One spouse goes to Celestial, the other does not
captmoroniRM replied to Javajot's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Marriage is a covenant between spouses and the Lord. The blessings of the sealing ordinance, and the ability to stay together for all eternity are dependent upon the faithfulness of both partners. Each will inherit the glory with which they are judged worthy of by the Lord, and should one be found worthy of a lesser glory, the sealing will not be valid because the covenant made between the Lord and the couple was broken. As for your other question, the Lord has promised that nobody will be denied blessings they are worthy of, but didn't have a chance to receive in this life. How exactly that will be reconciled has not yet been revealed. The Lord knows what is best and in his perfect wisdom will sort all that out eventually. -

Happens all the time. I know on youth temple trips to the DC temple, some of the adults would do an endowment session while others helped with the baptisms.

The Holy Ghost can visit those who aren't baptized or confirmed. There are numerous accounts of people having dreams, visions, or some kind of spiritual manifestation that comes before they have even heard of the Church. When we receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost, we gain the right to have him as a constant companion inasmuch as we remain worthy. It is a more continual thing than the visitations or manifestations before being baptized.

Now that's just 'pun'ishment.

The Biblical Basis for the Great Apostasy
captmoroniRM replied to Jason_J's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Timeline of the Great Apostasy Here's an article on the Apostasy that includes different Biblical references as well as a lot of good historical evidence showing how things played out. -
Like livy111us said, Joseph Smith was a translator. His job was to take the ideas and concepts and expressed in one language, and assign them the right words in English so that people would understand them. Even though the plates more than likely didn't specifically say "Jesus Christ" Joseph would have understood who was being spoken of in "reformed egyptian" to be the Savior. He knew the Savior was Jesus Christ. So thats what he wrote.

The Pending Doom of Obamacare
captmoroniRM replied to Saintmichaeldefendthem1's topic in Current Events
I like how the judge cited Pres. Obama in a 2008 campaign speech as part of his justification for striking it down. Something that had to do with Obama saying there are other solutions besides federally mandated health care. -
For What Do You Pray? The Great Tire Debate
captmoroniRM replied to theoriginalavatar's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Referring to the healing of the sick, Elder Oaks recently said the following: The same principle applies here. Have we tried to replace the tire? Have we done everything in our power to fill it with air, seal the leak? Faith is a principle of action. The Lord said faith can move mountains, but sometimes he requires us to take a shovel and start digging for it to move. Recently, I had to go through an exit inspection for military housing in Biloxi, MS. My wife and I were up late cleaning the day before. Desperate to get rid of some bionic soap scum on our bathroom fixtures, my wife tried everything including The Works Toilet bowl cleaner. The Works at first, seemed to work wonderfully, so my wife quickly did all the fixtures before she realized the chemicals in the cleaner, were staining and tarnishing the chrome fixtures. Here we were, 10pm, a few hours away form our exit inspection and all the fixtures seemed ruined. We both said a lot of prayers that night for the Lord to help us fix the problem. The Lord could have easily restored the chrome fixtures in the blink of an eye just as he changed Moses' hand into a leprous state and back in a matter of moments. Instead, the Lord's solution was 2 late-night runs to Walmart in search of cleaners and polishes, and hours of scrubbing and polishing them. Rather than simply "fill our tire, the Lord guided us to products that worked and, in the end, we restored them sufficiently to pass the exit inspection. Another example is 2 Kings 5 (The story of Naaman). -
What if someone taught the gospel this way:
captmoroniRM replied to LDSChristian's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Um...not exactly the same scenario, but try looking for the video "How Rare A Possession" which tells of a minister from Italy who finds the Book of Mormon in a burn barrel with no cover, no title. He cleans it up, reads it, not knowing what it is, and even starts including it in his sermons, because he knows it is true. While this makes his congregation grow, the religious authorities above him, kick him out unless he burned the book. The same would happen if one followed the scenario you outlined. Someone would catch on, and you'd get "fired" from preaching. And honestly, what would be the point of going through all that trouble to get certified in the eyes of the world to preach the gospel. Priesthood holders in the Church have more authority than the Pope. Rather than having to sneak into other churches to preach their members, why not just serve a mission (if your of age) and teach them. Or as regular members, invite them to church, or let them hear the missionary discussions. -
King-men and Free-men, Is LDS anti-monarchy?
captmoroniRM replied to lines's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Props to Vanhin for quoting Mosiah. I would also refer you to Doctrine and Covenants 134. Here, the Lord reveals his thoughts on Government. -
I'm gonna say DC. The massive size of the building is awe inducing.

Yup. Look at the cross reference for weak. "But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;" (1 Cor 1:27). Consider the restoration of the Gospel. It was not done through some religoius scholar with degrees in theology, or some big-name pastor. A humble farmboy with a thirst for truth continues to confound many of the greatest minds in the world. I've heard eloquent and educated discourses on the gospel that lacked the power of a humble testimony given by a man who could barely read, and yet loved the Book of Mormon and knew of its truth.

