kona0197 Posted March 10, 2008 Report Posted March 10, 2008 So I was wondering why having a beer ever so often is a bad thing? I realize drinking alcohol is against the word of wisdom yet if I recall correctly even Jesus had wine. Please don't tell me that wine was non-alcoholic. I'm pretty sure it was. Quote
skalenfehl Posted March 10, 2008 Report Posted March 10, 2008 The short answer? That's what we've been commanded. My opinion/the long answer? God is no respecter of persons. If someone can handle only one beer but someone else can't, well then Father in Heaven probably just makes it a commandment across the board. Kind of like Mom or Dad saying, "If I let one of the kids do it..." Quote
kona0197 Posted March 10, 2008 Author Report Posted March 10, 2008 Guess I'll never get a Temple recommend then. I like a drink after a long day at work. Quote

Please don't tell me that wine was non-alcoholic. I'm pretty sure it was.Although current Church doctrine is that all alcoholic beverages are forbidden, in the past the Word of Wisdom was interpreted differently. Some have noted that it is "strong drinks" which are forbidden and that "mild drinks" made from barley are permissible; in the old days "strong drink" referred to hard liquor and distilled spirits, while "mild drink" referred to lower-alcohol fermented beverages like beer (which was often barely considered alcohol). Several General Authorities in the past (the Apostles Brigham Young Jr. and John Henry Smith as recently as 1901) have asserted that beer is thus allowed, and this was also apparently the view taken by Joseph Smith himself.Around the turn of the century the view generally became that all alcoholic beverages were to be avoided, but strict adherence was still not enforced, and many leaders in the church did not keep the Word of Wisdom perfectly. Only in 1921 was strict adherence to the Word of Wisdom made a requirement for temple attendance, as the Church was influenced by Prohibitionist propaganda and allied itself with the movement. Quote

skalenfehl Posted March 10, 2008 Report Posted March 10, 2008 If God does not want us to drink beer why give us the ingredients to make it?He also gave us the technology to make computers and have an internet. That doesn't mean we should view pornography. Quote

NeuroTypical Posted March 10, 2008 Report Posted March 10, 2008 So I was wondering why having a beer ever so often is a bad thing?Because it makes someone I love have DT's, not sleep for weeks on end, and struggle to not hate herself.Your mileage may vary, and if you insist on ingesting alcohol, I pray that your mileage may vary greatly.LM Quote
Brother-K Posted March 10, 2008 Report Posted March 10, 2008 Well some us can handle a drink every now and then...I understand that some people have no problem with controling how much to drink , I'm pretty sure that Heavenly Father want us to use our best judgment but I guess people abuse it too much in our days, so here is the commandment for every one .You can compare it to: don't drink and drive, some people probably can control how much they drink but most can't and abuse it , so they made the law for every one. Even though I wasn't in the beginning. Quote
tubaloth Posted March 10, 2008 Report Posted March 10, 2008 So I was wondering why having a beer ever so often is a bad thing? I need to know really what your definition of a “bad thing" is. Where do you cross the line? Is two beers a “bad thing” three? Next what made you the one that decided what is bad or good in this situation. I think that is something more suitable for a God? Really that is one of the things God does. He tells us what things are good and bad. How is not honoring my Father and Mother a “bad thing”? They aren’t the smartest people in the world! I have a college degree and my dad doesn’t! I’m sure we can justify most of the commandments as not that “bad” in certain situations. Nephi killed somebody, so that means I can kill somebody too?Really it does come down to a test of our faith. Is Beer a GOOD thing, probably not the best? There are problems that can come from drinking of Alcohol. Do we want to walk as close to that line between good and bad, or do you want to stay far away from the “bad” side. Even if all of this isn’t true, one thing is! Can you really feel the spirit if you are drunk or even on a buzz from beer! You actually want to do something to your body that makes it so you can’t feel the spirit? To not be with the Holy Ghost, a member of the Godhead! Doing something that makes it harder (or even impossible) to feel the spirit of God seems like a “bad thing” in my book. One that wants to follow Christ, well follow him no matter what the cost. (Luke 18:18-25.)18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.21 And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.23 And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.24 And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!25 For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. We all lack things! Even if we don’t think they are “Bad” we don’t set the requirements God does! Its up to us to follow them! Quote

sixpacktr Posted March 10, 2008 Report Posted March 10, 2008 Yes, Jesus drank wine. And yes, it was alchoholic. What is your point, I guess? Modern day revelation counsels us not to partake of alcoholic beverages. Read Section 89 of the Doctrine and Covenants. Not only are there health benefits from obeying the WoW, but also protection against 'conspiring men'. God requires of his followers obedience. Sometimes in things that don't make sense (to us) or aren't easy. But it is what it is... Quote
crytsprospect Posted March 10, 2008 Report Posted March 10, 2008 There is a time for everything and Kona your doing just fine as you are later you might change your mind but until then Enjoy. kona0197 Posted March 10, 2008 Author Report Posted March 10, 2008 Well if Jesus drank wine I see no reason why I can't. I don't get drunk. I drink for the taste. And it calms me down a bit. Health benefits? Isn't drinking a glass of red wine good for the heart? And I've heard that drinking beer is good for you. You guys seriously do not think the Church controls your life too much? Because of the WoW? Because of the expectation of serving others? Because of our payment of tithes? Because our religion isn't to be a Sunday 1 hour religion, but completely penetrates and influences our lives? The Church has never told me how to vote, it has never come in and taken my possessions for 'not complying', it has yet to threaten me physically unless I 'shape up'. So why do YOU think it controls our lives too much? Quote
Ray A Posted March 10, 2008 Report Posted March 10, 2008 I don't think a brother or sister who "imbibes" should be lectured or ostracised. Be glad they are still sympathetic to Mormonism, and still believe. In the 7th volume of the Church History we have this entry:"Sometime after dinner we sent for some wine. It has been reported by some that this was taken as a sacrament. It was no such thing,; our spirits were generally dull and heavy, and it was sent for to revive us.... I believe we all drank of the wine, and gave some to one or two of the prison guards." (John Taylor, in History of the Church, Vol. 7, page 101)As strong as he was, Joseph also imbibed on this occasion, to "revive" his spirits. The Word of Wisdom was given by Joseph in 1833: 1 A Word OF Wisdom, for the benefit of the council of high priests, assembled in Kirtland, and the church, and also the saints in Zion— 2 To be sent greeting; not by commandment or constraint, but by revelation and the word of wisdom, showing forth the order and will of God in the temporal salvation of all saints in the last days— As one who deals with drunks on a regular basis, I can see the wisdom of abstinence, and I think the Church move to make it more binding has been a good thing. But we need to be careful this does not engender a spirit of self-righteousness. A brother/sister who admits "imbibing" is honest. Many others may imbibe in secret yet present a facade of holiness. If eleven years after his revelation, Joseph still felt the need to "imbibe" to "revive his spirits", who are we to judge "lesser mortals"? Quote
crytsprospect Posted March 10, 2008 Report Posted March 10, 2008 My husband has many members who love and support him no matter what he does. We are lucky they see him as more than someone who drinks. Quote
