  1. Basically what everyone else has already said: First Resurrection began with Christ and will continue throughout the Millennium. Second is when the wicked will be resurrected.
  2. Best Joke Ever: Q: What is the difference between roast beef and pea soup? A: Anybody can roast beef.....
  3. The most irritating thing about Chic-Fil-A being in the news is that Hawaii doesn't have any so I can't get their delicious spicy chicken sandwhich and some waffle fries!
  4. The 11th Commandment is actually: Thou shalt watch Doctor Who. There was just a crazy encouter with the Doctor that caused it to be lost from the stone tablets.
  5. I think a perfect example of how God can answers prayers without violating our agency lies in the conversion of Alma the Younger. Here you had the rebellious son of a righteous man who had prayed and fasted mightily for his son to repent and become converted to the ways of Christ. When the time was right, Heavenly Father sent an angel to answer Alma the Elder's prayers. Note the words of the angel: "Behold, the Lord hath heard the prayers of his people, and also the prayers of his servant, Alma, who is thy father; for he has prayed with much faith concerning thee that thou mightest be brought to the knowledge of the truth; therefore, for this purpose have I come to convince thee of the power and authority of God, that the prayers of his servants might be answered according to their faith. And now behold, can ye dispute the power of God? For behold, doth not my voice shake the earth? And can ye not also behold me before you? And I am sent from God. Now I say unto thee: Go, and remember the captivity of thy fathers in the land of Helam, and in the land of Nephi; and remember how great things he has done for them; for they were in bondage, and he has delivered them. And now I say unto thee, Alma, go thy way, and seek to destroy the church no more, that their prayers may be answered, and this even if thou wilt of thyself be cast off." The angel tells Alma the Younger that A: Alma's father has been praying for him. B: He's come to answer his fathers prayer and "Convince him of the power and authority of God" and C: offers him a choice- Go thy way and persecute me no more, or be destroyed.) The angel, at no point, infringes upon Alma the Younger's free agency. The Lord did hsi part to answer Alma the Elder's prayer. The actual decision to convert and repent remained entirely with Alma the Younger. He could have rejected the message and followed the path towards destruction and technically, Alma the Elder's prayer would have been answered. Luckily, Alma heeded the message and chose to repent of his sins.
  6. A Christ-Centered Faith - LDS Newsroom --Latest from the Church Newsroom in response from all the hubbub.
  7. Try your hand at CLEP/DANTEs exams. They are relatively cheap for non-military (80$ an exam or so) and there are plenty of online study resources for them. I busted out 21 credits in 6 weeks using CLEPs to finish off my associates.
  8. If anything, Christ showed us the Gospel is extremely simple. There's a quote from John taylor, I think, that says real intelligence is the ability to take a subject that is enormous and complex and break it down so simply that even a child can understand it. Christ's teachings are incredibly profound and the symbols and parables in them help make them a fountain of profound truths. At the same time, children can understand them in their beautiful simplicity.
  9. I know the Church has many of its sunday school videos online. In the class I teach, I downloaded the one about Paul going before King Agrippa to my laptop for free. I'm sure if you look you can find others.
  10. D&C 88:118 And as all have not faith, seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith. That is the world of the Lord as to what we should read and study for the answers to spiritual questions. Can we read non-Mormon or anti literature? For information about the LDS church/Mormonism, I'd say the best source of information is to go read books from Mormons. Non-LDS works (Like the "Idiot's guide to world religion" that I bought to study for a CLEP test) had partial and flawed information regarding the The LDS Church. Reading Anti-Mormon literature won't do anything to edify one's testimony of Christ. Most of it is written with the intent to create doubt and confusion. They are written with malicious intent by people who have no intention of teaching truth about the LDS church. One could respond to the anti-mormon and lay out evidences that disprove every argument he is trying to make, and the anti-mormon will ignore it. It is intellectual dishonesty at its finest. As for missionaries, they are limited in what they read because their mission is to invite others to come unto Christ through faith in his name, repentance, baptism, and receiving the Holy Ghost. They teach the very basic principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They need to understand the "milk" of the gospel incredibly well. The missionary library contains approved works that outline these basic principles extremely well. Reading anything else distracts from the basics of that work. Ultimately, one can read whatever they want but to obtain spiritual knowledge, one must ultimately go to the creator of all things. There is a reason the scriptures say "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God." When we ask in faith and real intent to know the truths of God, he answers through the holy ghost and knowledge taught from on high will bring a more profound answer to the greatest spiritual questions one can have.
  11. Yeah, I get what you are saying. I only caught this because I subscribe to the LDS Newsroom on facebook. Things like this pop every now and then.
