Heavenguard Posted September 30, 2008 Report Posted September 30, 2008 I've been reading through Proverbs, and today I read Pr 17:18 - A man lacking in judgment strikes hands in pledge and puts up security for his neighbour.I'm the kind of person that lends money to my friends when they need it, whether a big amount or small amount. (Altho at my age, a big amount is something like $1000, so not into the 10s of thousands or more.)It just seems to me that to deny supporting your friend (neighbour) monetarily is ... not very neighbourly. Your thoughts? Quote
Hemidakota Posted September 30, 2008 Report Posted September 30, 2008 Proverbs 17:18 "A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend."This is what I read. I don't see the same correlation. What I do see is the key term "FRIENDSHIP". Other scriptures that speaks of frienship is the following:Topical Guide to the Scriptures: Friendship Old Testament Ruth 2:8-13, 1 Samuel 18:1-4, Job 19:14-21, 42:10, Proverbs 17:17-18, 18:24, 22:24-25, 27:6, 27:17, New Testament Luke 11:5-8, John 15:13-15, James 2:23, Book of Mormon 2 Nephi 1:30, Alma 15:16-18, 17:1-3, 27:16-19, Mormon 8:1-6, Ether 1:36-37, 2:1-5, 6:16-18, Doctrine and Covenants Doctrine and Covenants 84:77, 88:130-133, 93:45, 121:9, 134:11, Pearl of Great Price Joseph Smith-History 1:75, 1:28 Quote
Moksha Posted September 30, 2008 Report Posted September 30, 2008 I like this one that loosely goes:What you have done to the least, you have done to me.:) Quote
Traveler Posted September 30, 2008 Report Posted September 30, 2008 (edited) I've been reading through Proverbs, and today I read Pr 17:18 - I'm the kind of person that lends money to my friends when they need it, whether a big amount or small amount. (Altho at my age, a big amount is something like $1000, so not into the 10s of thousands or more.)It just seems to me that to deny supporting your friend (neighbour) monetarily is ... not very neighbourly. Your thoughts? When I lend money I require a contract and collateral. All the terms are written up by my lawyer and an escrow account is set up for payment. If payments are not made according to the contract the collateral is liquated and any remaining funds are returned according to the contract. When I loan money – especially to family and friends, I make sure I have nothing to do with collections or seeing that payments are on time. This way we can all remain friends. If any questions are asked of me personally – I respond that I have nothing to do with what happened or is about to happen. If it turns out that their collateral was short of the amount owed, I think nothing of it unless they ask for another loan.I would also add that this is how I was treated by my father whenever I saked for money. It goes without saying that I never asked for $5 for a date. The Traveler Edited September 30, 2008 by Traveler Quote
