That doesn't mean things need to be changed, but if we think "America" has died, what's the point of doing anything political, even talking about it? To answer that I'd have to go into a topic that I said I wouldn't. So, sorry. 2 hours ago, yjacket said: The point is that you fight for the right thing no matter what. It doesn't matter that the old American culture has died; those who have the remnants of the old American culture in them fight on because that is just what you do. That is how you carry on in some small part the old America. Life isn't so much about the results, because in the long run we are all dead. Life is about the struggle, the character you build, who you become by doing the right thing over and over and over again no matter the consequences no matter the chances of success. "It matters not how strait the gate..." P.S. Actually (and this is drifting off topic) I'm not convinced that a consideration of the consequences necessarily has no part in deciding what is "the right thing". But we've had this argument before over whether it would be "the right thing" to steal food for starving children, given that it was a definite choice between that and allowing them to die. (My position then - as it still is now - is that would steal food if that was the only way I could keep my children, and I wouldn't repent of it afterwards as to do so would be to wish my children dead.) The American dream is still very much alive and America isn't dying. Big difference between struggling and dead, but it's not even struggling. Immigrants moving here for a shot at success shows that the American dream is doing fine. Edited June 27, 2016 by MormonGator Quote
anatess2 Posted June 27, 2016 Report Posted June 27, 2016 I don't agree that America has died. It is simply being suppressed by those who don't understand what is America. America is Freedom. With Freedom comes great responsibility. THAT culture of self-responsibility is undiluted Americanism. That Americanism is suppressed by a lot of young'uns that have handed over their responsibility to the political class in exchange for "safety", "security", "guaranteed outcomes". A Filipino immigrant to America is American first, Filipino second. They speak English because the laws are in English - it is their responsibility to learn it. They assimilate because it is the way to pursue happiness. They work hard because it is their responsibility to succeed, not have the way paved for them. They defend their freedoms through political activism. But they go home and raise their kids with the Filipino culture of family and personal discipline, vinegar-smelling kitchen, the rice cooker, and the big spoon and fork hanging on the wall. The Welfare System is anti-American. The TSA is anti-American. The Democrat Party is anti-American. There is nothing more anti-American than handing over your right to due process because you're scared of a terrorist shooting people. Since when is America a coward? That's completely un-American! unixknight Posted June 29, 2016 Report Posted June 29, 2016 My 16 year old daughter is in Germany right now and tells me everybody there is talking about Brexit with anxiety. It seems they feel that with Germany being the only EU nation that still has any economic power, it'll be on them to prop up everybody else and they're not thrilled about it. ... The historical hilarity of that is almost palpable. Quote

The Corporate bigwigs sent out a missive for the British peeps working in the company to please vote to Remain... funny thing is, the Brits that I directly work with all said, Rubbish! Hah hah. Quote
