Senator Reed Votes to Block a Bill Banning Late-term Abortions
cdowis replied to cdowis's topic in Current Events
Despite the official stance of the church, many prominent Utahns argued that repeal was inevitable and a better alternative than the gangsterism, bootlegging, bathtub gin production, speak-easies and other illegal activities that mushroomed under the ban. Utah put the amendment over the top even though Heber J. Grant, then president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, had urged church members not to support repeal, noting for example that highway deaths had decreased greatly during Prohibition. The state held a special election on Nov. 7, 1933, to gauge Utah sentiment and set up a ratification process. In it, 99,943 votes were cast for repeal and 62,437 against. At 3:33 p.m. on Dec. 5, 1933, the 21 members of Utah's Constitutional Convention unanimously endorsed the 21st Amendment — setting off what newspapers of the time described as drinking celebrations nationwide. http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700259759/House-marks-Utahs-role-in-repealing-Prohibition.html?pg=all A question for you ==>> Do you see a difference in legalizing alcohol and legalizing the killing of pain capable 20 week old babies? -

A man For All Seasons (1966 version with Paul Scofield) Quote== William Roper: So, now you give the Devil the benefit of law! Sir Thomas More: Yes! What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil? William Roper: Yes, I'd cut down every law in England to do that! Sir Thomas More: Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws, from coast to coast, Man's laws, not God's! And if you cut them down, and you're just the man to do it, do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake!

Of course, if it is just a drive by insult. I simply wish then well, and then mute or block them. But this is different. This is a "thoughtful" insult based on his previous comments. Hitchens is his hero, and I pointed out his flaws. He was frustrated that he was unable to defend him, so he just lashed out. I'm giving him a second chance. It's an intuition thing that some good could come of this. That's why I called it an instructive conversation.

INSTRUCTIVE CONVERSATION -- Critic was upset about my comments on Hitchens CRITIC Yes, Hitchens was seriously flawed - he chose reason and logic over faith and credulity. He was able to see religion for what it is: man made nonsense. Hitchens also readily admitted what you stated about Newton, amongst others. He never avoided that fact. However, comparing Newton to Joseph Smith is like comparing red wine to marsh water. cdowis >>comparing Newton to Joseph Smith is like comparing red wine to marsh water. Logic based on flawed assumptions and ignorance is garbage -- "garbage in, garbage out". Hitchens was seriously flawed that he could simply avoid a serious study of Mormonism -- "a book delivered by an angel!!! You can't be serious." He could attack and nobody would notice that he was seriously ignorant of the subject. May I also point out that red wine was used by those who poisoned their enemies -- in that case, perhaps swamp water is the preferable drink. CRITIC Mormonism is not to be taken seriously by any thinking person. It's the record of a successful con - it's not even a religion but a scam - believed by not only the credulous but the morally weak and intellectually suspect. It's racist, to boot. If you believe in the teachings of Mormonism then you're willing to believe in almost anything - which would explain why you find the sober common sense of Mr. Hitchens so baffling. cdowisMy friend, you have just demonstrated my point ====>>>>>> This is not logic, but hysterical ranting and mindless hate mongering. Get back to us when you grow up and you are able to have an adult conversation.[My last comment was intended to be provocative -- to issue a challenge to have an intelligent conversation]

NOTE: When transferring families from Ancestry to FS, be sure to check FS that the entire family was transferred. I have had situations where it said everything was transferred, but it did not show up in FS. But no problem when just transferring individuals.

"Inn of the Sixth Happiness" with Ingred Bergman (1958). One of the great inspirational movies from the Golden Age of Movies, based on a real-life person who became a missionary in pre-war China. Humor, romance, suspense A very remarkable ending, shows how the Lord cares for his children even in an obscure, remote village in China. A great movie to watch on Sunday.

You might write about the Mormon refugees coming to El Paso. You could loosely tie this into current events. Start with http://ldsmag.com/article-1-11596/

alleged statement by LDS church re: blood moon
cdowis replied to MrShorty's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, so I copied the statement into the comment section of the Associated Press news story. My comment was then deleted by AP (officially it is still "pending" for the past 9 hours). I tried again, and left out the link to see if that was the problem. -
Let me be specific. I had a friend in my ward with exactly the same issue. So I'll tell you what I told him. 1. You're not too old to get married. 2. Single women, even younger ones, have been attracted and married older men. 3. Forget about your age difference when considering someone to date. The worst she can do is say "No", but if you don't ask her...... I pointed out a divorcee who was probably 20-30 years younger than he was, and told him to ask her for a date. They did date abit, but she already had a boyfriend. But something amazing happened ==> when he made it known that he was looking around, another sister approached him, they dated, and now he's married. Ask your married friends someone they would suggest that you should check out. Again, FORGET THE AGE DIFFERENCE (within reason, of course). This is going to be someone who has already gotten past the dating age of thirty five or so. An older man offers stability and maturity that she will find attractive. My friend was married within a year from when I first talked with him about it.

cdowis replied to cdowis's topic in Current Events
I don't think the church is really into dictating and judging one's voting record. Even someone who has had an abortion is not going to be called into a church court. -
Often the emphasis is on balancing the number of active priesthood leaders and sisters available to fill leadership positions. But you do make an interesting point. I understand a group at the stake level makes recommendations on the boundaries of the new wards. You can imagine how difficult it is when you try to balance up the nursery and deacon's quorum as well.