Here's an article from "The Society for the Prevention of Anti-Mormonism" on Polygamy. It delves a little into the history of it in the Old Testament, as well as how it played out in the early days of the LDS Church. Hope it helps. Do Mormon's Practice Polygamy As for the Adam\God quote: The Truth about the so-called Adam\God Doctrine

It wasn't a movie adaptation, but Legend of the Seeker had to be one of the worst adaptations of a book series (The Sword of Truth books by Terry Goodkind) I've ever seen. It followed the book for about 2 episodes (with minor deviations as normally expected). Episode 3 takes you into left field. Episode 4, over the stadium walls and into the river.... Regardless, I still think it is a fun show...one that I need to get back into watching, but from an adaptation standpoint, horrendous job.

That Mormon Guy Glenn Beck

Here's some interesting thoughts on Glenn Beck. Glenn Beck: A Terrestrial Prophet -
While singles wards are often a "meat market" they are also a great environment to give young single adults opportunities to serve in leadership positions, such as an EQ or RS president. You get young guys serving as ward clerks and getting an opportunity to teach. It was pretty cool experience to be a simple EQ Secretary and get to help and watch as the Pres and his counselors sought the Lord's help in assigning home teaching routes. Also, you'd be surprised at how little "dating" actually occurs within a singles ward. (Or maybe just the ones I went to). I was talking to my EQ president a week or so before I got married about how I felt kinda bad for having only been in the ward 6 months and met the woman of my dreams, while there had been people there for years who still hadn't even gotten engaged. He told me not to feel bad because I actually asked girls on dates. There were times where the EQ pres stood in front of the EQ and reminded the brethren that the sisters needed to be taken out on dates and it was our job to do it.

1. If I moved to SLC or a LDS neighourhood, would I be shunned? Or treated as you would any other LDS or non LDS? Depends on how truly Christ-like those around you are. Yes, appearances can and usually do lead to certain impressions of a person, but to first impressions aren't always true anyways. 2. If I was to attend a meet or two (if anything to become more culturally knowledgable), would I be accepted or turned away? Anyone is welcome to visit Church meetings. You may come across some judgmental people who might be overly focused on your appearance, but it depends on how Christ-like the people are around you. 3. What are LDS views on Tattoos and Piercings? I may have been mis-informed. We are encouraged to avoid Tattoos and any piercings other than one in each ear. For guys, they are encouraged to have no piercings.

captmoroniRM replied to Saintmichaeldefendthem1's topic in General Discussion
Not necessarily. Skousen's works are pretty well known outside the LDS community. My dad said they cited a lot of his books like "The Naked Communist" and "The Naked Capitalist" as part of the training course for Air Force Intel. There is definitely truth in them. -
You've pretty much stated your problem in the response, emilyann. You keep saying "I've tried," over and over again. That and your wanting to delay repentance show that, in your heart, you don't want to give up whatever it is that is keeping you from actually overcoming it. Until you want to be rid of it, you won't. And I don't mean the kind of "wanting to be rid of it" that comes as because of our shame and guilt of what we've done. But the kind of wanting because it is separating you from the presence of your Heavenly Father, the kind of wanting to be rid of it because you know it offends your Heavenly Father. That kind of "wanting" makes a person willing to do whatever it takes, regardless of how much may hurt, or how hard it will be. Though you may not be there yet, going to Church, reading your Scriptures, and praying are powerful tools to help get you there. They will help bring the Spirit more fully into your life and help awaken you to the understanding that sin offends God, and the consequences of our sins. You may not feel comfortable going in the beginning, like your a fish out of water. As you go and immerse yourself in the teachings of Christ, you'll learn that the real fish out of water is your pet sin. You'll realize that it doesn't belong in your life and more fully want to be rid of it, so you can finally be at peace with your Heavenly Father. It'll help you realize that only the Atonement of Christ can help you get rid of it, that you'll need His help.

One can definitely compare those times to ours. Our country was founded by God-fearing men. The country thrived as the promise given to the peoples of the Book of Mormon were fulfilled that if we should obey the commandments, we would prosper in the land. Now, we are getting to the point where the more part are choosing wickedness and rejecting the commandments of God. Mosiah warns when that happens, we'd be ripe for destruction.

So if you want to live it in the future, and will live it in the future, why not do it now? Do you just want to "eat, drink, and be merry" now and plan on repenting later? You'd save yourself a world of pain and struggle down the road if you started living now. So yes, you can still go to Church, read your scriptures, and Pray . In fact, you probably should. Ask God if you should be doing those things. He'd be able to answer that much more effectively than anyone here on this forum.

Wizards First rule: People are stupid. In the Church you aren't going to find the best of the best. Christ came not to call upon the righteous, but to call the sinners to repentance. Yes there are good people, but everyone of us is an imperfect person who does stupid things.
