Still_Small_Voice Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 XP nor Vista can hold a candle to my OS X...For those of you who don't know what a MAC OS X is:The MAC Operating System, which has its roots in the Unix Operating System, is currently only available on Macintosh computers by Apple Corporation. Software compatible with the MAC operating system is not readily available since it only works on Macintosh computers. The Mac and the Macintosh Operating System were first introduced in 1984. Several versions of the Macintosh Operating System have been written since 1984, the latest being Mac OS X (ten). It offers easy access to the Internet and allows any Macintosh computer to become a Web server for a small network. Because it is easy to use, the Mac OS has been popular in educational environments, from elementary school through the university level. It also provides excellent support for graphics and multimedia applications and is popular in the professional desktop publishing and graphics markets. Quote
miztrniceguy Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 i plan to stay with xp as long as possible. considering buying an extra copy to have on hand. i currently use an upgrade from win98, so i have to keep my win98 disc for whenever i do a fresh install, which is about once a year. i had to do a lot of searching for my wife's laptop to find a good one with xp. none of the stores have them anymore. ended up going thru dell small business unit. Still_Small_Voice Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 I plan to stay with XP as long as possible. considering buying an extra copy to have on hand.Windows XP is definitely on its way out. I have been pondering buying a copy of XP from NewEgg.com for $85. The only real limitations with XP that I see are the following:1) Direct-X 9 (graphic user interface for video games) will eventually be phased out as video game manufacturers start making video games for Direct-X 10 which is only available with Windows Vista.2) With Windows XP there is also about a 3584 megabyte limitation on Random Access Memory. If you have over 4096 megabytes of RAM the operating system cannot use it and doesn't recognize it. (This doesn't really matter currently anyway since 3072 megabytes is plenty of memory for a personal computer user with Windows XP.)3) Windows Vista does have better security features over Windows XP but this problem can be solved with third party security software written for XP. Still_Small_Voice Posted September 22, 2008 Report Posted September 22, 2008 Tomorrow my barebones kit arrives for me to start putting together my first computer from scratch.I just built my first computer a few months ago. I ordered all the parts separate and put it together myself. A word of advice for a first time builder. Electrostatic Discharge is simply the discharge of built up static electricity. Electrostatic discharge however, should not be taken lightly when working with computers. Electro Static Discharge can cause two types of damage in an electronic component: catastrophic failure and or upset failure. Catastrophic failure destroys a component beyond use. An upset failure damages the component so that is does not perform well even though it may function to some degree. At the very least, you should touch the bare, unpainted metal of your computer case frame before handling any computer components to prevent damage to any parts in your computer. Quote

Many times errors will appear because the operating system is attempting to use old device drivers to run different hardware. Out of curiousity, did you get a Dual-Core Processor with your new system? Quote
miztrniceguy Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 yes, i got a pentium d940 3.2ghz dual core 800 fsb 4mb cache. as far as os, i am ready for a new install if necessary. it's a fresh install already, but have nothing saved on that computer to worry about. Quote
kona0197 Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 Should have gotten an Apple... Quote
Rico Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 I use Ubuntu Linux. I didn't start using it because I thought it was the best OS in the world. I didn't start using using it because I thought it was more stable or less prone to junkware. I started using it for a more personal reason. See, I was living in Thailand and bought a new laptop. The laptop had Windows XP installed on it. It wasn't a legitimate copy of Windows. Instead it was a pirated copy that the shop had installed on it. The vast majority of computers sold in Asia are sold from the manufacturers without Windows installed. The local shops then install cracked versions. I had to make a choice in my life. I could continue to use the cracked Windows XP, I could go out and buy a legitimate copy or I could use an alternative. I felt that if I kept using the cracked version that I would be a thief. I didn't have the $300 to buy a legitimate Windows XP(well maybe I did, but my family has needs). My only option was to use Ubuntu Linux. When you make that kind of decision, you'd be surprised how well Ubuntu Linux satisfies your needs. You realize that you don't need Windows. Everything you need to do is right there in Ubuntu. I have been using Ubuntu Linux for more than 2 years. I have no desire to use Windows and whenever I do have to use Windows, I just feel dirty. Quote
kona0197 Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 Windows only costs around 80 bucks here for the upgrade version. That being said i really do not like Linux. I've tried it and found Windows and OS X a heck of a lot better. Quote

I don't understand why Macintosh doesn't do this. They would likely make loads of money. Quote

updatelee Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 Im a convert. I havent had windows installed as my main os since win95 hehe. allways had it in vmware or dual boot for those odd apps of course. then one day my wife complained and complained that things were to complicaed in linux, they are I agree. I as a birthday present I bought her a macbook. 3m later I had my own macbook, now linux and windows are in vmware and I only use them when I have to. osx is so much simpler and things just work. I think I fried my RAM, (or was it my motherboard). POP! Gone! Quote
miztrniceguy Posted September 25, 2008 Report Posted September 25, 2008 so far everything went fairly well, considering i decided not to use the case that came with the kit i ordered, because it was fugly.i decided instead of doing a complete build, to replace mobo, cpu, fan, and ram in the compag that i was going to scavenge everything else from. therefore the wires for the power switch, power led, and hdd led did not coincide with the pins on the motherboard. had to take them out of the block they were in and use the blocks from the new case i did not use. everything else went well, and currently downloading xp sp2 Quote