alleged statement by LDS church re: blood moon
cdowis replied to MrShorty's topic in General Discussion
SALT LAKE CITY — (September 26, 2015) In response to several news media inquiries, the Church recently issued the following statement: The Church encourages our members to be spiritually and physically prepared for life's ups and downs. For many decades, Church leaders have counseled members that, where possible, they should gradually build a supply of food, water and financial resources to ensure they are self-reliant during disasters and the normal hardships that are part of life, including illness, injury or unemployment. This teaching to be self-reliant has been accompanied by the counsel of Church leaders to avoid being caught up in extreme efforts to anticipate catastrophic events. The writings and speculations of individual Church members, some of which have gained currency recently, should be considered as personal accounts or positions that do not reflect Church doctrine. (my emphasis) http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/church-responds-to-inquiries-about-preparedness -
AN EXTENDED CONVERSATION-- I feel this is instructive in dealing with hostile critics. CRITIC Did you know that all Cults have the same testimony , and yet all Cults are contrast in their doctrine and beliefs, also they all have the same claim that we are THE ONLY true church. So how can your divine manifestation is true and someone from the Jehovah Witness who have the same divine manifestation is wrong? RESPONSE "Seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened go you." Now, you can read, study and ask God whether the Book of Mormon is true. Or make a bunch of excuses, and do nothing because you don't believe what Christ said. Each of us are personally responsible for the decisions that we make. Don't blame it on other people. CRITIC you are a real Mormon who wanted so bad the LDS to be true,if you have guts to defend your church give me your phone number and I will call you and we will settle the matter. RESPONSE >> have guts to defend your church That's between you and the Lord. I'm not your mother. I do my talking here in a public forum. I will be happy to answer questions but I have no interest in getting in an argument with you. CRITIC you can call it argument or whatever, so if you are happy to answer question than here is my question, Why God gave revelation to Joseph Smith to marry a few women who already married? RESPONSE That's a fair question. Are you familiar with the two forms of marriage in the LDS church -- 1. the temporal marriage -- which normally involves physical intimacy, and is "til death do us part" 2.the "eternal" marriage or sealing. This takes effect only after the death of both parties, and is for eternity. Sometimes she is referred to as the "sister wife". A sister in this life, and the wife in the next life. You are referring to women who were already in a temporal marriage, and they became "spiritual" wives to Joseph Smith. This was a very unusual distinction when this combination of polygamy and sealing was just started. Today they are combined into one marriage. Although, under certain circumstances, it is possible to seal a deceased man and deceased woman even though they were never married in this life -- they were engaged, for example, and one or both died before their marriage. ===This person just doesn't give up=== CRITIC that answer is definitely a Cult not Christianity,so next ? is why God stop polygamy ANSWER And this is where you stop asking and begin arguing. I wish you all the best.

Again, I will not judge this person, but our friend Harry Reed has now gone down a very dark road ==>> There was a bill that banned late-term abortions, after 20 weeks where it has been proven that the unborn baby feels pain. Brother Reed voted against cloture, basically killing the bill. I'm sure that he could use his finely tuned rhetorical skills to justify his actions, at least to himself. After all, he didn't actually vote against the ban, but only to prevent it from coming up for a vote. http://dailysignal.com/2015/09/22/senate-democrats-block-bill-banning-late-term-abortions/

I think it is safe to assume that this is an urban myth.

Jacob said that the Lamanites were NOT practicing polygamy, which is evidence of the existence of the "others". The Lamanites included a large group of "others", with whom they intermarried. The Nephites could not compete with the Lamanites in assimilating the others.
-
Perhaps, but I think a more likely explanation is that the Lamanites intermarried and were more successful in joining with the inhabitants The Nephites would have been less likely to intermarry with them, and less..."flexible" with adapting their customs. A few years ago (don't have the reference now), archaeologists found that a certain group of inhabitants buried their dead within the village for thousands of years. But approximately 300-400BCE that practice suddenly stopped and the burial s were then far outside the village. I felt this was possibly under the influence of the Nephites, based on the Hebrew custom of respecting the graves from defilement I seem to remember that this discovery was in Costa Rica.

Papal condemnations of capitalism that also give godless communism a free pass from criticism are a sin, a prominent Cuban-American religious leader said this week. “Why do you and other religion leaders condemn capitalism so strongly, and offer us a list of all the disasters that result from it on earth, but we never see an equally strong condemnation of atheist communism, which continues to cause the world so much harm?” Rev. Alberto Cutié, a former Catholic priest who is now an Episcopal priest, wrote in a column in the Miami Herald. “Is it really more important to have diplomatic relations with a country that has not had free elections in 50 years, that abuses its people, that has a well-documented history of oppressing and robbing the Church–than to seek justice, the common good and freedom for all Cubans?” he asked Pope Francis, who met recently with Raul Castro and other Cuban leaders. “I don’t understand–and don’t think I will ever begin to understand–why a man of God can meet with oppressors, but not the oppressed,” Rev. Cutie concluded. http://www.westernjournalism.com/a-well-known-cuban-american-priest-just-asked-pope-francis-the-one-question-on-everyones-mind/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=TeaPartyNewsletter&utm_campaign=AM1&utm_content=2015-09-25
