Help me puzzle out this statement by Elder James E. Talmage
cdowis replied to Laniston's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
There was a program on KBYUTV on the Dead Sea Scrolls which basically said that they are interesting but did not have any special meaning for the church. You don't really hear much about them in discussions of gospel doctrine. That particular bandwagon has come and gone and drove right past the church. There is some historical interest, of course. -
The Challenge from a Catholic CRITIC Your church is heretical because blah blah blah RESPONSE I have made a decision a long time ago not to engage in a discussion on LDS vs the Catholic church. It simply comes down to a basic assumption -- does the RCC represent the continuation of authority of the church that Christ organized. If yes, there is nothing to talk about. If not, there is nothing to talk about. Basically you believe that the Pope has the "key" of authority passed down from Peter, and we believe that key of authority was restored to a prophet in our day. That key of authority is held today by the LDS church. This whole discussion of who's the heretic is just a side show. It's all about authority from God. In any case, our two churches have a great deal in common and work together on many worthy projects. If you want to know more about us and our doctrines, go to mormon.org You can also start a chat there. I wish you all the best. ++++++++++ He responded, asking if we can be friends.

MormonGatorDo you know what happens to plants when you give them a regular dose of that kind of music? They shrivel up and die a horrible death. http://www.dovesong.com/positive_music/plant_experiments.asp.

In my life experience I have found that a gift can become a dangerous thing. Regardless of that gift, if we are not careful it can be used improperly and turned to serve oneself or to do evil. Just a warning.

Are you suggesting that we shut down this thread? The Joseph Smith Papers project is based on the assumption that such historical details are of interest to the church and some of its members. -

When Enoch was "translated", what other language did he become. I think that this word is very flexible in how it is applied. Angels dancing on a pinhead, so to speak. -
PROBLEM ==>> Basically the agreement expires in 15 years, where Iran will have full authority to develop it's nuclear warheads. Mark that down on your calendar. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/24/world/middleeast/in-pushing-for-the-iran-nuclear-deal-obamas-rationale-shows-flaws.html?_r=0

Isaiah 2: 3 ...he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. There will be two locations -- Zion (the New Jerusalem) for the gathering of the Ten Tribes and Jerusalem for the gathering of the Jews. The physical gathering of Israel means that the covenant people will be “gathered home to the lands of their inheritance, and shall be established in all their lands of promise” (2 Nephi 9:2). The tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh will be gathered in the Americas. The tribe of Judah will return to the city of Jerusalem and the area surrounding it. The ten lost tribes will receive from the tribe of Ephraim their promised blessings (see D&C 133:26–34). https://www.lds.org/manual/gospel-principles/chapter-42-the-gathering-of-the-house-of-israel?lang=eng

Are There Kingdoms Above the Celestial?

"Higher" does not mean what you think it means in this context. It is not being used in a comparative but in an absolute sense. If you're unclear on what I mean, just substitute the word "highest". exalted in rank, station, eminence, etc.; of exalted character or quality: dictionary.com -

Thanks for sharing with us your personal opinion on what constitutes canonized scripture and official doctrine. Perhaps this statement from the church will clarify this issue. http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/approaching-mormon-doctrine -
For obvious reasons, I have requested that my discussion thread be closed Sorry about that.

Nothing personal, but this is really really silly. Why did the church conduct a survey regarding garments? This is not a matter of obedience, but the design of the garment itself so that it meets the comfort needs AND fulfills the function of the garment. Why do we have two piece instead of the one piece -- why was that change made? A friend of mine has garments with a special design to fit his physical condition. Should he have simply worn the regular garment "out of obedience", as a "test of his faith"? While we cannot discuss the details, the endowment ceremony has now slight changes for the convenience of the patrons.

