Guest Yediyd Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 During the sermon on the mount (found in Matt. chapters 5,6,7) Jesus spoke of walking the extra mile... A little known fact about the customs of that time period... The Jews were a concured people, the Romans being the ruling force of that time period. The Romans had a law that stipulated that any Roman could require any Jew to carry their packs for up to one mile outside of any town. The Jews would stake out mile markers around their towns so that when one of the hated Romans would force them to carry their packs for that mile...whenever they would reach the marker, the Jews would throw down the packs, spit on the ground, turn tail, and "huff" back to town!Jesus was telling the people on that mountian to walk an extra mile, because the first mile was required by law...but if any Jew happily walked an extra mile for a Roman...THIS would get that Roman's attention!!! The Roman in question would be more apt to listen to the Jew about his "one true G-d" during that second mile. The Roman EXPECTED the Jew to throw down his packs at the mile marker, a TRUE follower of Christ would happily carry the packs, not one...but TWO miles for the oppressive Roman. When you think about the way that the Jews were treated by the Romans...this Idea of walking that extra mile gives new meaning to the concept of humility and love for one's enimies. I believe THIS is what Jesus was truly teaching. Quote

CrimsonKairos Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 While we're doing the Hebrew thing, allow me to extend the traditional Jewish greeting on the Sabbath: Shabbat shalom. (for everyone else, that means "peaceful Sabbath"). Of course, they say it on Satudray...*sigh*...c'mon guys, get with the program. B) Quote

Guest Yediyd Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 Also, I have Two books that I really love...One is: Hebrew for dummies, I took that out of the library and loved it so much that I bought a copy of it...The other is: Hebrew in 10 min a day. It has stickers in it that I turned into flash cards and have learned alot from. I bought both these books at Barns and Noble Book store. Also...I truly LOVE the authors: Body and Brock Theone...they have written MANY novels about Jewish history and New Testiment times...check out their AD Chronicals series...These authors are the ones who put the inspiration in me to learn Hebrew!!!!! They go into the Hebrew and customs so beautifully in each of their novels.Toh dah, Yediyd!! :)Bevakasha!!! Pushka!!!! Quote
