Tithing: Pre-tax or After tax? Gross v. Net?

so... what happens if we are taxed 91%? -
In general conference ....., President Monson spoke to those estranged from the Church and to all of us when he said: "In the private sanctuary of one's own conscience lies that spirit, that determination to cast off the old person and to measure up to the stature of true potential. In this spirit, we again issue that heartfelt invitation: Come back. We reach out to you in the pure love of Christ and express our desire to assist you and to welcome you into full fellowship. To those who are wounded in spirit or who are struggling and fearful, we say, Let us lift you and cheer you and calm your fears"

What would happen if a nuke went off in the stratosphere?
threepercent replied to ruthiechan's topic in General Discussion
yes, and that is because of mil-spec, anything required to be hardened has to be able to withstand the very rigorous tests associated with being right under the "street lamp." most all electronics in this area will be toast unless hardened. the emp's loss of power (amplitude) when generated by a bomb is crazy high. of course the sun also produces EMP's that can make all this theory go to pot. and as you say, the spectrum of a HEMP is very wide, so not all protected circuits will withstand the wave, but many circuits with lightning or surge protection will. here is the waveform: kEpkea(t-ts) E(t) = --------------(kV/m) l+e(a+b)(t-ts) where the coefficients are given by-- Epk = 50 kVtm, the peak electric field (kV/meter) k = 1.2, a normalization constant a = 5 x 108 sec-1, the exponential rise rate (sec-1) b = 2.3 x 107 sec-1, the exponential decay rate (sec-1) Ts = 10-8 sec, the time shift parameter (sec) t = the time of interest (sec). -
Pres. Romney, “The great overall struggle in the world today is, as it has always been, for the souls of men. Every soul is personally engaged in the struggle, and he makes his fight with what is in his mind. In the final analysis the battleground is, for each individual, within himself. Inevitably he gravitates toward the subjects of his thoughts. Ages ago the wise man states this great truth “As he thinketh in his heart, so is he.” (Prov. 23:7) “If we would escape the lusts of the flesh and build for ourselves and our children great and noble characters, we must keep in our minds and in their minds true and righteous principles, for our thoughts and their thoughts to dwell upon. “We must not permit our minds to be come overindulged with the interests, things, and practices of the world about us. To do so is tantamount to adopting and going along with them. Vice is a monster of so frightful mien, As to be hated, needs but to be seen; Yet seen to oft, with her familiar face, We first endure, then pity, and then embrace. (Pope, Essay on Man) “If we would avoid the evils of the world, we must pursue a course which will daily feed our minds with, and call them back to, the things of the Spirit. I know of no better way to do this than by daily reading the Book of Mormon. Pres. Romney “It is irrational to hope to escape the lusts of the world without substituting them, as the subjects of our thoughts, for the things of the Spirit. I know that the things of the Spirit are taught with mighty power in the Book of Mormon. I believe with all my heart, that if our young people could come out of our homes thoroughly acquainted with the life of Nephi, imbued with the spirit of his courage and love of truth, they would choose the right when the choice is placed before them.” Pres. Romney “I counsel you to make reading the Book of Mormon, 30 minutes each day, a life long practice. All of us need the uninterrupted association with the Spirit of the Lord. We need to take the Holy Spirit for our constant guide so that we be not deceived. I am persuaded by my own experience , that of my loved ones, as well as the Prophet Joseph Smith, that one can get, and keep, closer to the Lord by reading the Book of Mormon than by reading any other book. Don't be content with what someone else tells you about what is in it. Drink deeply from the divine fountain itself.” Pres. Benson “It is not sufficient that the Book of Mormon be found in our homes; its principles must be captured in our minds and hearts. Through consistent reading, prayerful pondering and conscientious application of principles, its teachings will become an essential part of the fabric of our lives. It can become a personal Urim and Thummin in your life.” Pres. Ezra Taft Benson “Every Latter-day Saint should make the study of this book a lifetime pursuit. Otherwise he is placing his soul in jeopardy and neglecting that which could give spiritual and intellectual unity to his whole life. There is a difference between a convert who is built on the rock of Christ through the Book of Mormon and stays hold of that iron rod, and one who is not. There is a difference within the church, in discernment, insight, conviction, and spirit, between those members who love the Book of Mormon and those who do not.” Pres. Romney, “I feel certain that if, in our homes, parents will read from the Book of Mormon, prayerfully and regularly, both by themselves and with their children, the spirit of that great book will come to permeate our homes and all who dwell therein. The spirit of reverence will increase; mutual respect and consideration for each other will grow. The spirit of contention will depart. Parents will counsel their children in greater love and wisdom. Children will be more responsive and submissive to the counsel of their parents. Righteousness will increase. Faith, hope, and charity - the pure love of Christ -will abound in our homes and lives bringing in their wake peace, joy, and happiness.”

