I read the books and loved them. I was a little disappointed in the movie. Don't get me wrong, I still really liked it. I thought that the movie was very true to the book, and I know they packed as much into two hours as possible, but it just seemed like a lot of stuff was missing. Everyone that I have talked too absolutely LOVED the casting, especially Edward. I think Alice, Esme, Jacob, Billy Black, James, Laurent, and Victoria were spot on. Bella, Jasper, and Emmett were okay but I was really disappointed in Edward, Rosalie and Carlisle. (Was it just me or could Carlisle and Data from Star Trek be brothers?) I think that Edward was just so built up in my mind after reading about his "drop dead" looks for four novels that anyone cast in the role was bound to be a disappointment. I am certainly excited that New Moon is in the works and look forward to seeing Jacob Black's character take a larger roll. (Hmmmm....Would you believe that I ALMOST like Jacob better than Edward?) Anyway, that is my two cents! :-)

Request for information on the doctrine of "unclean races"
Vanilla replied to jamesnz1982's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
I stand corrected. It does not say "Official" site anywhere on the home page. FYI- The Genesis Group was established to meet the needs of Black members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, many of whom were descendants of early pioneers, with the hope of reactivating those who had left the Church and of supporting new converts of African descent. It was established in 1971 under the direction of President Joseph Fielding Smith with the assistance of Elders Gordon B. Hinckley, Thomas S. Monson, and Boyd K. Packer. The current General Authority who oversees Genesis is Seventy President Ronald A. Rasband. -

Hi James- I have to admit that your post caught my eye because of the author of the thesis in question, Roel van Leeuwen is someone that I have had the pleasure of discussing religion with many times in the past, although this particular issue was never discussed. I had never heard that the church excluded the priesthood from "brown skinned men" (Polynesians and Maori) so I did a search and came up with the following two articles. The first is a great article in an LDS publication written specifically for the teenage youth of the Church called the New Era. This particular article was written in 1981 and goes into great detail about the Maori people and the Church. http://www.lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=024644f8f206c010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD&locale=0&sourceId=a3e7ba9ff599b010VgnVCM1000004d82620a____&hideNav=1 The second is from another LDS publication, The Ensign, (written for the adult members). http://www.lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=2354fccf2b7db010VgnVCM1000004d82620aRCRD&locale=0&sourceId=5aa627cd3f37b010VgnVCM1000004d82620a____&hideNav=1 I am also including a couple of other websites, two of which are dedicated to the black members of the Church. There is a website for Black Latter-Day Saint members and it can be found here: http://www.ldsgenesisgroup.org/ This is a website dedicated to black members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (It is an un-official website) http://www.blacklds.org/ This is the Official website for the LDS Church: http://www.lds.org I hope these articles can shed some light on your question. :) Vanilla -

One of my co-workers heard this song and wondered if it might have been what you were looking for.... I'm not sure if it is the one, but here it is. Heads up, the lyrics are not ones that I can post here.

One of my all time favorite toys was actually on our school playground, and called "the Giant Strikes". It was a long round metal pipe that was secured in concrete, stood strait up probably about 15 ft high or so... It had a round gear at the top that turned with chains that hung down and bars on the end where you would hang on. Everyone would run in a circle until you would fly off of the ground. I searched the internet and found a picture of it and this is what it said under the picture: The most dangerous playground device ever invented. This was known as the "giant strikes" by most kids. It is pictured here before its removal. Even before it was removed students were eventually barred from playing with it. The large chains and handle bars on the ends would swing around and pop you in the face once someone let go or fell off. It caused more bloody noses than most alumni can count. I never had a bloody nose from getting hit in the head with a bar and actually only let go in mid-flight once which resulted in losing a lot of skin off of my knees and elbows! It was a lesson well learned and I held on for dear life after that!

Welcome to the site. Darn those parents for knowing what they were talking about! :-) Everyone here comes from different paths, but there are some of us that understand the paths that you have taken, and can testify that while it really isn't easy, it is certainly worth it!
