I had posted this on the Ask Gramps facebook and I got this response from someone:

Is this really the dignified image of an ambassador for Christ that we want to project? We're supposed to be in the world----not of it. Would we be comfortable seeing President Monson do this on a city street? If it's okay for this Elder to dance like this in public, why is it not okay for him to dress like the other street performer as well?

I responded that I don't think President Monson would have any problem with this missionary.  He was sharing his talent and in a good way and nothing was done that was inappropriate.  I also would have no problem seeing President Monson doing this on a street corner.

But getting dressed like a street performer projects the image that he is a street performer and not a missionary...

Where do you draw the line?  The line is in his name tag and his proselyting mission.  There's no problem with a missionary showing MMA moves to a group while proselyting in his suit.  There's even no problem with a missionary showing MMA moves to a group while in his dress-down-for-service-work outfit.  But there is a problem with a missionary entering a cage match (not a proselyting activity) or even getting down and dirtying up his suit to engage a fighter on a friendly match or demo'ing an MMA move on the street.  You can replace cage fighting with basketball or a sprint-run (very popular video of a missionary racing people in his suit and a book of mormon held in his hand on mormon channel).

Do you see the line there?

Yeh I was surprised when he brought up cage fighting as a talent as a comparison.  Really?

Oh we're still debating the issue on facebook.

Went to Ask Gramps on Facebook to check out the comments about this. I'm glad to see that most are positive. I thought the video was great, personally. Being a convert myself, seeing a missionary doing this would make me a lot more likely to listen to what he had to say. It makes him more "real" and approachable. The missionaries who taught my mother and me, as well as those who continued to come visiting us for years after the original two had left, were always light-hearted and full of fun. They played ping-pong with me, showed us what I called "missionary tricks", and tons of other activities that were wholesome and good-natured. They were our dear friends as well as missionaries. And it was because they weren't afraid to do what this wonderful Elder is doing in this video...identify and connect with people.
