  1. . . . I'm still working on the web site, and it's almost done. I keep reading it to make sure it looks good, and I keep thinking of stuff to add. Then I got to find a host. I'll post here when it's finished with a URL.
  2. . . . Doing this game helps me keep up with the gospel. When I script test, I actually play, and I've gotten questions wrong and even confused me on a few. I'm not sure it's a good thing if I can confuse myself with questions. . . . I want to remind everyone there are many ways to get onto an IRC network. I choose to use DALnet, because the script is written for that network, and the network created the features that other IRC networks use, especially registering nicknames. To get onto an IRC network, search for "IRC clients" on Google or your app store. If you need assistance, please ask here. I hope that other people with similar or the same problem can be helped at the same time. I've made some changes since the last game. Some were already implemented, and some were added this week. One, there is a jackpot that accumulates when questions are missed. I updated it to include missed opportunities to earn points. The jackpot is awarded randomly to players that answer questions correctly. The odds get better the longer the jackpot isn't claimed, and higher point value questions get more chances. I'm still thinking of other ways to add to the jackpot. Two, I now added a pause feature after a question is asked. Even when I was playing, I felt there just wasn't enough time to think of an answer for questions, especially when more than one correct is needed. It's even worse with really long questions. I added a formula to add a pause in three second increments based on the question's length in number of words. *Really* short questions will have no pause. Three, I added some stat tracking. Of course, the main point of the game is to answer trivia questions, and everything else, especially the puzzles, are bonus points. The script is now going to track the number of correct answers each player gets. It's also going to track the average point value of questions. This average takes into account two and three answer questions. Finally, it tracks the questions asked and the number of right answers. I decided not to track the amount of time, because I have to manually look for correct answers, and it could get messy, let alone inaccurate. Educated guess questions is a little different where the player gets right answer credit only if a right answer is given. However, it will count for winning streak purposes. I could probably go into more, but this post is long enough. Besides, I still need to get a web site up. I think this will be the ticket to getting more people to the games. Doing a 24 hour trivia game is not possible right now, and it defeats the purpose of having a human.
  3. . . . on DALnet in channel #lds_trivia. See you there.
  4. Okay, I forgot that tomorrow is Father's Day, so there won't be a game Sunday evening. However, there may be one on Monday night. I don't know if I'll be home in time for Monday night. I'll post something if there will be a game, but there may not be much warning. After Monday, my next day off is Thursday, so I hope to have a game then.
  5. . . . It will take place on DALnet in channel #lds_trivia. . . . If anyone is interested, let me know or just like this post. (Please only like if there's an intent to actually come play.)
  6. . . . Once again, the game takes place on DALnet in channel #lds_trivia. I hope to see you there. Remember, 1,000 points is awarded to anyone there on time. If I'm late, 1,000 points will be awarded to whoever's there when I arrive.
  7. I haven't had an LDS Trivia and Puzzles game for a while because of school. I have one final exam to take tonight, and I will be done with school until the end of September. I know not what my future in regards to jobs is, but I do know that I will continue to work on LDS Trivia. . . . The game will still take place on IRC through DALnet in channel #lds_trivia. I'm pondering some things. One, I'm not sure if I should add another category or two. Right now, I have Bible, Book of Mormon, Church History, New Testament, Old Testament, and Wild. Should I create more categories? Two, I'm going to add time to actually read the questions. I want to give players some time to think about the answer, but I don't want them to just start searching for the answer right away. I need to create a formula that adds time based on the question's length. One important aspect of the game is reading the question, and if players feel they don't have enough time, they may not read the question, and that would effect their answers. Another thing I want to do over the summer is add a website about the game. The site gives information about the game with instructions on how to get to it. I'll post more when it's actually done. Anyway, I hope to see you all there.
  8. . . . Remember that the game is on IRC on DALnet in channel #lds_trivia. Any questions? Please ask here. I hope to see you there.
  9. . . . As always, the game takes place over IRC on DALnet in channel #lds_trivia. Please ask questions here if there are any. . . .
  10. . . . I've done lots of testing on the script, and I think I got most of the bugs out. There's a jackpot that increases with each question not correctly answered. Answer questions correctly for a chance to win it. There's a bonus for getting three or more in a row correct. Possible bonus for breaking a winning streak. Letter guesses for the first person to correctly answer the question. Points for guessing letters and solving those puzzles. Possible bonuses for correct spelling. Bonus for showing up to the game on time. Database of questions now programmed to randomize questions. Bonus points given for all correct answers given on questions requiring two or three answers. Exact match on answers NOT required. Correct spelling NOT required. Bonus round for the high scorer when game ends. That's all the features I want to highlight here. I hope to see you then.