Keys of Asking For and Recieving Knowledge

What would happen if a nuke went off in the stratosphere?
threepercent replied to ruthiechan's topic in General Discussion
this is incorrect think of an emp as a streetlamp. the area that would experience massive electronic damage is the small area under the lamp that is well lit. most electronics with a circuit board will not work after an EMP in this area of effect. but things like flashlights will. transmission lines are a diffrent story. now think of yourself way away from the streetlamp, but within line of sight so you can see it. of course you can see the lamp from much much further away that you could use the lamp to read by.... any transmission lines in this area of effect are toast. so a relatively small area will experience total electronic deviation, and a huge area will experience loss of the power grid. a few (perhaps 4) well placed bombs could take out the entire us grid for perhaps 4 months to a year. yet those same bombs would take out only the electronics of the city proper of 4 large cities. also, due to the nature of deployment of an EMP (optimal altitude) you don't really have fallout issues, as most fallout is from debris sucked up from the initial blast, and that doesn't happen with a high altitude burst. EMP also is a tactical stepchild as well. it has limited uses. -

perhaps I should apologize to you, I had just finished reading Sun Tzu's famous treatise prior to that post in a single sitting. that tends to push me towards a more militant approach to the war in heaven, and that is what you are engaged in. I take no offense at all. like I say, I am just here for you, I have had much, much, much worse at the hands of addicts, believe me. what the others have said about hanging in there is true. follow it. and my offer stands when you are ready.

The Amazing Connection between Thoughts and Feelings
threepercent replied to Hemidakota's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
at five they dont have the full choice yet. heck, I am 41 and I have trouble with it still, but dont stop telling them, just understand. when we are born, we are slaves to our emotions. mom MAKES us feel good by feeding us... so on. to be an adult is to emancipate ourselves from those bonds of childhood, then from our parents, then from outside influence (read here the great and spacious building and those who mock) and then to become a god is to take that perfect agency and match it to the Lord. -
again, I just want to say, I am putting my money where my mouth is Lost, I will do ANYTHING I can to help you. ANYTHING. I promise. If you are in utah, my best friends life is dedicated to this cause. I can help. I do not judge you at all. I will call out your lies, but I will never judge you. and I will love you.

