MorningStar Posted June 23, 2008 Report Posted June 23, 2008 When there is a death in the family and you can't afford to travel, do you put it on the credit card and go anyway? Do you think that's justified?
pam Posted June 23, 2008 Report Posted June 23, 2008 This same thing has come up with me for a couple of family members. I didn't have the cash to go to their funeral in another state. Rather than go into debt...I spoke to their children who understood my situation. For me...now this is just my personal feeling...unless it were a parent or a sibling I wouldn't go into debt to attend. Most families are understanding of these things.
miztrniceguy Posted June 23, 2008 Report Posted June 23, 2008 i was unemployed when my mother died. i had just made 2 trips to see her. the bishop gave me gas money so i could make another trip for her funeral.
Truegrits Posted June 23, 2008 Report Posted June 23, 2008 I agree with pam. If it were a close family member, or a close friend I would go. When my mother died, I let the family members that lived out of state know that I did not expect them to travel here for the funeral, nor were they to feel bad that they could not make it. I think it more important to try to see/spend time with our loved ones while they are still with us.
MorningStar Posted June 23, 2008 Author Report Posted June 23, 2008 We really want to go and comfort my husband's brother, so we're praying about it. If we do go, we have to leave for Utah tomorrow morning. We're guessing that the gas will be at least $500. I'm waiting for my husband to come home and let me know if his work will even let him off for it.
MorningStar Posted June 24, 2008 Author Report Posted June 24, 2008 Ugh. My husband didn't know his tabs were expired and he got a $200 ticket today. I'll take that as a sign that we shouldn't go. We'll just have to have our own little service at home while the rest of the family is having one in Utah.
Jenamarie Posted June 24, 2008 Report Posted June 24, 2008 Awww, that really bites. Could you afford to send some flowers maybe? Or a Visa giftcard that they can use to help pay for some of their expenses?
MorningStar Posted June 24, 2008 Author Report Posted June 24, 2008 Yeah, we'll do something like that.
Moksha Posted June 24, 2008 Report Posted June 24, 2008 Morningstar, you have my condolences at the death in your family.
