  1. I was going to say something about Scott but decided against it. You may find the Masterpiece Theatre "THE LAST PLACE ON EARTH" of interest for the complete story. You can find it on youtube.
  2. No, I have not. In apologetics, one tends to specialize in certain areas -- but you can become "familiar" enough with other issues to make a tentative conclusion. Let's just say that I have been in several discussions on this issue, and other apologists have strongly discouraged me from pursuing this particular issue.
  3. I think this issue deserves an entirely new thread. You should open it, and ask the question there.
  4. 1. Scott’s two motorised sledges (tractors) broke down early on the journey. 3. The dogs were not pets. Cows are also "cute". The dogs that were killed were used for both the men and the remaining dogs.
  5. Here is an article from lds.org. See the section titled "Papyri" https://www.lds.org/topics/translation-and-historicity-of-the-book-of-abraham?lang=eng Unfortunately, this article gives credence to the so-called catalysis theory, which is IMO baloney. If you want to discuss the issue of the translation of the Book of Abraham, please start another thread.
  6. My post has been revised. Did my own checking.
  7. I ran across this Perhaps you are right, but he does not appear to have an agenda in this video -- creationism, etc. No one has complained about his statements.
  8. Some issues are still very difficult to handle, e.g. the translation of the Book of Abraham.
  9. My purpose is not to do missionary work, or meet the needs of the antiMormons but to respond to their assertions. For me, apologetics is a hobby like chess or softball. I guess you could call it "golf + football." But I do usually refer them to the missionaries on mormon.org or various videos which explain our beliefs.
  10. CRITIC Joseph Smith was in Carthage jail for treason RESPONSE FACT CHECK -- He was arrested for the Nauvoo Expositor incident. He then posted bail, but before being released, the indictment was changed to treason because bail was not allowed on a charge of treason. Clearly the Nauvoo Expositor destruction had nothing to do with treason. It was used only to keep him in jail long enough for the mob to do their work.
  11. Please pardon my previous post. It sometimes happens that growth can occur suddenly in a ward -- new move-ins, and you missed out on it. But you can see how a ward split means "losing" long time friends, and trying to adjust to a new ward. Didn't want you to think I was making a personal comment.
  12. Interesting. You have done your homework. Can we now conclude that we must adjust the entire dating system in the Book of Mormon, which would then give us the correct date of Christ's birth.
  13. And you know this.... how? While you may be correct, it is pretty specific when it says "since the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the flesh," and you are saying, "Nah, it doesn't really mean what it says." There has been several textual changes in the D&C, especially those which are questionable, but somehow this phrase has survived. Perhaps you can share your source with us. Perhaps you are simply repeating some of the speculative comments by historians and apologists, but I have missed seeing anything authoritative.,
  14. Don't feel bad. Perhaps they had a sudden explosion of growth after you left.
  15. Iran said Monday it independently collected samples at a suspect military site where illicit nuclear work is alleged to have occurred and later handed them to the UN's absent inspectors. The disclosure that international monitors were not physically present is likely to feed critics of a nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, who have poured scorn on measures used to check if Tehran's atomic programme is peaceful .http://news.yahoo.com/iran-hands-iaea-samples-suspect-military-005156026.html Question--> what will be Kerry's response: 1. We can trust the Iranians eventually to keep their end of the agreement. They gave me their personal assurance. 2. I don't understand. 3. Don't worry, it's all part of the terms of the treaty.
  16. We are encouraged to learn from all sources of truth, from the best books" -- science, math, history, etc, and, yes, from the scriptures. I think we are responsible for making an attempt to reconcile the scriptures with science, history, languages, social studies, psychology. The Lord made it clear that the attitude "it doesn't affect my salvation" is an unacceptable excuse. DC90:15
  17. Note on Amulek and polygamy== Alma 10 [11]... he hath blessed me, and my women, and my children, and my father and my kinsfolk; 1. The word translated as "woman" is often interchangeable with "wife" in many languages. 2. My children, my father, my kinsfolk, and my "women". 3. While possible that it refers servants, they would all be female. I don't think he's talking about servants. 4. I am assuming that women refers to wives, since everyone else is mentioned except his spouse. For me it is a clear reference to wives, but obviously others disagree with me.
  18. He was giving an exact quote from the record that he was copying.
  19. I think D&C section 91 applies here, as the Lord talks about the apocrypha. Not needful, but the Lord encourages us to lean what we can from it. 4 Therefore, whoso readeth it, let him understand, for the Spirit manifesteth truth; 5 And whoso is enlightened by the Spirit shall obtain benefit therefrom; Also Facsimile 2 in the Book of Abraham 11. If the world can find out these numbers, so let it be. Amen. The Lord encourages us to glean what we can from revealed scripture, even if it is not "needful at this time" for the Lord to clarify it.
  20. If you don't see it, I guess I can't explain it to you.
  21. Are you saying, "We don't know" That never occurred to me.
  22. Where did Alma get the priesthood to baptize? How did the Nephites carry out the law of Moses when there were no Levites among them? Which BOM prophet was a polygamist? (the text makes it very clear) How do we reconcile the BOM dating of Lehi leaving Jerusalem with the secular (Biblical) dating?
  23. Have you read Matt 24 in the Pearl of Great Price lately? Just curious.