you think porn addiction is funny? no? you just think you are funny? anyone who has ever dealt with any addiction will easily recognize the thinking errors in the OP. It is about 1/2 cry for help, and 1/2 nothing but lame excuses. and the response tells me there is little current desire to really fix the problem, and thats common. giving up a addiction is tough, because the person has to want to loose it more than anything else, and every addiction has its own desires. Porn is difficult because it is really "self medicating" in that you can release the stimulants merely by thinking about it. You become your own drug dealer. so the addict looks for enablers, like you, darkly, and lost87, who just aggravate the situation by coddling the little one and saying there, there, it will all just be alright, when what he needs is the truth. they look for someone who will say, your efforts are noble, when they are not. Lostsheep's eternal welfare is at stake, and this is the most real war he will ever face, if he decides to face it. I did not say that external controls are bad, I said keep them if they help your internal controls, but to pretend that external controls are anything but a crutch is utter bull. only the internal controls matter in the end. only there comes real freedom. you are never free if you cannot face your addiction, you at some point have to look at the bottle, or the smoke. or the needle, or the doughnut, or the porn, and walk away of your own choice. only then are you free. take a good look at this pile of crud let me translate, I dont like this advice, so I am going to play the pity card, and threaten to go back to my old ways. no, you are not "only trying to do whats right" you are playing a game. all this from someone who needs to grow up badly. I offered my email, my im, my phone, my undying support, if he would fight... does that sound like I am saying dont enlist help? get real. I said get support from those who really love you enough to tell you when you are full of it. that is the most important part of any "12 step" or anything else, people who will tell you the truth even when it hurts. so I am telling the truth, Lost, you have a cancer, it needs to be cut out. it will suck. you need to act like a man, not a coward. you are 19? act like it. grow up and quit playing the pity card. If you are here in utah I will help if you really want to win. I will help you get a support group that understands and will never judge you at all. I will give you my personal phone number and you can call me 24/7 if you need help. I will do anything in my power to help you, but you have to help yourself first. I, nor anyone else can do it for you, we can only offer support. the real battle line is in your thoughts, and you have to garnish your thoughts with virtue all the time. that is the real battle front. anything else is just symptoms. no one but you can win that battle. no one but you can control your thoughts. no one but you can decide if you really want to fight to win or if you just want to drag this out. I am sorry that you have received such pitiful advice such as '"The advise I've been given for the longest time on this site is to get an internet filter. " that is only an external control not a real focus on the problem, and that is your choices. having a internet filter is great if it helps, but you have to fix the real problem, not just cover it up. to do that you have to face it. you need to stop objectifying women in your head. you need to stop allowing improper thoughts to creep in. you know you NEVER sat down at the computer to look at the porn without having ALREADY lost the battle. there are great resources to help you. but you have to want help. you may be able to fling that crud on others here, but not me, I have had my own roads to trod, and so I can call you out with the voice of experience. if you want real help, I am here, just pm me, if not, wallow in your cowardice till you are. I suspect I will be around when you hit bottom. you will never be able to have a good relationship. you will utterly wreck your life. you cannot experience the best things life has to offer if you continue. you cannot even understand what real love is, either for yourself or for another. is that a joke? is that melodramatic?

free? free? what? a prison could be defined as walls that prevent a person from doing what they cannot prevent themselves from doing. sounds to me like you built a prison not set yourself free. You need to face the facts. you are acting like a slave, and a pitiful one at that, but you hold the keys to your bondage. If you want to be a free person, you are going to have to act like it, and you are going to have to fight for your freedom. YOU are going to have to go to war. YOU are going to have to win the war. YOU will have to plant your flag and say "HERE I STAND". YOU are going to have to stop pretending that the battle lines are external and face yourself and your thoughts. You know the reason you use external controls is because your internal controls suck. you need to buttress up your internal control, pick the real battle line, (and you know that that line is when you first allow improper thoughts, not when you sit down to look at porn and the battle is already lost) armor up, draw your sword, hunker down behind your shield, sing a song of battle and raise your flag. in other words, YOU have to CHOOSE to go to war as a warrior not to whine like a slave that your chains are heavy. You can still use external controls, especially if they help your internal controls. but stop pretending that you are fighting if you are not going to fight. NO one but you can fight this battle. NO ONE> others can help, others can point out your tactical and strategical errors. others can offer behind the line support and encouragement, but you and you alone will have to face this demon. just get busy and do it. I will support you in this fight all I can, but coddle you I will not. I will personally dedicate time to email and pm and call and anything else I can do to assist you, but I will only tell you the harsh truth. you need a support group that will wave the bs flag when you start to spout junk like this. you need people who love you enough that they will call you out as a liar when you lie and a chicken when you cower. you need people you can trust enough to call when you need help. you need to turn to the Lord in all these things most. Where are you? there are support groups of this type everywhere, and like I said I will also offer my support if you are ready to really fight.

the key to understanding creation is not to learn about creation, but to learn about the fall, and the atonement. you will never find those answers in the geological record.