Now The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is asking members for feedback about the fit, fabric, size and style of garments. And many Mormon feminists are cheering — and eagerly sharing their opinions. "I love the whole idea of the temple garment," LDS blogger Jana Riess writes for Religion News Service. "It delights me that there is no concept of something being irredeemably profane in my religion. ... Even underwear can be sanctified." However, she does not always love "the garment in practice," Riess says. "In practice, it can feel like a set prop from 'The Itchy & Scratchy Show.' " Sizes often don't fit an array of bodies, she says, and seams can hit a woman's body in, well, the wrong place. "It's encouraging to know that the church is trying hard to identify people's main issues with the garments," she writes, "and to address those issues as much as they can." A little change, she says, "could make a big difference." http://www.sltrib.com/lifestyle/faith/2117286-155/lds-church-asking-mormons-for-input The survey has been completed.

During the planning of the SL temple, one of the saints protested. "President Young, every time we build a temple, the bells of hell start ringing to oppose us." "Brother, let them ring. Let them ring."

QUESTION If the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are actually three separate gods why does the the book of Morman affirm that that there is only one God: RESPONSE Christ explains this in John 17:19-23. This is somewhat similar to the concept of "power of attorney", or patrimony. This gives us an understanding of the meaning of "in my Father's house there are many mansions." Anyway, an example of this is Hebrews 1:1-2, Christ is "appointed heir of all things" and one of his assignments was the creation of the worlds. See also Rev 3:21

I assume this is a very subtle attempt at humor. May I suggest that you learn the basics of contract law, and that is what a treaty is -->> a contract. The issue here is the fulfillment of the terms of the contract. I agree to give you $100, and you agree to sell me your watch. I now give you the money, you sign a receipt, but it stops there. You refuse to give me the watch, so the contract is a worthless piece of paper, and I go to court to collect my money or the watch. The United States agrees to lift sanctions, and Iran agrees to .... whatever -- curtail/stop its production of nuclear grade uranium, etc etc. Now, unlike the example above, there is no physical exchange, so I lift sanctions and then I have to verify whether you are holding to your end of the bargain. BUT the Iranians have a SECRET AGREEMENT with a third party on how this verification will be done. The head guy is threatened with bodily harm if he reveals the details. Now I am either stupid, naive, or just ignorant if I accept this situation, since THE EXISTENCE OF THE ENTIRE WORLD is dependent on whether this rogue regime will keep its word of this unknown verification process. Your humor is very subtle, but is inappropriate here. It is not funny at all.

This thread actually has a point. A missionary related an experience that he had. He was trying to teach someone, but they told him, "As long as 'Joe Doe' is in your church as a leader, I have no interest at all." He then related how Joe Doe had cheated him in a business deal The missionary was shocked because Joe Doe was a stake president, and he was certain that there was some misunderstanding. So he went to the stake president and asked him about what had happened. Yes, he admitted that the story was true. He explained, "You have to understand that business is business, and church is church." Some businessmen and politicians are able to separate the two, so they are able to sleep peacefully at night. I suppose they think going to church, paying tithing, etc gives them "privilege" in their outside lives. They are able to give the "right" answers when they have their temple recommend interview.

There is a limit on what years you can do ordinance work, for the simple reason there would be alot of duplication. There is a limitation on names before 1500. You must submit at least two names and document the information, and (I think) show a direct relationship.

I keep up with the news http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/248856-white-house-acknowledges-side-deals-between-iran-iaea http://townhall.com/tipsheet/guybenson/2015/08/19/ap-secret-iran-side-deal-allows-iran-to-inspect-itself-at-key-nuclear-site-n2041113 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/obamas-secret-iran-deals-exposed/2015/07/27/26d14dbc-3460-11e5-8e66-07b4603ec92a_story.html Threats by Iran of bodily harm on revealing details of agreement http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2015/08/18/iran-threatened-harm-to-top-nuke-inspector-to-prevent-disclosure-secret-deal/ http://www.christiantoday.com/article/iran.admits.it.threatened.to.harm.top.un.official.if.he.leaks.secret.nuke.side.deals/62366.htm Just do a google and there are many other sources. I assume that you are informed enough to know that the inspection of the nuclear sites is the key to this whole agreement. Now, please tell us the terms of the inspection, since you are confident in the treaty. But be careful because the Iranians may do you "bodily harm". The existence of Israel, and our entire civilization hangs upon this treaty and on how the terms will be verified.
