  1. I have actually been mulling this over. Truly, I think, if we lived the letter of the WoW then meat on ce a week, or every other week would be sufficient. My reasoning is I don't need to kill something (animal) at this stage of the game to not be hungry. Last week I ate at In n Out in American Fork and didn't feel well the rest of the day. We'll see, I think about this quite a bit now. I have read that Brigham Young, Wilford Woodruff and others were vegetarian. I'm not sure how this played out in the "Old West" without refrigeration, transportation, etc.
  2. Ah, dinosaurs, I am sorry I came late to the discussion, that's what I get for not lurking. I love dinosaurs, I love going to DNM in Eastern Utah. They are neat. They walked the Earth. Why should we pay attention to them? Why do they matter? Because, they are part of the planets history. I got to give the lesson two years ago on Genesis Chapter 1 in Gospel Doctrine. I started by saying something like: OK, we're talking Creation today, we'll stick to the lesson. If you have issues with Evolution that's fine, but I don't so we're sticking to the lesson. And we did. Some years ago in Conference President Hinckley was specific in his statement that the Church takes no offical stance on Evolution, we are concerned about where men and women are going, not where we came from. I think that leaves the door open for a variety of beliefs on the subject. And we call it the "Theory of Evolution" it can be described by the laws of Natural Selection as well as the science of genetics. Theory in name, but law in practice.
  3. A&E is running a new series called Longmire, it is about a modern day Wyoming sheriff. Good stuff.

    Chess

I wasn't sure where to put this, so I figured sports would work since SI ran an article on chess some years back. Anyway, anyone who peruses these forums play? As I was looking through the net for LDS Chess I came across an LDS Living article in which a young LDS teen will be training with Garry Kasparov. Now that is something.

    To The Rescue

Ia m half way through To The Rescue, the Biography of President Monson. I "grew up" with President Monson, and heard people talk of him, etc. But, the biography really expands on things I knew nothing or very little about. Wonderful stuff. The two or three chapters on the situation in East Germany in the 60's, 70's and 80's was worth the price of the book alone. Some years ago I spent a lot of time reading church biographies, I think this has got me on that road again. O43
  6. My daughters had their teacher quoting Glenn Beck to them a few weeks back. Nice () I teach Gospel Doctrine on occassion, and so far, I have been able to keep the politics in the corral. Right now we have tea partiers in the neighboring stake causing havoc. (Which is indicitive of them and not all tea partiers in general...) Possibly one of the most irresponsible things I have ever heard in church was a Bishop's counselor telling the Priesthood in opening exercises that no Democrat should be allowed to have a temple recommend. Apparently it is a good thing we have a private ballot.
  7. Not far from me lives a man who is in the last days of his life. He's been married for 40 years (I believe, or close to it...). I have spent a lot of time thinking of his wife and what she will do when he is gone. She did a lot with him and they depended on each other for a lot. So, I can empathize with what you have posted in "being alone." I think we all have to face "alone" eventually, either through the loss of loved ones or facing down our own mortality, or becoming "free." after 40 years of marriage. I wish you the best.
  8. I wear them over my head during daylight robbies.
  9. No, you can't lose your resommend for not supporting 8. Some years ago, previous to 8, there was another voter innitiative to ban same sex marriages on the California ballot. Someone in our ward asked a friend of mine and I to help cold call people to get them to think about voting "yes" on it. Both of us are confident heterosexuals, but we told the fellow no. There were no consequences suffered at the hands of our bishopric or stake president.
  10. In our building they turned off the buzzers at the end of every hour because it distracted a kid with Autism. People just knowing is the best approach. 99% of all of them would probably think "sure!" And to my wife's relief I would have a reason to stop wearing my Hai Karate aftershave...
  11. Your wife ought to knock you on your duff. First for treating her like poo and then sharing it on the WWW. You should try treating her with some class. Sometimes we only get lucky once in life..
  12. The Breville Juicer: Did you watch Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead by chance? Great documentary.

    The Way

I watched Emilio Esteves' The Way Sunday evening. I have to be quite frank and admit it was a beautiful movie. Martin Sheen was fantastic as the caustic father who loses his son, the other characters were believeable and it was quite moving. The scene where Sheen and actress Deborah Kara Unger finally discover why each of them is on the trek is worth the movie itself. The classic part is when the Gypsie father tells Martin Sheen (after the Gypsie's son steals Martin Sheen's backpack) "Our children are the best of us, and the worst of us..." was great. I give this two thumbs up, and there is only one of me.

    Biesbol

My parents started me on about a 20 year run with baseball in Oakland. That may be why Moneyball struck a chord. (Not sure about the veracity of the accuracy, but enjoyed it...) I saw Catfish Hunter Day in Oakland with my grandpa, saw Lius Tiant pitch, George Brett and Reggie Jackson hit, and McGwire and Canseco as rookies. (Who would have known then???) I watched a guy who looked like an extra for the Sapranos put down two triple cheese burgers. So, the Okalnd Colesium has a lot of memories for me.
  15. I would have woken up and had a sandwich...
  16. MI-5 is available on Netflix. Truly one of the great series ever filmed.
  17. The X-Files, one of the greatest series ever. Also Magnum PI is available on Netflix.
  18. Bourdain (The Lay Over and No Reservations) is a hoot. He's crass, a dork, and at the same time very human, it is some of (in my opinion) the best TV on TV. I like The Walking Dead, The Mentalist, Saturday morning English soccer on ESPN, The World Poker Tour on Root Sports, Finding Bigfoot on APL is the best comedy on TV, Hawaii Five-0 is not as good as the original but has action, and the Cubs on WGN on summer afternoons. Movies: the latest I thought were good have been Moneyball, Larry Crowne, and Johnny English Returns (or Reborn). I would mention The Descendants but that is rated R and I know I would never watch that. :)
  19. I wasn't quite sure where to put this, but since it did come up this afternoon in conference I thought here might be good. As presented in this afternoon's session, briefly, more women are having children singlely. "Out of wedlock", or whatever phrase we can use. This last few months I read "Boys Adrift" by Sax. He discusses this topic (women having children out of wedlock). And though we see it as a moral issue, Sax's reseach shows that many women can't find "a man" who they believe is mature enough to either marry or see rasing their child. So, they dcide to have a child and raise him/her as a single parent. The onus of this dilemna seems to be men (of which gender I am included) to hang up the video game remote, turn off the p-o-r-n (I thought Larry Crowne had a good example of this), take their 20's, 30's and 40's seriously, and be responsible. I understand this is a brief and not very eloquent post, and this issue does remain a moral issue for many of us, but there seems to be a deeper seeded problem to it than women "just getting pregnant." For many this is a hard and long thought out process.

    Biesbol

Although Oakland and Seattle opened the season last week in Tokyo, the baseball season for 2012 gets underway in ernest this comming week. What a wonderful time of year: Conference, baseball and the Masters. (And let's not forget Easter!) I live in the Rockies' Television market so they are my adopted team, but I have always had a love affair with Oakland. And yes Moneyball should have won the Oscar.
  22. I live in, and love the high desert. But, if I could afford it, I would be habitating the tropics. Particularly the Caribbean.
  23. BYU footbal is "fun". They win big, and lose big. They truly don't recruit the "atheltic type" that the Southern California, Texas and Florida schools get. I do think that although a "Automatic Bid" division, there aren't teams in the ACC that are much better than BYU, if any on a regular basis. (Or better than Boise State for that matter.) It's supposed to be entertainment, we've turned it into life or death.