Letter of the law vs. the spirit of the law
threepercent replied to Misshalfway's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
no, its not muddy when you understand the law of obedience, nor is it when you undertake the task of taking the name of the savior upon yourself. now again, you cannot judge others with this understanding, only yourself. here are three very nice passages: Wherefore, the Lord God gave unto man that he should act for himself. Wherefore, man could not act for himself save it should be that he was enticed by the one or the other. Wherefore, men are free according to the flesh; and call things are given them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself. And not choose eternal death, according to the will of the flesh and the evil which is therein, which giveth the spirit of the devil power to captivate, to bring you down to hell, that he may reign over you in his own kingdom. you see the natural man is the enemy to god. we are self serving, also known as the "will of the flesh" when you ask yourself the deep quesitons about your motivation or your choices, you can really ask am I doing so because I so deeply love my Father and want to please him. your choices will then become much clearer. the law of obedience is simple in that you may do wrong things, or even useless things, and you will get the benefit of having chosen liberty and eternal life. this is simplified, of course, but it is true that agency consists of two paths, and you may take a path that needs to be corrected by the atonement, and if you have chosen that path out of obedience, you are eligible for mercy. -

Letter of the law vs. the spirit of the law
threepercent replied to Misshalfway's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
I have stated this before on here, and it is a concept that some find difficult to understand but it is quite beautiful once you grasp it. there is a huge difference between a law and a commandment, but we often get them confused. a law does not have a "spirit" attached to it. it just is. the outcome is tied to the action in a unbreakable bond except through the atonement. a law is like an if/then statement. IF you do this THEN such and such will happen. a commandment has the "spirit of the law" attached to it. to put it in secular terms, its like saying "what is the law trying to accomplish". for example, lets take speeding, the purpose of speed limit laws is to preserve life, so, it would make sense that you could break the speed limit to save a life. spirit vrs letter. A commandment IS NOT law. again, and example would be appropriate here. in this example I will use a simplified parenting technique for a child learning to use the stove. the law is: touch the stove, you burn your hand. again, no spirit, it just is the chain of commandments: at age 2 = stay out of the kitchen when dad is cooking at age 4 = you can help stir the mac and cheese with direct supervision at age 7 = you can stir the mac and cheese without supervision, but dad is in the kitchen at age 12 = you can make mac and cheese at age 18 = you can make whatever you want, you know and understand the law, and are responsible for the outcomes of your own actions. we receive far more commandments in this life than laws. one mistake people make is they ignore the LAW of obedience when they think they understand some other law more than its associated commandments. still, we are here to learn the law, not the commandments, the commandments are tools to help us learn the law. knowing the law is to become as gods, knowing good from evil. I hope that helps you with your personal understanding of the spirit vrs the letter of the law, it will not help you to judge others. I can expound if this raises questions. -
Resurrection, evolution and the Gospel
threepercent replied to threepercent's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
no no no, your answer is invalid, so dont post it again. come on people, between snow, traveler, and ogre, I am now convinced that evolution is indeed a fact, and that believe otherwise is just a show of ignorance. so jump on the bandwagon and stop being an ignoramus. now, having fully embraced the learning of men, I just have some natural questions that stem from my new understanding of the creation, the fall, the atonement, and the Resurrection. as we all now KNOW< god used the process of evolution to create the body he then placed Adam in, or something like that. so I guess he will use the same process to create a celestial body for me when I die and go to heaven. I mean that logicaly follows right? god is the same yesterday today and forever so he would use the same method... course, I have already run into some problems that I am sure snow will jump right on here to solve for us lesser educated pegans. such as and so, if i understand correctly, god used evolution to create a body who couldnt have children and wouldnt die, then that body did something that re-introduced death and procreation, but it was doomed to return to the dust that it came from. i think. anyway, I am just waiting on the smart people to come tell me how celestial bodies are formed. or created. after that we will figure out how water evolves into wine, and how a loaf of bread evolves into more bread. -

right, so how long will it take god to produce me a celestial body for me (via evolution) to enter after I die? -
so, this question is for all those people who have evolution and the history of the earth figured out. how long will it take evolution to create the body I get when I get resurrected? I am going to go out on a limb here (get the evolutionary connection? insert chortle) and say that it would follow that those who reach the celestial kingdom will have to wait the longest for their bodies to fully evolve before they can be "put into" them. and can you tell me, as long as we are going to discuss such deep subjects, the evolutionary mechanism of "tarrying in the flesh" as it pertains to the three nephites? we can skip Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego for now.

the gospel works in my life because it carries me through times like what you are experiencing. If I may suggest, place everything on the altar. the rain falls on both houses, the one built on the rock, and the one on the sand.
