movies came to cinemas here. Only way to watch is to buy or watch on YouTube. Quote

Definitely not all of the rule breaking is shown as a good thing. This is one of my favorite movies. The central theme (I hope this isn't a spoiler) is about Christ and how the Atonement can bless each of us in different ways. Some of the characters in the movie commit some serious sins, some just get a bit off track, but they are all touched, changed and uplifted by the Savior and His atonement. It shows the error of being a Pharisee (i.e. a father telling his son that he would rather the son come home in a casket than come home unworthily.) Quote
