Dr T Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 I went to Sequoia National Park yesterday. I saw General Shermon, reportedly "the worlds biggest living thing." it was amazing. Being in the Giant Forest really showed God's power and great work! I'd highly recommend going to see that if you can. Quote
Dror Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 Did you feel like a hobbit visiting Fangorn? Quote
Dr T Posted June 25, 2007 Author Report Posted June 25, 2007 Just looking up as you drive and then walking amongst those giants was phenomenal. Quote
pushka Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 Doesn't the foot of the tree in the 2nd picture look like animal legs and paws??!! Wonder what the story is around that.. Quote
Vanilla Posted June 25, 2007 Report Posted June 25, 2007 Do they still have the tree that you can drive through? It had fallen down and went right over the road so they cut a piece out, kind of like a tunnel. I went there as a young child and that is what I remember the most. Quote
Dr T Posted June 25, 2007 Author Report Posted June 25, 2007 Yes they do Nilla. === Push, I wonder what the story was/is Some sequoias have bark that is two feet think! That is amazing. Looking at that tree, I thought, "I could make a nice house out of that" and then I remembered why I stopped by to see it. When I heard it was so close, I figured to go check it out before some thug set it on fire or defaced it in some way. Quote

miztrniceguy Posted June 26, 2007 Report Posted June 26, 2007 there used to be one you could drive thru that was a standing, living tree....not a fallen one. 'course that was 30 yrs ago i was there...lots can happen in 30 yrs Quote
shanstress70 Posted June 26, 2007 Report Posted June 26, 2007 That's an incredible picture, Dr T! I went to see more images of it so I could get some idea of the scale. I also wanted to find out how old it was and found that it's more than 2000 years old! I must see this some day. Quote
Dr T Posted June 26, 2007 Author Report Posted June 26, 2007 :) Yes, they estimate that it is 2200 years old. It is spectacular. We are going to take our children camping in the CA Redwoods this summer. They are taller than these but not bigger in overall mass. That should be fun. I hope you do get to see the Sequoias some day Shan. Quote
Fiannan Posted June 26, 2007 Report Posted June 26, 2007 What code do you use to post pictures? Quote
sixpacktr Posted June 26, 2007 Report Posted June 26, 2007 question: Are the Sequoias/Redwoods only in CA? It seems that is the only place I hear of them... Quote
BenRaines Posted June 26, 2007 Report Posted June 26, 2007 Sequoia National Park is east of Visalia, California. There are redwoods along much of the west coast from Monterey, California north. Many of them are the Coastal Redwood verus the Sequoia Redwood. As awesome as the trees are the life under them is amazing as well, ferns, moss and other life forms. There are some beautiful ones I have seen in Felton and Boulder Creek, California just north of Santa Cruz. Ben Raines Quote
Dr T Posted June 26, 2007 Author Report Posted June 26, 2007 I'm not sure if you are asking me because I don't use a code when posting a pic. I add the picture address highlight it and then click the little tree on the tool bar. Quote
mrsfocus Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 You would like the book The Wild Trees by Richard Preston. Its a whole different world up in those trees. Quote
StrawberryFields Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 Our Sequoia used to belong to Karl Malone it is silver with all of the whistles and bells. Quote

I was a child when we drove through it. I wonder if it's the same one that Nilla Vanilla said had fallen. Quote
Dr T Posted June 27, 2007 Author Report Posted June 27, 2007 No. The one that had fallen over was just a normal sequoia that they carved a tunnel into. Quote

pushka Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 Wow! That drivethru tree was amazing!! Thanks for the links miztrniceguy :) Quote
Dr T Posted June 27, 2007 Author Report Posted June 27, 2007 That tree must be in the redwoods that we are going to camp in this summer. I'm excited to see that and see the look on my kids faces. The Sequoia's that I saw were not where this drive through tree is. Quote
