  1. Exactly. See my conspiracy theory answer to Gator. I have no idea, nor do I have any idea why the person making the claim was making the claim. I'm just helping the interwebs to get its daily dose of unfounded nonsense.
  2. That was not my suggestion. My suggestion was that maybe they won't be able to find another job. Their problem and no one else's as far as I'm concerned.
  3. Yeah, I wondered the same thing. Is it a case of "secret woke" hiring more "secret woke" regardless of credentials, or is it just someone making up insults to explain away how these folks came to be at BYU. I don't know.
  4. Some folks are claiming, "not really." In other words, they're saying that some of these folks are at BYU, riding on their Church membership, because other universities wouldn't hire them (their credentials are not impressive enough on their own to land a university position).
  5. Given the size of houses and their rooms back then, do you really think she was that far away?
  6. Do you have a source for this account?
  7. Fixed it for meself.
  8. It's always midnight (the midnight hour) somewhere on Earth.
  9. Now I'm wondering what company you found to arrange this. The only two with which I have experience don't seem to offer these sorts of things - or if they do, they hide it very well - which is my whole complaint against the insurance industries across the board - they rely on fear and confusion. I'm seriously considering doing what @Carborendum proposes as I doubt I will ever need my homeowner's insurance - pretty sure the world will end before I do.
  10. These are the ones you avoid in real life - whatever else is true, they won't make good friends - or, if they're young enough, they need to spend more time with a crab attached to their face so they learn empathy. (If they don't quickly learn empathy, leave them behind.)
  11. Not, not the only person. Lilochipie is funny (and funnier still, IMO, with all the "excuse me sir" stuff overlaid):
  12. Check out how much it will cost you, @Traveler (or any Utahn), to add earthquake coverage to your homeowner's insurance, versus, say, tornado coverage. The insurance companies know the risks for a given area and will include the low-risk items, but they'll charge you a pretty (gazillion) penny(ies) to cover things that are probable in your area.
  13. Wow, the French get 6 extra chapters of Enos!? Guess I need to learn French...
  14. IMO, there's a difference here: Sanderson is not just including LGBTQ+ characters (and their words and actions) in ways that reflect the world around him. He is also, in the real world, promoting things that are contrary to what the Church teaches. (This is the greater concern than what's in his stories.) Creating the thing from your imagination is very different from swiping someone's credit card, or setting someone's alcoholic drink on the table. It may be that one has to experience the creation of characters and stories to understand this, but trust me, the difference huge. His characters and their actions are alive inside his head. They are infinitely more real than the person on the other side of the counter or seated at the table (because he knows the characters, whereas the cashier and the waiter(ess) don't know the customer). And he experiences far more of their thoughts, feelings, words, and actions than the reader ever sees on the page.
  15. My intent was to say that I am coming at this question of Sanderson's LGBTQ+ views and actions from the perspective of a faithful member, not from the perspective of politics.
  16. Left schmeft, right schmright. I could not care less. Toward the restored gospel or away? Now I care.
  17. Yes, huge. He doesn't need to do this to get his name out there - it was huge before word of this came out. And he is prolific - tons of books, and lots of "side stuff" in the world of book and comic conventions. The FAQ points at changing views from him over time. Whether he "needs" to support LGBTQ+ views to continue selling at the same rate (or keep his editor or publisher or agent), I couldn't begin to tell you.
  18. Well, full woke are certainly not satisfied (as he indicates in the FAQ), they would have him go a lot further. One of the biggest red flags for me is this: He is trying to change the Church. Obviously, he's not going to change the Lord or His prophets, but he could be having a huge impact on his ward and stake, especially its youth.
  19. This thread cannot be complete without a sword bathed in heaven:
  20. I read fantasy almost exclusively (as far as fiction goes). Granted, I'm probably not "current" on fantasy because I have a backlog and have lost my ability to concentrate on fiction. But I've read enough to say that I believe that Brandon Sanderson may well have the most creative imagination I have ever encountered, and the most amazing skill when it comes to writing a good ending to a story. He is exceptional in these two regards. And everything between is very well executed (in those of his books that I have read and in comparison to everything else I have read, most of which I thoroughly enjoyed). This is why I believe he has (or had) a huge gift from God. I know quite a lot about Sanderson's writing process, and it's equally obvious that he didn't bury that talent - he worked hard to magnify it - so I'm not trying to say it's only a gift from God with no effort from Sanderson. Anywho, when I read the FAQ I linked (and apparently you can find social media posts along the same line, though I haven't tried to confirm that), it makes me sad. Heaven knows how it will all end up, but in the meantime, he is encouraging things not compatible with eternal truth, and that's not good for anyone.
  21. I guess that depends on what he says when he's interviewed (apparently professors at BYU have to have regular interviews akin to a temple recommend interview, but with additional questions), and what the interviewer thinks of his answers.
  22. According to his website, yes. https://faq.brandonsanderson.com/knowledge-base/ive-heard-you-are-a-practicing-member-of-the-church-of-jesus-christ-of-latter-day-saints-what-are-your-opinions-on-gay-rights-particularly-in-light-of-the-churchs-controversial-rel/
  23. I haven't read the Stormlight Archive, at all, but I have read several other books (all before, I suspect, his "going woke"). And, IMO, he could not have even written those books, let alone attained the success he has, without a serious gift from God (the likes of which few ever have or ever will receive). I believe he has let it all go to his head and pride has led him to embrace the ways of the great and spacious building. It's a tragedy. He will be left to his own strength until and unless he repents. To that point: Well, yeah, can't let go of the audience / income / potential converts. (Perhaps he has convinced himself that the lies are true à la Korihor.
