phantom_heart Posted June 26, 2008 Report Share Posted June 26, 2008 I just got a new job. I am a non active member of the church at this moment but would like to be. BUT I have been in this town for over a month and tried and tried had interviews and more interiviews and couldnt get a job. ... Finaly i got one. Its at a wine store. How bad is it really? I'm not drinking it OR buying it. I expressed to them that I dont like wine. My boss said she didnt eather she just reads the discription of the taste and tells that to customers lol. It seems really interesting but by selling it i guess i'm helping. Though if it wasnt me selling it it would be someone else. How does this affect me. NateHowe Posted June 27, 2008 Report Share Posted June 27, 2008 Honestly, if the job makes you uncomfortable, you may want to keep submitting applications to other companies while you are working at the liquor store temporarily. Although you are not drinking or forcing others to drink, your sole job is to provide others the opportunity to do so. Depending on your personal set of values (we are talking about purely personal feelings here), you may or may not feel that you should keep this job. If it becomes something that stands between you and the Lord, you should leave. On the other hand, while you do this job for the moment, it may help you to pay tithing and demonstrate faith in that way.In a broader sense, it sounds to me like you could improve your career prospects with some type of education or training. Consider attending a Stake Employment Night in your area - many stakes have them weekly. That being said.if you have any further concerns then maybe you should consult your Bishop or Stake President. They asked me to taste the wine though. It was my frist day so i asked if i could spit it out. They said yes!! Thank the lord. They just wanted me to be able to describe the flavor (dry) I expressed that I would prefer to read up on the wines and what the quality control people say is the falvour lol. They seem to be just fine with that. So i feel much MUCH better now. And I didnt know that the church had employment nights thats just WONDERFUL. i think i'll check it out. Really? I was thinking about getting a part-time job as a bar maid but my husband was dead against it. He said 'obviously thats a no-no'. I said why, its in the evenings, u can get tips and its not like id be drinking. Dont see it as any different to working in a film-rental place or a shop-I worked in a newsagents and sold cigarettes so whats the difference? And I am happy that you feel that sense of relief as you move forward. I hope this isn't where you land though. I hope it is only a stepping stone that will lead you to desire something better. From the little that you have posted, I feel sincere righteous desire in you. Working at this place will not be good for you in the long run. If you were one of my close relatives or friends, I would invite you to move to a better place where some measure of the Spirit could be felt. I would tell you that you are better than that and deserve better than that too. That you don't need to be taste testing alcohol to make a secure living. And that God can bring you to something better IF you place yourself in the ways of obedience. Just my two cents...... Congrats on the job. But don't stay there. God can do better for you. In my old ward in the Paradise Stake (Las Vegas) there was a fellow there who went to culinary school. One class that was required was wine tasting. Everyone told him to just taste it and then spit it out. But he felt that was too fine a line. He had read that people can judge the taste of things by their sense of smell, so he prayed about it, and now he judges everything via his sense of smell and he's spot on every time. AND it seems that no one can get full time really here its part time. So i'm going to keep it and work until i find something better. I just dont have many skills. I once had to take a job on Sunday and miss church, because it was the only one I could find. I hated it. As soon as I could, I found another job that didnt require working on Sunday. The longer you are at a job, the less you will look for another one. You are obviously worried about it for a reason. You should go with your feelings and get another job as soon as possible before you become complacent about it. Have faith, move forward. You will find additional blessings by doing things like reading scriptures, praying, fasting, going to church, or living any basic gospel principle. The scriptures say that when we keep the Lord's commandments, he is required to bless us (I'm not just talking 10 commandments). Anyways yes i am looking for another job. It makes me feel a tiny bit better knowing that half the wine i sell has a very low AC. Its not 4o% or anything. I still dont feel good about it so i am activly looking. OH btw my husband got an interview i'm praying really hard he gets this job if he does it could mean big things for us.