  11. . . . As always, the game is on IRC on DALnet in channel #lds_trivia. If there any questions on how to get there, please ask. There are IRC apps for Android and iPhones. (See this post for more info.)
  12. I, unfortunately, got sick today . . . Once again, LDS Trivia and Puzzles takes place over IRC on DALnet in channel #lds_trivia. Hope to see you there.
  13. . . . It's on DALnet in channel #lds_trivia. There's a reason why the game takes place at this time, give or take. Most trivia games on IRC are completely scripted and run 24 hours. The problem with them is that a correct requires an exact match. Some scripts accept other answers, but for the most part, an exact match is needed. I don't like that. I do like the correct spelling aspect. What's different from this game is that an actual human being is hosting the game. It's for lots of fun, and I get to study the gospel. I've learned a lot of things. Remembering them is a different story. In script testing, I get questions wrong, or I don't remember the answers. Yeah, I actually try to play. It helps with testing. The other reason is that I go to school, and that's the only time I have for this game. I want to get people after dinner--at least, on the west coast. I hope to get people on the east coast, but it may be considered rather late. Other countries? I don't know. The last game had a player in New Zealand. He just had to figure out when the game takes place in this time zone. I hope to get people to attend. The more the better. Please ask questions if you're confused on how to get there. I hope it will help other people that may have similar problems. The ideal way is to use an IRC client and connect directly to bifrost.dal.net . Have fun.
  14. . . . Remember that it takes place on DALnet on channel #lds_trivia. Anyone who shows up on time will get a 1,000 point bonus.
  15. Well, I may not have had a game tonight, but I was able to do some more script testing. I probably haven't removed all the bugs, but I hope I got most of them--at least, to the point where it doesn't completely mess up the game. . . . Remember that it's on DALnet on channel #lds_trivia. . . .
  16. . . . It will take place on DALnet in channel #lds_trivia. Remember that 1,000 points will be issued to whomever shows up by then. . . . Please ask if you have any questions about how to get to the game. I cannot help people get to the game if I don't know what troubles people are having. . . .
  17. . . . It's a great Family Home Evening activity. Remember that the game is on IRC on DALnet in channel #lds_trivia. . . . . . .
  18. . . . Remember that the game is played on IRC on DALnet in channel #lds_trivia. I hope to see some people there.
  19. I'm going to try something different. I'm going to try for a game tonight at 5 to 7 PM Pacific, 8 to 10 PM Eastern if two or more people show up. The game takes place on DALnet in channel #lds_trivia. This time, I'm going to go over a part of how the game is played. The main part of the game is, of course, answering trivia questions. Solving puzzles is a chance for players to earn extra points, and I think it makes it more fun. One aspect of the game is that players will choose the category and level of the questions. Why? Gives them . . . control, I guess. I'm not sure why, but that's the way it's been done, even when I had the game back in the 1990's. The game has six categories: Bible, Book of Mormon, Church History, New Testament, Old Testament, Wild, and random (?). The Bible category has New Testament and Old Testament questions. Some questions may not fit to either testaments but both. Wild questions are questions that deal with the church but do not fit the other categories. The random category is a pick from the other categories. Random is not counted as a category. The questions have eight levels. Well, nine if you count random. The levels are a type of question asked, not its point value. Levels one through four require one correct answer; levels five and six require two; and levels seven and eight require three. Some questions are multiple choice (one, two, five, and seven), while others are not (three, four, six, and eight). Now, I'm going to ask a level eight question as an example: "Book of Mormon: Which three of five books has one chapter?" This one is probably an easy one, but I won't post the answer here. Whoever comes to play the game will not only get the answer but can actually submit an answer before the game starts. Whoever is right gets the question's point value. I'm also not going to mark it as used. I hope to see you there. Since school starts Thursday, I will only be able to offer games on Sundays.
  20. (I thought I would try here, because the game is about the gospel.) Since I'm off tomorrow, which is Tuesday, I'll host a LDS Trivia and Puzzles game tomorrow if two people show up after 5 PM Pacific. It takes place through IRC on DALnet. Any questions, please see the original post.
