But adding broccoli doesn't magically cancel out the fat or sugar, it just adds some of the vitamins and minerals that you would get from broccoli. I'd rather just not ruin my brownies and take vitamin supplement

Why ruin brownies?

The Holy Spirit and Orthodox Christianity

I am a non-member, probably not the kind that you want to hear from, but I'm bored at the moment so I'll throw in my opinion anyway. In my opinion, whether you are told you will feel the spirit and then feel something or you are told you just need to accept something and then see tiny miracles and signs once you accept it, either way it could be simply confirmation bias (you expect something to happen so you are actively looking for things that could be interpreted as what you are looking for), or truly divine signs that you have chosen the right path. Either way it is still faith at the core and at some point you simply have to either believe on faith or not believe. I chose not to believe for many personal reasons, but I also do not believe that anyone else is wrong for believing in something. My best guess when it comes to religion is "I don't know" and I'll freely admit that. From this limited human perspective, experiences, thoughts, feelings, and the chemical cocktail of hormones in our brains come together to uniquely distort our perspectives making it difficult if not impossible to know anything as absolute truth. -
I am a ridiculously picky eater as well but I lean more towards high fat dairy foods like pizza rather than red meat. Because of my picky eating habits though, I do most of the cooking myself and have gotten pretty good at it. If he doesn't like home made sandwiches but likes store bought ones, find out what the differences are. For me, I love sandwiches but can't stand them if they are not on the proper bread. A nice sandwich roll makes a world of difference in taste over just plain flat sliced bread. Also, if it's a matter of getting soggy over time, perhaps he can just take all the ingredients to work and assemble the sandwich there? It does sound like your DH needs to compromise on dinner a bit though. There are some things that are healthy and still taste good even for the pickiest of eaters, you just have to do a little experimenting and he has to at least be open to trying some new dishes.

Actually it appears the article is specifically saying that what most people refer to as the "missing link" was NOT found. Still very interesting article though :)

My comment was mostly tongue in cheek, but I've actually thought about personally getting some food storage before. Then I realized that I'm currently renting and if I ran out of money, I would be evicted before I ran out of food at this rate so food storage would only really help my situation in case of the the complete collapse of society which I think is far less likely than me losing my job. Edit: Also, even if I "owned" a home, unless the mortgage was completely paid off, the situation would be the same. Sure I could have savings to make the next few payments, but then why not also simply save the money I would have spent on food storage for when it is needed?

They just won't have anywhere to put the food once they are evicted from their house.

I think the majority of people (probably not vast majority though) end up being whatever religion their parents are. Obviously people have their own free will and can choose whatever religion they want after they are no longer under the care of their parents, but the influence of parents is often strong (even if the children don't admit it) and I also know many families that would flat out disown their children for such a thing. While technically we have the freedom of religion in the US and many people exercise that freedom, realistically many other people in this country don't have the freedom to choose a religion other than their parents religion without great consequences. I was lucky, my parents encouraged me to think for myself especially with regards to religion. I guess many religious people feel lucky that their parents forcefully imprinted the gospel on to them and wouldn't see me as lucky at all though.

Never discuss <blank> with members of the opposite party

I don't think there is anything wrong with believing your opinions are true, but to me, believing your opinions are so true that you should actively try to convert people to your way of thinking seems wrong. I know I'm probably more guilty of it that most so this is certainly not a condemnation of anyone. I think that ideally the truth is something that needs to be continually sought and re-evaluated with new information rather than firmly holding a position with the intent to imprint it on others because you are so sure it is right. It seems so many people (myself included) get into discussions without any intention of critically analyzing the other side's points but still expect the other person to accept the points you make. To me that is the root of why some topics are usually a bad idea to bring up. I'm probably just rambling again though, so feel free to ignore this if it didn't make sense :) -
Never discuss <blank> with members of the opposite party
DigitalShadow replied to talisyn's topic in General Discussion
That attitude is exactly what makes it difficult to discuss some issues without arguing. Not that there's anything wrong with it per se, but when you get two people with opposite views both believing they are simply proclaiming the truth, the discussion is bound to get heated and at the end both sides will be even more entrenched in their belief that they are patently right and others are patently wrong and nothing is accomplished. Edit: I know you qualified the statement before with "if we pro-lifers are right" so I'm not saying you necessarily have this viewpoint. -
My opinion, it is your imagination. But then again you probably could have guessed my opinion on it :)

Isn't there something in the Word of Wisdom about agreeing with democrats? -

Now I'm sure the end is near :) -
Wow, I'm a socialist and didn't even know it!

It was unclear to me, I originally had the same thought, but when he said "so he sent me" at the end it implies that God had some communication with him, otherwise it would have been something like "so I acted in his place." I don't know, either way it's a stupid joke and I find the actions of the "professor" far less plausible than those of the marine (which aren't much more plausible), and I seriously doubt applause would ensue after the incident as well.
-
I don't like to argue, and I apologize. I've just been annoyed about other things today and read too much in to what you were saying. I see what you were talking about now and I was wrong. I am still disappointed at how many people here (not you) do think he was justified and apologize for mistakenly putting you in to that category even though you explicitly said you weren't justifying it.
-
And if the marine perceived God telling him to kill the professor do you think he would have acted the same? Would he have been justified in your opinion? Despite what you may think, I completely understand soldiers acting on commands from superiors without a second thought, but acting from a voice in their head that they think is God is what scares me and is highly questionable in my opinion.
-
That was a duel though where they both agree that one of them is going to die. If Burr just walked up and shot the guy there would have been major consequences.
-
So, assaulting a professor you disagree with is "standing up and doing the right?" Interesting morality you have.
-
First off, what makes you say it wasn't a joke? And second, I never said it was an exact parallel, just that it was ironic that you find injury being inflicted in jokes perfectly fine as long as it is someone you disagree with. Also, nowhere in the joke about the professor did it say he was "socialist" and even if he were how does that make it alright and even funny to assault him?
-
If it were in the context of a bunch of other jokes with a good set up that might be funny, but as it is that just makes you sound like a jerk. I do find it quite ironic though that you laughed at the joke with the atheist getting punched in the face by the marine (and hoped it was true even), but seem to find this one in bad taste.
-
That's pretty much the reaction if I state my opinion at work. That's why I usually just keep quite when people discuss politics :)
-
Haven't heard about that one, but if it was a joke that he told himself, I think there is a big difference between having to apologize for telling a joke and having to apologize for laughing at a joke. In any case, people in this country are offended and outraged way too easily about stupid stuff.
-
If a comedian jokingly suggested Carrot Top should be tortured and killed for crimes against comedy, I would laugh, but not for a second think it was a serious suggestion. I think people are blowing this way out of proportion.

As far as I'm concerned, they're all entertainers that make outrageous claims to get people to watch/listen. I have no issue with that, that's just what entertainers do. The disturbing part is how many people take what they say as gospel.
