  1. I'm looking for book recommendations by general authorities of the church. If any can think of some that have been recommended, they can be on a gospel topic, but not limited to, I'm looking more for books of a secular nature, (I know the Book of Mormon has been recommended hehe) Thanks :)
  2. dude thats pretty impressive. you've made some very large changes in your life and should be commended for your dedication to the Lord.

I think thats pretty cool, there's often not a lot of people who really understand others, when it comes to religious belief, people make a lot of mistakes in thinking begin to stereotype others when they'd normally not (one would hope) make those mistakes about other areas of their lives. People think a lot of things about the LDS church and its members which are untrue. I'm sure some LDS do about people of other faiths. My opinion? I attribute much of this to a weakness of faith, both in our own belief, and in ourselves. We are afraid that if we attempt to understand what another person is saying it will threaten the beliefs we hold dear. Why? We are unsure of the strength of our own faith. It is possible I think, to be able to examine the beliefs of others with courage, and come away with no harm to your own belief, save a richer perspective. However to understand another point of view should not necessarily mean to sympathize or agree. There is obviously a limit on this sort of thing, you ought to keep the main thing the main thing, and stay away from sin. Did anyone else get the antidepressant advertisements? They started popping up after I put in my belief about how to attain salvation

  7. which distro did you use?
  8. I'm waiting for you to write your book of wisdom, MissHalfway. You've got some great insights. I think you should give it a funny title. "Its Halfway or the Highway!" OK I'm kidding! But I would like to read your book. I agree fully. There are loads of things my dad doesn't know about me, and he has been the single most awesome father I think a boy could have. He is a great example of love and concern for his family, shown by his kindness and tenderness. He is one of those genius types that, though he did not pursue a higher education, ideas pop out of his head like crazy. He loves to talk about them, and although he sometimes has trouble expressing himself on a deeper level, he does let me know he loves me verbally sometimes. It may sound odd, but I know that when he's telling me his theories on aerodynamics or hydrogen engines, he's showing his love for me. I know my dad very well, and I know thats how he expresses his love. He is a wonderful man who probably never did know my shoe size. I'm sure all of you here are familiar with the movie "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," and its modern successor. Roald Dahl was a wonderful author. He wrote one that is somewhat lesser known, entitled "Danny, the Champion of the World." Having read it from the age of perhaps 12, it remains to this day one of my all time favorite books. I highly recommend it, if you want the story of a very good man (who happened to be a poacher) and his son, Danny.
  9. here's how i explained it to a friend. giovanna says: all men are crazy Mike says: no Mike says: not all Mike says: many women mistake nice guys Mike says: to be fearful giovanna says: ok giovanna says: thats is sure Mike says: and they are attracted to "jerks" Mike says: mean men Mike says: so they think all men are bad Mike says: when they ignore nice men for dating giovanna says: jerk? Mike says: mean person Mike says: in america there is a saying Mike says: "nice guys and jerks" Mike says: nice guys finish last Mike says: and jerks get the dates Mike says: because women are attracted to men with powerful personalities Mike says: and they mistake "jerks" for "powerful personalities" Mike says: then when they date the man who really is a jerk Mike says: they think all men are bad Mike says: and they continue to ignore the nice men For those of you who think this is an unfair assumption, let me tell you I cannot count the number of women who mistake geniunely nice men for spineless losers, and pass them by. Author JK Rowling was married to a "nice guy" not too long ago, and says she wishes she had looked for a "nice guy" to begin with, and she encourages other women to do the same. There is a whole lot of overgeneralization going on both sides, and I think it pretty much all points to a lack of understanding. here is my opinion: Mike says: you need to find a good man, not a beast Mike says: people are people Mike says: for men, its often the same Mike says: some women do not take responsibility for their actions and emotions Mike says: but this is some women, not all Mike says: and i cannot write off all women because some women are like that Mike says: there are many bad things about both women and men Mike says: neither one are innocent I think its heartily unfair for either sex to bash each other on a general basis, although a lot of this is tied up in emotional reasoning, when we're hurt, we tend to do that sort of thing. I think educating ourselves properly about the opposite sex helps a lot with that. Edit:Conversation taken from an MSN dialogue.
  10. Generally its a date when its mutually considered to be a date. :) Edit: In the case of adults anyways. In the case of teens, its a date when the parent says "It darn well IS a date, now go to your room and think about it."
  11. Definitely true. They're very nice for home use, for servers or firewalls, definitely straight BSD for me. (or linux)
  12. Much of Mac OS X is Unix as well. Architecture of Mac OS X - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  13. I use Windows Xp/Ubuntu Linux/OpenBSD and an ipcop or pfsense firewall, depending on my mood. IPCop works better with Snort IDS for some reason. I don't get good results using it with PfSense. Someday down the road, I think it would be extremely cool to learn to create a nice openbsd firewall. I'm a huge fan of that OS. these guys are fans of open source and linux. 14. You know that "challenge" would be trivially easy for me. I hate television. I will rarely if ever watch it. I watch everything I want to see from TV online, at my convenience. I'm like Checkerboy with that. It better to do that, anyways, I think. When it comes to series that are sequential in nature, its easier that way to follow the story. And I avoid all of the lame commercials that come with television.
  15. someone got my joke! yayy
  16. glad you're here we need more humble people.
  17. Welcome, Jacek! I love you too!
  18. i served in their ward in Indianapolis, in my first area. I hope he heals.
  19. ok I'm gonna buy it! I like yummy warm blankets!
  20. I haven't seen the others, I'll check them out. But I loved Batman Begins. I'm a big fan of the director, Christopher Nolan.
  21. Does Kolob count? Cause I would like to hie there in the twinkling of an eye.
  22. I loove Casablanca. When I first saw that film I was impressed by how many lines had made their way into our speech.
  23. I watched the Bourne movies (all three) just recently, and I was thoroughly impressed with the story. I really got into it, I loved the intricacies of the plot and the Jason Bourne character. I'm always very impressed with a movie that showcases the excellence and dedication of the character who does well with his given skill. (In the case of action flicks, kicking some tail.) Its inspiring. I'll most likely buy the books and read those too. I was looking for another fun action movie, and I came across the movie Paycheck. I watched it, and was unimpressed. I dislike movies that are seemingly written by movie industry executives attempting to appeal to a mass market. Even the lesson it tried to add (knowing the future would destroy the future) seemed artificial and contrived. I suppose if I myself had somehow looked into the future from 30 years ago and saw the movie, i might be impressed with all of the cool sets, special effects, etc. But I'm jaded and spoiled, special effects have ceased to impress me, what I'm really drawn to is depth of characters and a really good story, especially if it inspires me. I don't totally hate commercialism in movies. I just don't like watching things with little substance. I thought I'd start a thread here asking what movies others have enjoyed. What are your favorites? What movies do you think are great? (Even praiseworthy, virtuous, lovely, and of good report... I'll seek after it!) PS. My favorite movie is The Goonies! Another one I love is La Vita é Bella
  24. David Burns, psychologist who helped popularize cognitive therapy in his book "Feeling Good" says that anxiety comes from the idea that you "have to", or "should do" something. When you feel others "have to" or "should do" something, it leads to anger. I've found this concept very useful in managing my own moods. Prayer definitely helps too.
  25. thats cool. I've used a few distro's, right now I'm trying Unix with OpenBSD. I installed it first in VMWare, it worked really well. Next up is to try out on the hard drive itself. However it lacks a lot of fun features Linux has, so I'm going to triple boot, Windows XP, Linux and Unix. I really like the security advantage of OpenBSD.
