There's no such thing as a stupid question.

In my view a testimony is a statement of belief. Usually refers to a religious belief. An example would be: "I belief in Jesus Christ", Or it could be put "I have a testimony of Jesus Christ"

I hope that answers your question.

I find it hard to explain what a testimony is on a personal level, as to me it is a spiritual feeling/witness/knowledge/fact and more... all in one. It's like when something makes complete sense to you in a nice peaceful warm way, but like Gwen said, you can't prove it to others in any physical way. For example I know that my Heavenly Father lives and loves me and when I think it or say it (or write it in this case) I instantly feel a lovely rush of warmth and peace. I'd say that's the Holy Ghost confirming that what I know is true. How you gain a testimony is a different question - but at the same time it's along the same lines... :)

I am still stuck at the airport so here is my understanding as a scientist. As we look around it can be difficult to realize what is true and lasting from what is an illusion and temporary. Some people think that physical things are real – but what will such things be in 10,000 years – or a billion years – or a trillion years.

Many scientist say the even the universe will fade into thermodynamic nothingness and chaos. So what is real?

A testimony is the ability to see beyond the façade of what some call physical reality and realize that such things cannot endure but that there is a reality that will remain when that which is temporary has passed. Only that which is spiritual will endure.

Without a belief in that which is eternal (religion if you will) one cannot see beyond that which is temporary – regardless of how much they pretend or try to copy – by their own admission – without a belief in the eternal (a definition of G-d) they have nothing that can last.

Are we talking about the common fare at testimony meetings?

Many of those are travel logs or "Thank-you-monies".

A testimony in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at a Fast and Testimony meeting should include:

A spiritual witness as to the divinity of our Savior Jesus Christ and His loving, infinite atonement.

A spiritual witness as to the validity of the restoration of the gospel in these, the Latter-days, which includes:

... a witness to the truth of The Book of Mormon

... a witness of the divine calling of the Prophet Joseph Smith

... a witness of the divine calling of our current prophets, seers and revelators.
