Is there a way to mark a thread as ‘read’?

Is there a way to mark a thread as ‘read’? That is to mark the thread in such a way that it does not come up during a search for unread content?

What I do, is load each topic of interest in a new tab (ctrl + shift + click on the little icon that loads the first unread post), then I click the "Mark site read" link to mark the remaining threads read.

I can't find a better way.

I too wish there were a way to ignore sub-forums and threads similar to how you can ignore users.  (NOTE: A while back, I signed up for a demo version of the software that runs this site - so I could see what the back end is like - and I don't recall any settings there that might enable the option to ignore sub-forums and threads, so I think we're  out of luck - unless the developer adds a new feature.)
