Only needing Christ for salvation
BenRaines replied to northern_dad's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
We believe that Christ was necessary to be saved from death. His resurrection saved us from eternal death. Christ is also needed to save us from spiritual death, separation from our Heavenly Father. Accepting Christ and his instruction to be baptized for remission of sins and to accept him as our Savior is another of our beliefs. Unless a man be born of the water and of the spirit he can not enter the Kingdom of God. Ben Raines -
Polygamy is affecting my testimony

Since this thread is off track and people can not seem to get back on track I am closing this one. You can find other threads regarding Blacks and the Priesthood ban. Ben Raines -

Polygamy is affecting my testimony
BenRaines replied to annamaureen's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Folks there is another thread that you can use for this discussion. No need to hijack this one. This was about Polygamy not Blacks and the Priesthood. Ben Raines -
I find this thread enjoyable and will look for the book earlier mentioned. I have enjoyed reading Between the Testaments by Richard Holzaphal. It covers life during the 500 years from the end of the Old Testament writings to the beginning of New Testament writings. 500 years without any writings is a very long time. Ben Raines

OK people. Tone it down and stop the personal attacks. They are unnecessary. Stick to the topic at hand. Ben Raines

I know lots of LDS doctors, police officers, nurses, firemen, etc that work on Sunday and I am glad that they do. What was that reference to mote in their eye and beam in your eye? I worry about my Sabbath day observance and not about others. Ben Raines

Any Good or Bad Experiences With Police Officers?
BenRaines replied to Carl62's topic in General Discussion
Having been a police officer I will in the next few days share with you some of my experiences. Gwen, as for your situation the reason the officer stops out of your vision is to observe the area. Officers are trained to not walk to the front of the window but to keep the door post between themselves and driver. This prevents it from being easy for officer to be assaulted by door or even worse to easily be shot. Imagine that every vehicle that you stop has someone in it that does not want to be stopped, has a reason to do you harm so that they can get away and you are going to walk up to their door. How would you approach that car? More to follow. Ben Raines -
I agree. Blessings are asked for by the person needing or as Pam has stated for an immediate family members request due to inability. A baby can't ask but person responsible for baby can. Ben Raines

When did the ban on Blacks holding the Priesthood start
BenRaines replied to Avrham's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Thanks Snow :) Ben Raines -
We homeschooled our last two for high school. We were living outside the US and were not happy with the available schools and needed to prepare them for college. One was admitted to Utah State and the other BYU as starting freshmen. Home schooling allows for a better education if you are prepared to be a teacher. If you are disciplined. Our kids would do a days work in a couple of hours. No wasted time with kids that use up teacher's time in non productive activities. Ben Raines

When did the ban on Blacks holding the Priesthood start
BenRaines replied to Avrham's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Was there a ban? I thought the instructions were that Priesthood was not to be given to those who were of a certain blood line. They were baptized. Held callings that did not require Priesthood. Would you say that women are banned from the Priesthood? Ben Raines -
US citizenship is not a requirement to be President of LDS church. Maybe not even President of US. :) Ben Raines PS: I couldn't resist. Sorry for derailing the thread.

We prepare for disasters, unemployment, illness and general state of well being knowing that if some disaster happens we are prepared to sustain ourselves with the food we have stored. I am always reminded of the story of the Ant and the Grasshopper. I think they even made a movie of it in "It's a Bug's life". Ant was very industrious and worked and saved while the grasshopper ate and played. Today there are those who eat and play, big houses beyond their needs, fancy cars and boats, extreme vacations, etc. Perhaps some have their food storage. I know that there are many who do not. They are focused on the living of today and no care for tomorrow. The last 18 months has made a few more care for tomorrow. I store because I have been counseled to and because I know that this is one way to "Be Prepared". I have always liked Scouting. :) Ben Raines

Pam, in the past you need to make the donation to the specific ward where that missionary is serving from. Donation slip mailed to that Bishop or Branch President. It is not possible, that I am aware, to make the donation in your ward for another ward's missionary credit. It appears that the soon to be missionary in this discussion is in France.. Hence euros. It may be possible to get that until number and make a local donation to that ward or branch credit but I do not know. Question for your Bishop or Palerider. Ben Raines

Easiest thing would be to go to your Bishop and explain the situation. He will go to Stake President and get permission for you to attend another ward in the stake or another stake. If they person you are worried about logs in to the Stake Website they are able to see you church record as far as address. Perhaps you can request it not be displayed. I would suggest another stake if one close enough. No clerk or member of Bishopric should give out your address or phone number. Best thing is to make Bishop aware of problem and then he makes sure no one gives it out. Ben Raines

As an aside. If you know the person who the restraining order is against is somewhere you can't just go there so that they have to leave. As I recall the order is that they can't approach where you are but you can't use an RO to chase someone away. Ben Raines

I have been LDS for almost 40 years. I have not seen one piece of literature that the LDS church produces that says any other church and it's members are going to hell. As a missionary when we talked with someone and they expressed no interest in LDS faith or hearing about it we encouraged them to attend the church of their choice. Our responsibility is not to judge anyone but to be Christlike. Ben Raines

My name is Victoria, and I'm a prospective convert.
BenRaines replied to vmackenzie's topic in Introduce Yourself
My wife grew up Catholic, attended Catholic high school. Had the questions, Where did I come from, why am I here, where will I go after this life. The nuns and the priests could not answer her questions. At 15 the LDS missionaries came by her house. These young men were able to answer her questions and encouraged her to pray about it. She has been LDS for almost 40 years. Ben Raines
