RachelleDrew Posted July 30, 2008 Report Posted July 30, 2008 My wife was up and cleaning her hospital room after her c-section. I'm guess that isn't normal.Good gravy. What painkillers did she have during the surgery? My lower half was still numb for about 12 hours after my epidural.I wish I could have cleaned. My inlaws practically camped out in my room. They aren't the neatest people, my pulse was practically racing over how dirty the room was. Quote
MarginOfError Posted July 30, 2008 Report Posted July 30, 2008 Good gravy. What painkillers did she have during the surgery? My lower half was still numb for about 12 hours after my epidural.apparently I've misrepresented the situation. She was in bed the first two days, and walking about some by the end of the second day. The third day we snuck out of the hospital for a walk. The fourth day she was cleaning up the room. She got home and had no problem with stairs at all. She was moving about normally after a week and probably could have been cleared to drive even, but we didn't let her on principle. Quote
havejoy Posted July 30, 2008 Report Posted July 30, 2008 Going back to work after any kind of surgery depends on the type of job you have to go back to and your own physical response to surgery. My secretary had a lumpectomy and missed a week of work. I had the same thing and had to miss 3 weeks because my job is a lot more physically challenging than hers. We also had two of the men who had simple knee surgery. One was gone for 2 weeks and one was gone for 8 weeks. Neither had complications although one was a lot heavier than the other. Quote

I am putting this on my "questions for God that need immediate attention" list. # 487: Why did Moe's wife have such an easy time and I was begging for pain pills and barfing up jello?????? Quote

WANDERER Posted July 30, 2008 Report Posted July 30, 2008 (edited) Having thought about money lost during maternity leave it is perhaps: superannuation and employers superannuation co-contribution (not sure if it is affected or how but it may be) holiday bonus (a kind of once a year Xmas bonus, about one weeks pay, calculated on the number of hours worked) long service leave (calculated on the number of days worked) I think it would be fair enough if these amounts were affected in lieu of support and equity. Other possibilities available: taking leave at part pay and having double maternity leave working four years at reduced pay and having one year off. Can be extended to two years at part pay. total time you are allowed to take off - 4 years including paid and non-paid and they will hold your job open and you get the same place and position Up to 7 years family responsibility leave (unpaid...I think some updating in training required and no guarantee of the same school) Going to 0.5 working half a week or even one day a week permanent (if you can find someone that will agree to job share...usually can) If you need money you can do relief work There are also banking options if you are a member of the teacher's bank where you can suspend loan payments for short durations by increasing payments and getting ahead (usually used by those doing relief work who don't get the long summer vacation pay: 6 weeks). Job: primary teacher fulltime, government employee. Reasonably family friendly. After hours school care supplied at workplace. But still hard to find childcare for under four years of age...and meetings and interviews...and at own cost. Edited July 30, 2008 by WANDERER Quote
