So PC, if someone is a member of your faith and doesn't experience the speaking in tongues, how does the church view this???? And it is my understanding that there must be an interpretation to any manifestation. Do you believe the same is true? And one final question, what is the purpose of speaking in tongues if no one understands the message.....not the person speaking or the congregation witnessing it?? And I don't quite understand the idea that those two groups are the only ones blessed simply because they asked for it. Something seems off to me about that. Just can't put my finger on it. Hmmm......I guess it is because I believe that every blessing given under heaven is given BECAUSE of obedience to the truth required for that blessing. I may pray for tongues and my Father in heaven may not bless me with such because it isn't expedient for me. It is all wisdom in him.

I am reading in 1 Nephi right now. Here are a few verses that jumped out to me. 17:36-39 Behold, the Lord hath created the earth that it should be inhabited: and he hath created his children that they should possess it. And he raiseth up a righteous nation, destroyeth the nations of the wicked. And he leadeth away the righteous into precious lands, and the wicked he destroyeth, and curseth the land unto them for their sakes. He ruleth high in the heavens, for it is his throne, and this earth is his footstool. 19:19-24 19 Wherefore, I speak unto all the house of Israel, if it so be that they should obtain athese things. 20 For behold, I have workings in the spirit, which doth weary me even that all my joints are weak, for those who are at Jerusalem; for had not the Lord been merciful, to show unto me concerning them, even as he had prophets of old, I should have perished also. 21 And he surely did show unto the prophets of old all things concerning them; and also he did show unto many concerning us; wherefore, it must needs be that we know concerning them for they are written upon the plates of brass. 22 Now it came to pass that I, Nephi, did teach my brethren these things; and it came to pass that I did read many things to them, which were engraven upon the plates of brass, that they might know concerning the doings of the Lord in other lands, among people of old. 23 And I did read many things unto them which were written in the books of Moses; but that I might more fully persuade them to believe in the Lord their Redeemer I did read unto them that which was written by the prophet bIsaiah; for I did cliken all scriptures unto us, that it might be for our profit and learning. 24 Wherefore I spake unto them, saying: Hear ye the words of the prophet, ye who are a remnant of the house of Israel, a branch who have been broken off; hear ye the words of the prophet, which were written unto all the house of Israel, and liken them unto yourselves, that ye may have hope as well as your brethren from whom ye have been broken off; for after this manner has the prophet written.

I think that it should be ok for this kind of religious practice to be argued in the halls of justice. BUT, I do think that any participant should be at least 18 and that the government should be able to intervene if any abuse is happening. They should have to follow and be subject to the law in this regard just like everybody else. In this Texas case, I feel for the innocent, but don't wish to see culture of child molestation enabled or overlooked.

I dropped my wallet in an Old Navy the other day. It was packed with back to school shoppers and I didn't notice it fall because my arms were full of clothing and needy kidlets. A woman watched the whole thing happen and followed me around the store to give me my wallet back. She saved me a world of hurt!

I think that you hit the nail on the head, Hijolly. I think that some are given these gifts.....and in my experience, there was a need or circumstance that preceded the manifestation. I have not been blessed with such a thing. But then again, I don't know if I have ever been in a position where such a gift was necessary. I don't know much about the early church and the practices in RS. I suppose I would like to know a little more about that.

What keeps you from doing missionary work?
Misshalfway replied to avatar4321's topic in Missionary Work
Hey Willow. Haven't seen you around for a while. Kinda missed your voice. Glad to see this post today! -
From what I have been told, yes. I am not sure if that is "intelligent speculation" or official revealed doctrine.

You got it Mailis. I hope she can stop smoking and have desires to continue progressing as well.

Sounds like this mom is in denial and taking the easier way out. What does the Primary President say? It would be nice if there was a diagnosis.....then there might be some solutions for managing his behavior. But if you have an unsupportive mother....perhaps your H should call the father on the phone and talk directly about the issues and ask for some suggestions for how to manage him in class. I mean, isn't the behavior of our children at church our responsibility as parents???? No child should be getting hit at church, even if it is from a boy with problems.

How Involved Should Parents Be?
Misshalfway replied to StrawberryFields's topic in Youth and Seminary
Staying involved is so key. I think I hate the extremes.....the detached or the controlling ends. I mean who wants to raise themselves.....and who wants to be controlled??? And how does a child learn to choose if their choices are made for them? I think it is a delicate balance to know when it is time to make a choice or let them have a go. I think as children get older, it is even more difficult to know how involved a parent should be. Perhaps such things should be negotiated over time. Perhaps staying flexible is important. I know there have been times when having parents involved in my adult business was problematic and also times when, for a season, more close involvement was needed. I don't know how one comes to that kind of wisdom to know when to engage and when to back off. Thank goodness for the Spirit. A Dixie Chics song comes to mind "Wide Open Spaces" Who doesn't know what I'm talking about Who's never left home, who's never struck out To find a dream and a life of their own A place in the clouds, a foundation of stone Many precede and many will follow A young girl's dream no longer hollow It takes the shape of a place out west But what it holds for her, she hasn't yet guessed [Chorus:] She needs wide open spaces Room to make her big mistakes She needs new faces She knows the high stakes She traveled this road as a child Wide eyed and grinning, she never tired But now she won't be coming back with the rest If these are life's lessons, she'll take this test As her folks drive away, her dad yells, "Check the oil!" Mom stares out the window and says, "I'm leaving my girl" She said, "It didn't seem like that long ago" When she stood there and let her own folks know She needed wide open spaces........ -
I remember speaking to some on my mission who felt that speaking in tongues was the only measure of feeling the Spirit or not. In all of my study on this particular subject inside of biblical scripture, I don't see the manifestation described in the way these rituals were described to me. Some of these rituals had people dancing about and some involved snakes. I don't quite know what to make of all of it. It is nothing that I have experienced with the Spirit and has caused me pause. I so agree with you, Wanderer. It seems that the scriptural term of "speaking in tongues" has various understandings and applications.
