That maybe the guideline in the church handbook but I don't think its law.

no one said it was a law and I don' thin k there is a line about it in the handbook.....the Bishop should know whether the person is ready for this....I was responding that this is the earliest it could happen....at baptism if the person is worthy to be baptised...why not recieve the Aaronic Priesthood at that time.....3 months later if they still attend and pay a full tithing....and still worthy why not recommend him to be ordained an Elder...

I received the Melchezidek priesthood about 6 months after I was baptized. I agree that it should not be taken lightly. I know for me it is not. I try to do my best to be worthy to administer to those in need. Why this person has been overlooked should be looked into. I know in our area they try to get the male / female ...couple to the temple a year after they have joined. Taking longer than that usually means there are issues or the person / couple are not quite ready. There was a family who had been members way before I joined, and then just went to the temple a while back. It varies from person to person.

Pale, obviously we have gotten off topic, should a convert be allowed the priesthood, yes, in a timely manner if they show a willingness to hold up their end of the agreement. But should it be given just because some time went by... in my opinion NO, not just because they've been there for a few months or so. They should earn it and respect the calling, and that applies to all of us, not just converts.... By the by, we should all be converts to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

For me, it was about 5-6 months after i joined the church that i recieved the Holy Melchizedek Priesthood. I made sure to keep the commandments, keep myself worthy, and exercise my Aaronic Priesthood powers by blessing the sacrament on Sundays.

But, remember the Old Testament. Enoch was ordained before his father and grandfather (or was that Seth?). Ordination to the Priesthood is dependent on the duties God has prepared for you, your worthiness on earth, and also to a degree upon your role in the pre-existence. There is nothing you can do to effect God's timing except to live out his will to the best of your abilities, including paying a full tithe, going to the temple and performing the ordinances you can, and exercising your power as an Aaronic Priest.

For males, receiving the Melchizedek priesthood and being ordained to the office of elder (at least) is a saving ordinance. It's not just a position in the Church. Every effort should be made to prepare accountable male converts to receive the Melchizedek priesthood as soon as possible so that they can prepare to enter the House of the Lord and receive the remaining ordinances of salvation.

It is a serious oath and covenant and as with baptism and other ordinances, one must meet basic worthiness requirements in order to receive the priesthood. Not keeping the associated covenants brings damnation, and not receving the priesthood and it's associated oath and covenants brings damnation. So, it's a "damned if you do" and "damned if you don't" situation for those who have been taught the truth. :P

I'm a new convert.. haven't been ordained yet. It's been 4 months. The bishop told me to expect 4-5 months. 6 at the most.

I figure it will happen when i'm ready. Although I do get annoyed being asked to pass the sacrament so often..

I love passing the sacrament, and blessing it, too. Unfortunately, I very seldom get asked to help out on those occasions when we're short of Aaronic Priesthood holders, probably because the deacon's quorum president tends to go for the younger men who don't have a bunch of kids they're taking care of.

Haha probably -- I might get better about it one day.. I have trouble focusing on the 'taking' it part. The entire process of passing it distracts me and.. I don't feel like I get anything out of it when I pass it. It helps me much more when I have a few minutes of nothing to think about why and what i'm doing.

Just curious.. if I went to the bishop and told him that I 'needed' the M. Priesthood.. how do you think he would respond? My gf is moving out on her own soon.. and she'll need that around.

He would probably respond by telling you what you needed to do in order to qualify to receive it. Seeking to qualify for and hold the authority of the priesthood is a worthy goal; see Abraham 1:1-4.

Appreciate the passage. I'll check that out.. it's not ringing any bells so I best read it.
