oops... I totally read that wrong, folks. I thought it said prison, not position. That's what got me.

Oh, I believe it is inspired, but I don't think that inspiration has come down to the local units very well. Many of the leaders have no interest being in the program. Many of the leaders refuse to do Scouting correctly because it's too much of a hassle. Oh, working with the BSA, I can tell you right now hardly any LDS troops keep their leaders in long enough. We're in the middle of rechartering, and most wards have changed every single leader in their unit from the ones they submitted. A Scoutmaster is in there for a month or so, then is gone. My office is bombarded by the newbies who were never told by anyone in their ward what they were supposed to do. It's the boys who wind up suffering. ... how did that work out? How on earth did he pass the Criminal Background Check? Did the ward actually submit his registration, or is it one of those deals where no application was ever turned in and the BSA has no idea this man is partipating?

I wouldn't wait. And it's not about going on a mission or not. It's about resolving this with you. You don't want to carry this sort of thing around, and bishops can give great advice. Trust me.
-
I would speak to your bishop in your college ward. He could give you some perspective.

These kinds of things are hard... and frankly, as with all addictions, you are always going to be in danger. If you stay clean and you pray, I think that should do it (after all, that is repentance). Has your bishop, if you've spoken to him, said anything about it?

I think i'm doomed... or at least im very afraid
Backroads replied to lostldsman's topic in Advice Board
Dropping it, letting go, and living a righteous life and certainly extremely important parts to repentance. In fact, I think that is the summing up of repentance. However, without confession, you are going to find it extremely difficult to do those things. -
That's a horrible thing to say. Did he say he wasn't watching her? Did he say he was letting God worry about her instead of being a responsible parent? I highly highly doubt it. ACCIDENTS HAPPEN. The man was simply expressing faith in God. I can't believe you would be so cold-hearted as to criticize what you know nothing about and make a joke out of a tragedy.

It's all good. I have worked in Scouting for the past six years. And it really bugs me when troops show up refusing to wear proper uniform, or rich people complain about how much uniforms cost, etc. While the kids in non-LDS troops go out of their way to make themselves look good and respectable.

I don't think it's necessarily harsh. It was a personal example, but he didn't want to be gushy, he wanted to deliver a speech. I'd be careful about making assumptions about anyone's intentions. You don't know what he was thinking.

2nd Graders Having Sex In Class?
Backroads replied to Saintmichaeldefendthem1's topic in Current Events
As a person who has taught 1st grade, I'm frowning more at the teacher. What was happening that allowed the situation to get as far as it did? -
It's a part of public speaking and human nature. I can tell about horrible things in the past with a very casual attitude. It's no longer affecting me. Also, no one really wants to see unintelligible displays of tears from a speaker. It's distracting and can make people even feel cold.

Very much! Bayden-Powell said the Star was a fine thing to reach, but suddenly that's no longer good enough. The best of the best, the Eagle, is now the mediocre. Technically, the Church does not require Scouting to intertwine with Young Men's, but the Church does like Scouting so it's pretty much the exception that does not do Scouting. The church also encourages units to register their serving missionaries as Venturers--which to me is odd. Sure, you can earn a religious award for serving a mission, but that shouldn't be the focus. In my area, too many church units don't want to fully participate in Scouting. They're always looking for loopholes. Scouting uniform is a joke.

Just trying to get some opinions without really ranting: What do y'all think of the Church's use of Boy Scouts as its youth program? Part of me loves that immediate connection with the Boy Scouts, but I also think participation might be more genuine if it were optional.

So I have to ask: How are you all feeling today? Especially you and your son? Still shaken up?
-
Oh, I agree with this. I'm thinking of those individuals, not saintish and his wife. changed suggests the people involved feel guilty over this, which they possibly do. For their own benefit, pretending it didn't happen does not help their situation.
-
Definitely a worthy goal, and it depends on when you want to do it. If you want the marriage to be in the temple, you will have to make some lifestyle changes prior to that. If you want to be sealed there, well, I do like the idea of getting married now.

What if you won millions of dollars in a lottery?
Backroads replied to bcguy's topic in General Discussion
I would be most obliged. -
Seems like Rosabella answered it. However, I still have some questions... Yet earlier we were discussing that all those who die without knowledge of the gospel will go to spirit prison in order to learn the gospel, while this seems to suggest those who would have accepted automatically receive Celestial Glory. So do these individuals "skip" spirit prison? Or is the Celestial Kingdom simply the end result for these people as known by God and they still go through the learning process of spirit prison? I also had a nice little epiphany on the nature of spirit prison. The link Pam posted the other day said that Christ did not visit spirit prison, which could almost be bothersome until you realize that we on earth also don't have the benefit of Christ walking around among us.

Oh my. I'm a lifeguard and the idea of drowning just terrifies me. I'm so glad it ended as it did.

What if you won millions of dollars in a lottery?
Backroads replied to bcguy's topic in General Discussion
Tis true that many lottery winners blow it. If I were the woman, I'd divorce the loser and slap one heck of a restraining order on him. If I won...I wouldn't tell anyone, including family. I would just fill up their bank accounts, pay off their mortgages, then quietly move to Bear Lake County because that is what I've always said I would do if I hd tons of money. -
Okay, first I am just going to begin with... wow. This situation is totally miserable, and I'm torn between changed and mute's advice, probably learning more towards mute's. To begin with, I believe that forgiveness has very little to do with the person or persons who wronged you. We were commanded to forgive and forget because it really does make things a lot easier on us, more so than being commanded to feel injured and horrible about every little thing that happens to us (not to say this is a small thing by anything stretch of the imagination.) However, you are having trouble on the path to forgiveness, and that's not entirely you're fault. My biggest concern is that you are loosing your testimonies over this. Now obviously you can't base your testimony on the people of the church because that won't get you nowhere, but in a case like this the people involved really aren't making things easier for you and your wife. I do not agree at all with how this situation was handled, and I also have to frown upon losing your testimony of the non-people related gospel over it. I would go to your bishop, explain the entire situation INCLUDING how it is affecting your testimony. Frankly, these people for their own benefit need to apologize. I don't care if they're feeling bad. If they feel bad, they should apologize.

Yikes I had so many issues with that movie. It made everything pretty, made the characters even worse than they were in the books, and polished everything up as to destroy anything controversial about it. I was sorely disappointed with that adaption as I LOVE His Dark Materials. At least the story. I always felt the characters were terrible. I think I support this statement.

So is it possible that someone could go to Spirit Prison and still wind up in the Celestial Kingdom?
-
The book series was actually brilliant--then again, I have a thing for British kiddie lit. But the movie put in some weird monkey girl... Yes.... those actors are... always the same. Though Mr. Cage was a little quirky in Raising Arizona.