  21. My name is Chelsea Curran and I'm a newly published author! My first book "Unseen Road to Love" comes out April 11th, and I wanted to have the chance to connect with all my fellow LDS romance readers about the books we love so much, and why they make our hearts sing. I'm a young single adult and spent the last six years trying to figure out the ins and outs of love. At 18, my parents decided to divorce. It wasn't messy, but it struck a raw nerve that forced me to see that growing up, the evidence of their love wasn't consistently present, especially later in their marriage. It was when my mother had agreed with the quote, "Love is what's leftover after the passion and the romance dies" that I wondered if love was even worth pursing. My parents were grieving over so much emotional heartache that it left me with very little hope for myself. At the time I wasn't much of a reader besides enjoying the "Harry Potter series" or "Twilight", and my friends took it upon themselves to introduce me to the wonderful world of LDS literature. Over the past six years, I've read roughly 450 romance novels. Most LDS, others Christian themed or morally based. During this time of intense romantic study, I gained the perspective of literally dozens of authors and their take on what love is truly about. It's one thing to watch a movie where actors portray a feeling on behalf of the writer, but it's another to dive deeply into the thoughts of someone who truly believe love does exist and can be found. Over time, I started gaining my own dating experience and began to apply what was real and what was fantasy based on what I read. What's amazing is that I was able to relate to LDS romances, not just for the obvious reasons, but because each story contains a certain amount of realism in love. If anybody knows of Anita Stansfield, then they know her content contains a lot of trials that people overcome not just in love, but in life. They are stories that people can relate to, such as dealing with divorce, infidelity, death, illness, etc., specifically in the church. These topics are disheartening, but real and allow people to feel a certain empathy in a situation where they lack emotional support. What's even better is that she applies gospel teachings in a realistic example to show how people can heal from it. Of course there others that are just plain fun and put a comedic twist on issues that are my entire life. Living in the single's ward, my lifestyle is every bit as cheesy, dramatic, complicated and awesome as the books are. Finally, I was able to relate to something in bigger ways than "Twilight". Not to bag on "Twilight" but I think you know what I'm talking about. Overtime, as I obtained my own philosophies and writing skills from education and observation, I decided to write my own novel. Gradually I gained more experience in life, refining my ways in how to deal a good story, but more importantly, I learned how to tell a real story directed to the hearts of people who feel the things as I do. I didn't have a big voice growing up, but this was my chance to say something that I learned from all my fellow authors out there. LOVE IS REAL AND ITS FANTASTIC...IF YOU WORK FOR IT. As a teen, I had little hope for it as I blossomed into adulthood, but I had authors willing to share their voice, who gave me what I needed to move forward with confidence and understanding in finding someone to experience it with. I wanted the chance to do the same for others, and so I wrote a story inspired by real events and people who have changed my life for the better. Cedar Fort Publishing felt I did just that! If you want to know more, check out my website chelseacurranauthor.com or search my LDS romance novel "Unseen Road to Love" on Amazon, available for preorder. My friend and I also have a web show on YouTube called "Words on the Rocks" where we talk about dating in the singles ward and even reenact the awkward dating stories people send us. So tell me...what is your favorite LDS romance novel, and why?
  22. My two youngest kids loved Halloween and they always wanted me to try to scare them somehow on Halloween night. Several years ago, when they were still pretty young, we lived in a really rural area, about two hours from any sizable city. The October nights were always dark, creepy, with foggy fields, full moons, bats, and cobwebs. There was a small town a few miles away where my wife and I would take them Trick-or-Treating. On the way home, we used to head to one house out on a remote country road that was always decorated to the hilt, to finish off the night. As we left the last house, we pulled back into our street, which was a rutted dirt road surrounded by fields and woods. There were no street lights and I had intentionally left the porch light off. As we approached the house, I started telling my son, age 6 and his sister, age 12, that there had been reports of a strange creature that had been spotted in the area. My daughter, suspecting that this was my attempt to scare them, just said, "Da-ad!" in that dismissive tone that only Jimmy Fallon can imitate. As we pulled into the driveway, I was describing the mysterious creature and it's claws. My daughter was rolling her eyes and the little brother was joking about it, too. I turned the car's lights off and it was almost pitch black around the car as I stopped in the driveway. As they got ready to open the door, I said, "Wait! There's something coming up behind the car!" "Da-ad!" was the reply. What the kids didn't know was that the rubber on the rear window's windshield wiper had fallen off the day before. I had discovered this by accident when I turned it on during a brief rain shower and it made a loud, scratching noise against the glass that made me nearly jump out of my skin in broad daylight. In the inky blackness that surrounded us, I sneaked my hand up to the button and turned on the rear windshield wiper. "SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECH!" the thing went. The children's screams were authentic as were the tears afterward. Old dad had pulled a good one on them. I don't think I ever laughed so hard in my life. Does your family have any good Halloween traditions or have you pranked them in a memorable way to celebrate the season?
  23. So I went to a multi stake meeting last night with ward councils where the mission president, his wife and two members of the 70 came and spoke to us. You know when you are up in front of a crowd sitting or speaking, although you may not make eye contact with people, you have a general direction you look but not focus on? Well I found myself sitting in the direction that the mission presidents wife (while she wasn't speaking) was looking as her "go to" spot staring into the crowd. I know she wasn't looking at me, but the entire time I had this nagging feeling that she was! Haha! I was trapped in the stare zone! Has anyone else run into this? Once you notice it, your mind doesn't let go. Just stop looking at me! hehe.
