Science and Religion: Good Bedfellows?
ConnieM replied to theoriginalavatar's topic in General Discussion
Science and Religion... that is always a very interesting topic. I've once found a great quote by Orson Pratt, in the Journal of Discurses Vol 20: Yes, it is a long quotation, but I love it! What do you think about it? -
War Chapters of the BoM- Symbolic of the War in Heaven?
ConnieM replied to JudoMinja's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Thanks Justice. It is highly interesting because if that would be the case... 1. Satan and his followoers who are on this earth are bound to a covenant (not to start a fight against the spirits of heaven) 2. the followers of Satan who did not enter this covenant lost not only their first estate but also their lives? That could mean that many spirits lost their privileges of the spiritual creation and went back to... their state of being before that. I don't know, but it is definitely an interesting topic! :) -
War Chapters of the BoM- Symbolic of the War in Heaven?
ConnieM replied to JudoMinja's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
I've never read these chapters with the thought of parallels like this in mind. Alma 43:9 and 30 give us a reason why the Nephites were fighting, saying they wanted to preserve their rights and privileges and liberty and their church. This is what the decision in Heaven was about. To keep our rights and privileges and liberty, our free-agency. When the Nephites fought against the Lamanites, the Nephites were prepared and had breast plates, armshields and head-plates. So, with a lot of preparation and work they came to the fight, and still breast-plates were pierced and head-plates were smitten in two. Even with a lot of preparation, noone is safe. As we are now, even if we obey and prepare ourselves against the fight, reading scriptures, daily prayer etc, we still might fall. The covenant of peace is very interesting if you think about the pre-existence... every soul who entered this covenant was free to depart into the wilderness, the alternative was dead. What do you think about this in combination with Satan's followers? -

When a mother saw a thunderstorm formung in mid-afternoon, she worried about her seven years old daughter who would be walking the three blocks home from school. Deciding to meet her, the mother saw her walking nonchalantly along stopping to smile whenever lightning flashed. Seeing her mom, the little girl ran to her, explaining happily: “Mommy, all the way home God’s been taking my picture!”

When five year old Johnny was told how Eve was created out of Adam’s ribs, he seemed especially interested. Later in the week his mother noticed him lying down as if he were ill. “Johnny what is the matter?” “I have a pain in my side. I think I’m going to have a wife!”

Thank you LDSgirl :) I think so too, Connie. Nice to meet you!

This is a very interesting topic! I'd like to add some of my thoughts and am waiting for your comments :) 1. D&C 76: 24 It does not say "some of the worlds" so I think Jesus is the creator of all of the worlds that belong to our God and his children. (Maybe I could add in this creation cycle?) Moses 1:35 It does state that many have passed away by His power. His creations didn't happen at once and they are at different levels of developement. Of course many worlds have passed away. Our God is an exalted man. That implies that He too has a Father and He too was once a human being. It is a circle of development and thinking of it it is clear that "Saviors" have been before our Lord Jesus Christ.Well, I think our Father in Heaven has many brothers and sisters who to a certain amount have been also exalted and reign their worlds and create more worlds. Plus, have their "Saviors". By His power makes clear that our Father and Jesus created more worlds together and some of those have been passed away. 2. This earth an evil place?? There needed to be an immense concentration of evil powers to convince the people to crucify our Lord. But that does not make this earth an evil place. It only means that when Jesus was on this earth Satan and His followers saw their chance to act. Satan's only chance to really destroy our Father's plan was to make Jesus fail! He couldn't get Him to do any sin and I'm sure He was really frustrated and angry. It might be that this earth is a special earth. Jesus came to this earth to fulfill the atonement and there must be a reason to it. Could it be that the spirit children of our Father and Mother in Heaven have been divided into "groups" to go to different worlds? Or is there a natural division that makes clear who is going to which world? Does our Father in Heaven have more than one wife? Could the "groups" be "families"? If so, I would say that Jesus Christ is the son of a divine Mother whose children are on this earth and Jesus is one of them. But these are only my personal thoughts and not official church doctrine. Rev 12:9 It also could be that when the spirit children of our Heavenly Parents parted to go to different worlds Satan at the same time send his followers to different places, too. In this case I would ask if satan himself does dwell on this earth? Because that would also explain the concentration of evil forces on this planet.

Mh, well... of course there are always two sides to a story. But I remember a blind woman in our neighbour ward. When I was attending the Young Women's the leader would invite her to join us for some activities. She was around 40 and came teaching us "braille"! The leader would come and take her to our classe and also take her home afterwards. I think that most members are helping friendly. But members are also just human. It is always a difference if someone needs help once or for a while or if someone is in a situation where he or she needs help or sustaining continuously. But also that can work out fine if they find a good solution. If something happens, like an accident, the church members tend to do everything they can to help. In our ward we have an elderly lady who cannot walk. The Elder's Quorum talked about it and made a service plan. They remind each other when it is their turn to get her to sacrament meeting or help her do the shopping of groceries or whatsoever.

Hi everybody, I'm Connie. My family converted when I was two and that makes me raised in the church I guess. I served a mission in Germany and I loved it. I love irony and am myself a little sarcastic sometimes. I love languages and communication. That's why I study English and French literature/linguistics. Well, love to get to know you...

Hi Blue, your book sounds really interesting. I'm sure you can get a lot of ideas and impressions here. I'm new here myself... My parents were baptized when I was 2 years old. :) Missionaries were knocking on their door one spring evening... I grew up in the church then with my siblings. Let me know if I can help you! :)