  12. Saw that the other day. Another good laugh is their remix of a black-eyed peas song called "Everybody Poops."
  13. I've always wanted to do it, and am debating once again to do it this year. My obstacles: I'm constantly switching from Days to Swings to Mid shifts, have a 1 month old kid....and Ace Combat: Assault Horizon comes out tomorrow......
  14. The Church put out an official statement regarding his comments: Church Response to "Not Christian" Statement - LDS Newsroom Blog In response to media calls regarding comments made by a Baptist minister at a political event stating that Mormons are not Christians, the Church issued the following statement today: We really don’t want to comment on a statement made at a political event, but those who want to understand the centrality of Christ to our faith can learn more about us and what we believe by going to mormon.org . Pastor Jeffress expressed his views and while they show a lack of understanding as to the centrality of Christ to the LDS Church, they are his views. Nothing he says can cause the Church any harm. If anything, those who honestly want to know if he is telling the truth about us being a cult or not, will find their way to Mormon.org, in front of missionaries, or asking their Mormon friends about it. Like my dad always says, "you can't kick the Church down the stairs."
  15. I'm a fan of Drudge but you can't trust one news source. Drudge and Fox News are tipped to the right. CNN and MSNBC are tipped to the left. The Blaze is good, but again leans to the right. WorldNet Daily is good, but it is run by the conservative Christian right and they tend to obsess with some issues (like the birth cirtificate, etc). The best place to find the best information\news is across multiple sources. That can help you see the different ways different outlets are spinning it and help you come to a better more informed conclusion than someone who watches only one source.
  16. I also believe that goes for scientific truths as well. Just think of the outpouring of scientific truth that has emerged since the restoration of the Gospel. 1830 was when the steam engine became something practical/portable, kicking off the industrial revolution. We are still reaping the fruits of that today.
  17. It is my experience that the apostasy continues today despite the restoration of the Church. The only difference is now we have prophets and apostles with priesthood keys and authority to essentially "reel us in" so we don't stray from the path. When all the apostles were killed off in the 1st century, there was nobody left to do that. Ere go, the Great Apostasy.
  18. Interesting. Definitely worth watching. Does anyone know if BYU-TV streams any of their shows? My wife and I don't have cable or satellite.
  19. Whatever the spirit tells him to say. Ultimately he will exhibit compassion and try to help you find repentance through Christ's atonement.
  20. Good luck on your mission. Work hard. Trust in the Lord. That's the key to a successful mission, and remember, success doesn't necessarily mean baptisms. And, its okay to be homesick/trunky towards the end, just don't let it stop you from working your butt off.
  21. The Patriarchal Blessing is something sacred that shouldn't be shared outside of family and maybe REALLY close friends. The actual tribe you are in, isn't. Its not a secret or anything. It can be shared.
  22. Putting leaders on a pedestal is like what the Nephites did to Nephi after they split from their Brethren. Jacob says they looked unto Nephi as "a king or a protector, and on whom [they] depend for safety." If you read 2 Nephi 6-10, you'll see Jacob is exhorting them not to look at his brother that way, but to Christ to be their king and protector. This reflects the tone of 1 Cor. 3-4 where Paul is pleading to the saints to worship Christ. Numerous time he says that he is nothing, but through Christ he wise/strong, etc. The definition of putting on a pedestal is to lift someone above us as if they were perfect, more important than others. Yes, putting leaders on pedestals is dangerous, because we assume they are perfect and if they err, or fall in some way, people will either think that error is right, or it'll lead to feelings of betrayal. As for naming buildings after people, that's simply a sign of honor and acknowledgement for things they did in their life. Traditionally, it is done in hope that whatever occurs in that building leads one to try and mimic those laudable actions. If the result is getting people to act like men who lived Christ-like lives devoted to bringing souls back to our Heavenly Father, then more power to them. It would be bad if we treated them like perfect men who never once sinned in their life and deserve to have a building named after them because they are in every way better than us. And Justice, kudos for the Melchezidek example. Are we putting him or Aaron on a pedestal because the priesthoods are named after them? Were they perfect men or better than us in any way? No. Were they good, righteous, God fearing men who magnified their calling? Yes.
  23. when I was a kid and living in AK, a local radio station announced that due to some minor emergency, the space shuttle would be landing at Elmendorf AFB that day (it was supposed to be landing that day and Elmendorf is an alternate landing site.) People flocked to the base or nearby to see the shuttle land only to receive an April Fools.
  24. I prayed and asked Heavenly Father, with faith and real intent, and received an answer that he was.
  25. The scriptures are pretty clear that Christ and Heavenly Father are united in purpose. It is safe to say that if "the Lord God" says or does something, it refers to both of them.
